Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom (2023)
It's better than expected
This is a good movie. The action is still really fun and well choreographed. That fun comic book flavor is still very much present. It's another adventure which I think is a genre that fits Aquaman well. The issue is the story is flat out bad. I don't know how this passed through a chain of command and everyone said yes. The script is even worse. Oh wow this a really bad script. There were moments I actually physically cringed at the dialogue. I don't know what Jason Momoa was doing in this film but it wasn't acting. Patrick Wilson was the biggest standout and I enjoyed him most on screen. He made Jason Momoas performance bearable. This is also coming from a Jason Momoa fan. This is without a doubt his worst performance. Amber Heard is barely in the film but oh wow she's really bad in this. I actually liked her in the first film but she's awful in this one. Overall a step down from Aquaman but I think that if you enjoyed the first one you'll enjoy this one. Just less so. A disappointing end to the DCEU no doubt.
Velma (2023)
How not to reboot a franchise
Apart from some really nice looking animation, this is a complete dumpster fire. Perhaps some of the worst writing I've seen in a major animation show in a while. I'm actually really shocked WB allowed these writers to butcher such an iconic IP of theirs. There is a fine line between having fun with the original while poking fun, and committing complete character assassination. I think the 21 jump street remake is a good example of how to do that. You need to respect what made the original what it was, but also laugh about the plot holes, goofiness, etc. Velma is simply just hateful. There is no love for scooby-doo in this show.
