Here Comes the Boom (2012)
Makes me feel good.
Why do we watch movies? To be entertained. This movie delivers that. It is silly, fun, and has lots of heart.
It also shows a secret of life that too many people miss. Happiness is found in doing for others.
Goals are important. Without them, we're just being tossed about. Days really all meander together because we're not heading any direction.
Watching this movie, I rooted for him to win. I rooted for the children. Movies are here to entertain to let
it entertain you. Maybe it's for people that are over 40. When we have had to ask ourselves the question of when did we settle for less? Thanks.
The Goonies (1985)
Still passes the test of time.
I wasn't quite 13 years old when the Goonies was released. I would hate to pick a favorite movie from my teen years because they made some great movies. But maybe this one.
The Goonies has always kept me smiling. Streaming has enabled me to pass this on to my kids. They enjoy it as much as I did.
I can't tell you the appeal. The treasure hunt? The brotherly love? The chance of a group of kids to be the heroes to their parents?
What 12 year old boy wouldn't want to go on an adventure through caves, complete with the head cheerleader, bandits in close pursuit. Only to find one of the most amazing pirate ships ever. At 50 I don't quite watch it with the same dreamy innocence of a 12 year old but I still immensely enjoy it.
The Truman Show (1998)
Insightful. We're all in our own Truman show.
1998 was half my life ago. I remember that I didn't think much of the Truman show at the time. I was young and I expected a comedy. I didn't know what it was like to be Truman Burbank. Thanks to social media and the manipulation that goes along with it, today I know what it's like to be Truman.
There's many things that I think we grow to understand as we age. Breaking out of the paradigm that has been erected in our lives is every bit as difficult for us as it is for Truman. This movie is an entirely different movie at 50 years old than it was at 25 years old.
In a world of make believe, there only needs to be one True Man.
Leap of Faith (1992)
You meant it for bad
You meant it for bad but God designed it for good. I first saw this movie at 20 years old. I didn't think much of it. Expecting more comedy from Steve Martin. Probably would have been better marketed as less of a comedy and more of a drama.
I watched this movie again. Near 50 instead of 20. Now a God fearing Christian man. I must say that I was moved. I don't know anything about the technical of movies. I just know my reaction to them.
What Jonas Nightingale meant for evil, God designed for good. You never know how much work God will go through to save one sinner. For if one sheep leaves the 99, which of you will not go look for it.
This movie moved me. Moved my wife. I thought it was beautiful. His redemption was real. His repentance genuine. You know that as he rides off into the night, that he's found God. Enjoy this story of salvation. There's nothing more glorious than the prodigal son returning to the father.
I Can Do Bad All by Myself (2009)
This was a wonderful movie.
My wife and I watched this tonight. Waterfalls of tears streaming down both of our faces. Movies that ain't no good can't produce emotions like this. This is a movie that's real.
There's no action. There's nothing but raw tension. Characters stretched across the coals. Facing life. Real life too.
People don't live in a fantasy land. The honesty of the characters was moving. There's some cheese but it went well with the tears. I didn't think much of what I started to watch. It has some comedy but it is much, much, more. Maybe that's what turned people off. Too much reality on a Saturday night.
Inside the Mind of a Cat (2022)
No rating
It was decent. I was enjoying it for until halfway through. Why does Netflix feel the need to introduce social commentary in everything they do? I'm done. I don't care about people's opinion of religion, or witches. I was interested in cats. Also, whenever I hear people talking about ancient history like they were there, I can't help but think that someone decided they knew what dinosaurs sounded like. This documentary would have been better if they just did away with the historical social justice perspective and just showed kitties. It keeps telling me my review is too short. I ran out of things to say.
The Gray Man (2022)
I tried to like it
It started out well but never made up for it's lack of a story. Mindless action that was impossible to believe. Just way too much. It would have been a better movie had it been a spoof. Also, Chris Evans really sucks as Freddy Mercury.
The Terminal List (2022)
Screen is too dark
I can't make it any details to tell if it's a good movie. Amazon won't fix the problem. Video is so dark it's annoying. Trying to watch on Android. It seems like it would be enjoyable. I'm not actually giving a rating because I think it would be unfair. This is very frustrating that we have no way to change the settings that prime video forces us to use.
Woodlawn (2015)
I think some people really miss the one thing
I've read a lot of reviews that pan the push of Christianity in this film. Methinks the people have missed the truth of this movie. This really happened. The conversion of the teams. The Christianity aspect of the film It was the truth.
I think it's a bit dishonest for a reviewer to pan the spiritual angle when it was their conversion i Christianity that was the basis for the whole event.
Blade Runner 2049 (2017)
It's only too long if it isn't any good
I enjoyed it. A slow pace to be certain but it was really nice to stay in their world. They did a great job of keeping the atmosphere of the original while not copying it.
Star Trek: Strange New Worlds (2022)
Nope. It's not Star Trek
I watched the first episode. I felt that the casting read terribly lopsided. I made it two minutes into the second episode. I don't understand why they can't just make a show without trying to make a point. It's tiresome.
Rescued by Ruby (2022)
Oh the cheese
Yeah, a bit cheesy. Maybe even overdone in spots. But I'm a 49 year old man, so there's that. I enjoyed watching this with my youngest daughter and my granddaughter. I've gotta say too that I cried a bit at the ending. And then to find out that my the event actually happened. Sometimes in life you know that there is more than coincidence. That something supernatural flows through our world. Anyway, let yourself enjoy the cheese. It's especially nice to watch something with the little ones that doesn't have to be uncomfortable for me or them. Oh, and never let yourself forget how smart animals and kids really are.
The Cokeville Miracle (2015)
Lean not on thine own understanding
There is just too much to believe that in a room that was 30x32 feet, packed with 156 people, with a bomb powerful enough to destroy the whole wing of the school, and not one person was killed in the blast. Don't ever discount the power of prayer.
"therefore, confess your sins to one another, and pray for one another so that you may be healed. The effective prayer of a righteous man can accomplish much"
"Elijah was a man with a nature like ours, and he prayed earnestly that it would not rain and it did not rain on the earth for three years and six months."
"Then he prayed again, and the sky poured rain and the Earth produced its fruits."
James 5:16-19.
The Wheel of Time (2021)
Why even call it the wheel of time
If you liked the books, don't watch this. It's really bad. The story, the characters, the settings, all bad. Political correct casting, even though the books describe people of all races. And I'm only 20 minutes into it.
Big (1988)
A throwback to my childhood
I really love this movie. Maybe because when I saw it at 15 I could relate. What kid doesn't want to be "Big." A lifetime later. At 49 years old. It still moves me, albeit differently. I feel for the family missing their son. I understand Josh wanting to return to his innocence. I understand things differently. "Big" still makes me tear up. Time comes fast enough without magic. Don't rush it and don't let it pass you by.
Horton Hears a Who! (2008)
Really fun and enjoyable
I saw this in the theater when it came out. With my future wife and her two daughters. I laughed so hard I embarrassed her. Tonight we are watching it with our daughter and granddaughter. I'm still laughing. Stop analyzing it and enjoy it. Chess mate!
