Shûmatsu no Valkyrie (2021)
terrible plot, pace is too slow
Gave up after finishing season 1 episode 8, was keeping my patience. The soundtrack is ok, the anime is acceptable- however the story line is just not really working for me. Very basic I'm quite surprise they could get another season to run.
Talking no jutsu is apparent, i could tolerate the first fight with Thor, but then the next was just excruciating for me; all the backstories and multi-layered fights (where the players would get stronger and emotionally available after beaten down- very thematic). I just decided that I could not invest anymore of times watching this as it lacks appealing story telling and newness.
Mythic Quest: Raven's Banquet: TBD (2021)
perfect closing & finale of season 2
Been somewhat down by last week episode, but this one is just on another level. The chemistry, the plot, the surprise- It's all well directed.
Mythic Quest: Raven's Banquet: Juice Box (2021)
I still want to believe with this show
Obviously it's understandable for them to expand season 2 as not only about Ian & Poppy, but probably that would feel good after we have 20-ish episode exploring them first?
I felt like there's so much they can explore to create and joke about Ian & Poppy but it's just not that much in season 2? I'm not connecting much with sideline stories of testers, Abed, and C. W at the moment in comparison to Ian & Poppy season 1.
This is probably what you get when make just 9-10 episode for 1 season and then suddenly season 2 you feel the need that 'wait wait what about others...'
Sweet Tooth (2021)
A GOOD WATCH!
Gus is definitely the foundation of this series; he shared the genuineness of a curious kid without pitching it too much to your face. Adding to that, a team of good actors & actresses; they even established well-thought villains (with a strong backstory).
Whether it's strong script, the fantasy, the mystery, the cinematography, the music even- all of them are perfectly placed. I'm praying that they don't ruin the season 2.
The Mosquito Coast: The Glass Sandwich (2021)
still don't know what's going on
He used to work on NSA, invented something fancy and that's it only- it granted somewhat multiple season of this series, that actually forgot any good series started with a strong 1st season foundation. It did provide good pilot episode however it was going from top notch to
Meh.
I don't know what's the deals they had with appleTV or the owners or those people, it felt like that they were making this knowing that they have all the time in the world stretching this as much as possible probably saying to all the crews 'don't worry, 5 seasons already planned'.
6/10 for this season. If season two is still like this, they deserve a 1/10. So ironic that a story trying to show how bad it is consumerism now elevating the actual consumerism even further with its run.
Mythic Quest: Raven's Banquet: Backstory! (2021)
Now that's what you call a backstory!
I guess it's very easy to 'choose' hating on C. W. but truthfully mythic quest was never about making us rooting for 'all around role model' characters, arguably and ironically the nice tester is someone you can fit to basic personality people root for but even that, she's 'not' that interesting to watch.
Now, in my opinion C. W is (or was) a writer ahead of its time in backstory episode. He was probably never meant to make linear story, just like he said, he pretty much described a game story and was torn down both by his peers and idol. I guess we expect world has a way of balancing thing and the fact that probably C. W was struggling to make a name for himself, parading his nebula award, up to the point when Ian found him and decided to have him (after 30-40 years?), that's probably why he has a justified backstory.
Servant (2019)
lost in the middle
Binge watching this; season 1 still ok, would give an 8/10 but season 2 damn... i say 4/10 hence overall 6 is justified.
I get that it was intended to build suspense, the eeriness, lightless setup and typical unknown guest with woaaaa some mysteries there would be discovered, very formulaic but it can still be enjoyable.
BUT, they missed a logic structure in this all. It is not a slow burn (if they think they're doing); it is a failed attempt of slow burn, you don't make a slow burn by escaping the plot with unnecessary twist that had nothing to do to even further the plot.
I feel like they did this on purpose so that they can still fight and appeal to their 'somewhat' loyal fans for the show to still being picked up for another season and source of income.
Minari (2020)
What a raw and powerful journey
Yup, my first review ever, and I dare to say it's a privilege to have watched Minari.
I have been avoiding reading reviews and watching the trailer of this movie as I wanted to be surprised by what the experience would look like and damn.. It was the best movie experience so far in 2021.
The story is well written, it is not trying to put all dramas in your face, a slow but strongly placed scene after scene, it's like watching real life in front of me. The soundtrack felt heavenly, the shot was beautifully put with the orange-ish tone, and the acting from the boy to father-mother to grandma was just too real.
Going in the first few minutes, I thought it would be another classic struggle of an immigrant family-type movie; yes it is a struggle of an immigrant family but the delivery is not like one, it felt like it's everyday life, your usual family, and most importantly, shared hope and dream.
It was definitely a blessing to watch the movie and I strongly recommend you to watch this as well.
