Rainbow Six: Rogue Spear (1999)
Tom Clancy: the modern Saint.
There's no wonder why many politicians, including some former presidents, read all of the Tom Clancy novels. Where once he was accused of being naive or over-presumptious, now he is seen as a man who should head both the FBI and CIA. Had he been the head of just one, perhaps September 11th, 2001 would never have happened. His books, as with his video games, are heavily researched to have plausible situations. This video game is perhaps the best game around that deals with current issues. And, if you just wanna blow away some terrorists and vent your anger, it's good for that too!
Star Wars: Episode II - Attack of the Clones (2002)
Possibly the best in the trilogy!
Imagine this was a non-star wars movie... just imagine that. It would have rave reviews, most critics would praise it... but for some reason "star wars" is already held higher than other movies. people expect too much these days. if you (re)watch the original trilogy, especially a new hope, you will find a lot of poor dialogue, plot flaws and certainly bad acting. this movie was extremely well done. the acting was superb. ewan mcgregor mimicks alec guiness to the key! Hayden Christensen is a good desgruntled anakin. i have seen other movies with him, and it seems this is the role he hits right on the nose. natalie portman was not only extremely sexy but developed as a character. instead of being the monotonous character from episode 1, she is a fun loving, emotional beauty. christopher lee plays both sides perfectly, but Ian McDiarmid does it even better. the visuals in this movie blow away spiderman, the matrix and any other "blockbuster" movies to be released. it easily blows away films unworthy of the best visual effects award. it even rivals the lord of the rings. the dialogue between the two lovers is exactly how most young adults act and talk. yes it is cheesy at times, but isn't that the way all young lovers are? the plot was *brilliant*. the jango fett/bobba fett relationship was ingenius. watching obi-wan on his investigation was fascinating. jar jar was *not* annoying at all. c3po and r2d2 almost stole the show, but the real person who stole it (and who will be remembered for it) is yoda! nothing, not even gandalf vs the balrog, can compare to yoda fighting. i was in pure ecstatic bliss and awe. is it better than episode one? hells ya! easily! better than jedi? for sure. better than the original? in my opinion yes. better than empire? it's a tough call, but considering that lucas had very little to work with since he *had* to get in many subplots to fill in episodes 4-6 (which, btw, worked perfectly, ie. lars owen) it definetely can rival it. there are *sooo* many parallels to episode 5 (empire) that are just wonderous to watch, and the cliffhanger finalé really makes me want a lot more. only 3 more years of waiting until the circle is complete. lucas has truly made a masterpiece. ps, i can't wait to see it on pure digital screen!
Collateral Damage (2002)
Awesome movie. Don't listen to the critics!
The critics are wrong. The most part of them are pro-American, pro-patriotic uninformed imbeciles. Comparing this movie to September 11th IS unfair!!! It was made *before* September 11th. Had September 11th NOT happened you would be hearing *much* better reviews. I really thought this movie was well done in its attempt to be un-biased. When I saw Arnie drinking from a mug filled with American flags I became suspicious that this would be a patriotic American film, but am glad to say it is not. It *actually* showed the views of the Columbians, and especially with the story of how The Wolf became bad it made us actually try and see and perhaps understand the other side. I've read some very bad reviews about this movie, but all I have to say is that there were people crying at the beginning of this movie (when his family gets killed). One reviewer wrote, "this film is so unrealistic and stupid that you can't help but laugh at many scenes throughout the movie that were not meant to be funny." If this one of the scenes she meant then I pity her. I highly recommend this movie.
The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring (2001)
Best novel ever. Best movie ever.
I can't tell you how, but I saw the first installment of the Lord of the Rings and it literally blew me away in every aspect. The actors were all perfect (Ian McKellan, Chris Lee and Viggo Mortenson were dead on). The shrinking of the hobbits and dwarf (let's not forget Gimli) were done to perfection you never even considered that they weren't the same height. It never looked phony. The cinematography and art direction will win hands down at the Oscars. So will Peter Jackson for best director. The only complaint I have about this movie is, as a Tolkien fan, it was too short. I completely agreed with the cutting out of scenes and the 'refining' of others to give the story more appeal. I had no problem with Liv Tyler's acting or her replacing Glorfindel. I think it is essential to the later movies. The ringwraiths are very frightening and I guess my only complaint (well more like a comment) is that young children WILL be afraid... I have no complaint because unlike Star Wars 1 and Harry Potter, this movie IS made for adults and not children or pre-teens. I give it a 10/10. It will be very hard to wait another year for the two towers, and maybe even harder to wait another week to see the film again. Kudos to the actors, director, WETA and everyone else who took part in this epic movie. JRR Tolkien would be proud.
Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone (2001)
Good, but not great. Certainly not a classic.
I am 19 years old, and have read the first two books in the Harry Potter series. The books are great and I can understand all the hype. I was looking forward to this movie, but seeing the trailer gave me the impression it wouldn't be great. In watching the movie two nights ago at the staff preview and again last night I just thought the movie felt too rushed. It tried to include everything in Rowling's book which didn't capture all the plots in the story and in fact ruined some. The movie lost lots of the humor and emotion found in the book. Also, my friends who hadn't read the books were confused in a few parts since the plot had holes. They didn't even see Potter as being this great wizard. The movie was definitely written for people who had read the books. I would give this movie 2 1/2 stars out of 4. On a further note, being a young adult/late teenager, I can understand the appeal this movie will have to children 12 and under. They will want to go see it many times, I won't go again. One thing that bothers me about this movie is that it is the current fad, and for deserving reasons, the books are great, however, just like the latest Britney Spears cd, everyone will be running to the theaters to buy their ticket. I realize this movie will probably break the $400 million mark due to repeat viewings by younger children and their parents. Good for Potter, but it saddens me that this movie will do better in the box office than the Lord of the Rings. This bothers me for the Lord of the Rings will be a better movie but I do not think will make as much money due to all the repeat viewings of children and their parents. Both movies are worth seeing. But let's not pretend that Harry Potter is a classic when it's not.
Wo hu cang long (2000)
Over-hyped
There have been much better foreign (especially Asian) movies made of the same genre that far surpass this one's story. It has been over-hyped, and does not deserve the attention it got. If you want to experience and understand asian culture watch some Bruce Lee movies, not this propaganda.
The Usual Suspects (1995)
Easily, THE best twist ending of all time!
With an all-star cast of Kevin Spacey, (Oscar winner, and deservingly, I will add) Benicio Del Toro (future Oscar winner), Stephen Baldwin, and Gabriel Byrne this movie delivers in an original way. It's ending goes down as the best twist ending in any movie to date, contested only by the new movie Memento. This is an A+ movie, 10/10. Recommend for all (except small children).
The Princess Bride (1987)
Best, funniest fantasy movie ever
The Princess Bride is the best fantasy film ever made. It has the most unique humour to it that will make viewers want to re-watch the movie over and over again. Cary Elwes (perhaps better known in Robin Hood:Men in Tights) is just hilarious in this great film. The Wonder Years' Kevin Arnold is fantastic alongside Columbo. The late André the Giant plays the cutest role in the movie, and with a revengeful swordsman, an evil villain and an esoteric man, this movie is simply an instant classic. It's simply "Inconceivable".
