A tragic leap into human consciousness
7 July 2023
The beautiful animation, the different styles and quick pace. The striking colours, the absence of needless components, and the empathetic characters. But the theme...

It is the theme that makes this picture a 9 for me. It is the tears during an emotional scene, it is the rethinking of your own attitude and thinking patterns that display the real value of a motion picture.

And "Tiger is strolling around" does just that.

Tragic music, the connection to the real world and depiction of an authentic obsessive disorder - that's what makes this film stand out. The emotional punch packed into the beautiful stylish box, that withdraws from constraints of reality to then show the most grounded case of human nature eating itself alive.

Must-watch. Must-feel. And mast-erpiece.

Are you scared yet? You probably won't be

Movie overuses the "hey, something is wrong with her" trick so much, that the story of the movie becomes extremely obvious at minute 10-15. Characters, except for Nim, her sister, and Mink are totally useless. Camera men are... well, cameras with legs. And the whole plot becoms more and more dull.

And it is extremely unfortunate.

This movie contains all the ingridients for a cult classic: a fresh setting, a culturally rich mythical background, and great cinematography. And what do you do with all that? Right.

You input as many cliches as possible.

As I see it, this movie is a good enough idea. And if it would stick to things that separate it from western garbage found footage movies, which are cultural identity and mythology - this movie would potentially reach the level of "The Wailing". But as it stands right now - this is nothing more, than moaning.

Genre baby

This is a first psychological thriller in the history of Russian cinema and to my surprise - it turned out pretty... pretty good.

To be honest, first half of the movie was a little too mysterious. It can often be reminiscent of David Lynch's works, but only in terms hard-to-interpretate aspect.

The second half of the movie though, that is when the movie really kicks in and delivers a cool, somewhat classic for the genre, finale.

Overall movie is good enough, but for what it represents in Russian cinema history - it deserves to be watched by anyone interested in thrillers and even horror.
