Killers of the Flower Moon (2023)
Leaves you feeling apathetic even though you want to care for the characters and their lives.
The expectations for this movie were awfully high and I feel like it did not deliver. The runtime is insanely too long. If cut an hour short it would have the same effect as it does now. Although you have to appreciate the talent of the Actors and Marty of course, but something just didn't feel right. It didn't have the effect it was supposed to have. I didn't feel touched the way i wanted to. The injustice, the pain these people felt was just not delivered in a way that would really touch the audience. If you are not American and don't know a lot about this part of history it's a great learning piece, but aside from that It just doesn't leave you wanting to learn more or feel for these people the way you should and that's a shame. Still the movie is great in capturing corruption and telling the story of true crime in a respectful way.
Slow (2023)
Mediocrity.
Lets cut to the chase. The movie isn't good. It's extremely annoying and every character speaks in a very unnatural tone and manner. It's comes across as very pretentious with its themes too. They are showing a very interesting asexual character, but without going into detail with his story they just stay on Elena and her little tantrums over the fact that he doesn't want to have sex with her. And that happens a lot in the film, to the point where my eyes were rolling. Her character's dialogue was extremely cringey and everytime she was arguing she made no sense, therefore, making me feel like the script was just plain bad. The saving grace of this film was Dovydas played by Kestutis Cicenas. He was funny and the whole time i was waiting for his story to unravel and i wanted to know more about what his character is feeling, but it's just never shown. Overall the movie is extremely mediocre so don't bother, there are better films about relationships.
Ps. The camera work was great, it's shot in film, it's give out a nice and intimate vibe which I didn't hate.
Aftersun (2022)
An incredible film that will break you in half.
Go into this movie with caution. It might break you. I cried for hours after finishing watching it on the big screen. It's even more heartbreaking in cinemas. For those who have complicated relationships with their fathers or a memory they are holding onto long after it's passed this movie will be a masterpiece. It deserves all of the awards and praises. The pace is good. Not too long not too short . It says everything that has to be sad without being obvious or repetitive as themes of depression and complicated relationships can get. It stays with you long after watching , so be mentally prepared.
Babylon (2022)
Everything we do has a point but like it doesn't?
The movie doesn't know whether it's a social commentary or a love letter to Hollywood which is why it kind of works. Firstly it's over the top and fun like a big picture is supposed to be on the other hand sometimes it's very banal and obvious. However the actors did a great job even though Brad Pitt was just playing himself at times. Margot Robbie, Samara Weawing and Tobey Maguire went completely cuckoo bananas making the film actually entertaining and fun to watch. Shoutout to Jovan Adepo for phenomenal acting and giving the movie some depth. The soundtrack is very good though and keeps you engaged throughout. It's not a must watch, but if you are a movie lover you'll see many nods to many famous movie scenes and sayings . All in all you'll be entertained.
All Quiet on the Western Front (1930)
the best anti-war movie to ever exist.
The ending where they show the soldiers looking back at the truck leaving them in the trenches and then it merging with the scene with all of those tombstones broke me and to this day it's one of the most beautiful artistic moments in movie history, how everything tied up, how all of them died. Movies about war are too glorified these days.... This movie shows the real horror, the guts , the gore. Those hands on the wire or paul crying in that hole with the French soldier he just killed just shatters your heart and makes for the best anti-war movie to ever exist... the backstory of every extra in the movie being an actual war veteran just adds to the authenticity too.
Shame (2011)
Addiction shown in an interesting and raw way
A movie that showcases addiction in a very interesting and raw way. The acting is great , the plot is not the most exciting one. The sex scenes are surprisingly not overly sexualized , quite the opposite actually. They are very needed to show the patheticnesss and sadness of the protagonist.
The Bee Gees: How Can You Mend a Broken Heart (2020)
A lovely time
A documentary that stays with you for a long time. A must watch if you love disco and 70s music. But even if you don't it's still worth watching cause of themes it touches upon. Addiction, family drama and insides of music industry.
Good Time (2017)
Irritating movie with great acting
Great performances, but the movie in itself was irritating. It dragged even though the runtime was only 1h41m. Apart from the intense acting and great visuals there is nothing to take from this film. The premise is simple and it gets quite boring.
Bergman Island (2021)
Good idea but to slow and empty
Without giving anything away i love the idea that there is a movie within a movie , but with not that much of a plot , the movie mainly focuses on emotions of the characters that are left unsaid , it is very slow paced and not much happens. The cinematography is beautiful and it showcases the picturesque nature pf sweden . It is nice but not revolutionary, pretty boring at times and it is definitely a feel good movie, but with lots of heartbreak and with the sad reality of estranged relationships . The movie is kind off a love letter to a famous Swedish film director Ingmar Bergman and his works. An honorable mention goes to initially a secondary role, but Mia Wasikowska stole the show and it was a delight watching her on screen.
