Fly Rocket Fly (2018)
Great take on a little known story
I stumbled upon Fly Rocket Fly on the French/German channel ARTE earlier this year and I am glad I did. This documentary has a lot to tell as the underlying story is pure gold. The filmmakers had access to most of the key players here for a first-hand account of how a small team of German engineers went on a mission in the middle of nowhere in Zaire to build a rocket launcher. Another case of reality is stranger than fiction indeed.
Stellar effort from director Oliver Schwehm with a superb storytelling of Herzogian proportions. My hope is the film reputation and fame are going to take off on their own merits so that we can enjoy watching a second film to discover the Libyan adventures of the OTRAC crew.
(October 2021 edit) A follow up has been released as a TV Movie called "Deutsche Raketen für Gaddafi", albeit this effort was much less ambitious than the original film.
Beastie Boys Story (2020)
Read their book instead
I was very curious about this from the start : a *Spike Jonze* *documentary* about the *Beastie Boys*, what could go wrong ? Well let's get straight to the point : the format chosen, a filmed live stage show, just does not work for them. After one hour and half of it I dropped the TV remote unable to cope anymore with this Beastie Boys x Annual Corporate Meeting show x TED crossover.
So my first advice would be to skip this so called documentary and go for the excellent book they released last year. And my second one would be for those who enjoyed the film but do not know the book : read it !
Making a Murderer (2015)
Overstretched and way overrated
Impressed by the ratings and the very good critics, I kept watching one episode a day until the last one. And now I keep scratching my head and wished I had done anything else as 10 hours of Windows Minesweeper would have been more entertaining. The first episodes caught my attention enough to get going but then it was all downhill
It is a one sided, thus heavily biased, view of a criminal case that is badly edited and overstretched. I really feel cheated by the critics on this one.
This has nothing to do with The Jinx, these two series are not of the same class. You should look elsewhere for an enticing series on a criminal case, go for The Jinx, The Staircase or Sin City Law to name a few. If still you want to give it a try, I would recommend to have a look at the case online first and to drop the series as soon as you get bored because it will not get better in the later episodes.
Equilibrium (2002)
Dull and pretentious
I had high hopes for this movie when I saw the 7+ rating but I got hugely disappointed as time went by. Basically it's Matrix meets Crouching Tiger fight scenes plus some cheesy sci-fi plot stolen from here and here.
B-rated stuff capitalizing on Matrix sequel hype, nothing interesting here for cinephiles.
