The Line (2021)
No justice for Whistle Blowers
This is a great documentary. I nearly stopped watching it halfway through episode three however I decided to stick it out. The reason I nearly pulled the plug was how disgusted I was at the course of events once Eddie Gallagher's social media/marketing savvy wife started a PR campaign which ultimately ended up with Trump involved and blindly supporting Gallagher and his actions. I guess I shouldn't be surprised by that though - that's essentially how the Apprentice guy became president right? Only in America. Anyhoo, while Gallagher's story and his acquittal is public domain, this documentary gives depth to how that occurred - sadly the seal team members who had the moral courage to expose this did so at great personal expense ultimately. But we can all see they did the right thing and I hope they are sleeping well at night - they deserve to be.
Bravo Two Zero (1999)
Movie took the same approach as the Bravo patrols - cheap and nasty
I have only just attempted to watch this movie having just finished reading Bravo Three Zero by Des Powell. I had read Bravo Two Zero soon after it had been released and found the story to be interesting and engaging - although now of course most of "Andy McNab's" claims have been questioned by reputable sources. But it was an entertaining story nevertheless so I thought I'd try watching the movie. Wow - what an embarrassment. It's so poorly filmed and acted and so obviously low budget, it's unwatchable. You couldn't even blame the era it was filmed - Black Hawk Down was produced in a similar period, the differences are significant. All Bravo authors (Powell, McNab and Ryan) have blamed the British approach to military planning, intel and equipment etc in the failure of the Bravo missions. I would say McNab's approach to this movie is another good example of the way the brits do things in contrast the the Americans - this "movie" is so poorly resourced and executed, as a mission it was always doomed to fail. Don't bother.
The West Wing (1999)
Hasn't aged well
I tried watching this show for the first time recently. Wow, how bad is it, I couldn't get past the first two episodes.
After watching smarter political dramas now (e.g. House of Cards) it's hard to take a show like this seriously.
Very 1990s drama and acting. A lot of shouting, moving around frenetically, and high drama (poor) acting. Doesn't cover up for weak script writing.
The Sopranos (1999)
Brilliant
I've just watched this show for the first time (yes, it's true) and it was fantastic. I can see why this show is number 1 on all of the tv show lists.
Smart script writing, humour and great acting.
And 20 years on, this show still holds up well (unlike some others - West Wing)
Mare of Easttown (2021)
Only made it to Episode 4
This is a very depressing show, there's nothing to draw you in and the characters are all so unlikeable - Mare included.
After just watching the excellent Sopranos series for the first time, I thought I'd give more HBO shows a go. Mare is a pale comparison. I hope there are some other quality HBO shows worth watching, but this aint one.
This is your typical lazy Hollywood crime plot, based on an endless stream of red herrings. Dysfunctional cop loses badge and gun, goes it alone to solve yet another serial offender, locking girls up in basements (yawn).
