Mechenosets (2006)
I you wanna watch this movie you gonna need a hell lot of patience
For everyone who expects a traditional superhero-movie it might be an unpleasant surprise. It is definitely more of a drama rather than an action movie. It focuses mainly on emotions and it's a bit like a Greek tragedy - whatever the main character does it always goes wrong somehow.
That's because Sasha, like each superhero, takes the law into his own hands and the society doesn't appreciate it. Sasha becomes an outlaw. While on the run, he meets a beautiful girl and falls in love so things get even more complicated for him.
As you can see, the plot itself is really dramatic but the movie lacks in dynamics. It reminds me slightly of the narration in the recent movies by Ram Gopal Varma. Everything happens very slowly. However, when there's an action scene it gets so immensely dynamic that before you realize what's going on, it's all over. But the director does not want to impress us with flashy and showy action. What is more important here is the outcome of Sasha's actions, which are mostly very drastic. The score is very scarce, which also makes it more difficult to concentrate on the film. So basically you need to be very patient in order to watch it.
Is the film worth it? That is a question really difficult to answer. I don't think that this experience enriched me so very much, but somehow I keep on thinking about this movie and feel like watching it again. Mostly due to the atmosphere, which is really dense, but not suffocating because all the time Sasha and Katya have hope. After all they're young people, who have all their lives to live. So no matter how hard it gets there's always a slight joyous tune when they are together.
Kabhie Kabhie (1976)
Certainly not a master piece but still the best movie by Yash Chopra I have ever seen
I have only recently realized that in fact I don't really like Yash Chopra's movies. These were really the first Bollywood films I have seen so I just thought - that's Bollywood, it's OK. However, later I thought - hang on a second, how come other movies are so much better than these? Most of Yash Chopra's movies were fine, you can't really see any significant flaws in them but they just lack something. I don't know what it is, it's just that somehow they don't make the right use of their potential.
However, I did like "Kabhie Kabhie" quite a lot. Out of all the movies by Yash Chopra that I have watched, this is the best one. Actually, at first I thought it was really crap but I changed my mind about it.
At first I thought the story was just ridiculous. Now I think it's actually quite good. A fresh look at the question of whether past is really past and if we are allowed to forget it or not. What I liked in the movie was that the characters weren't at all perfect - they had a lot of weaknesses. Especially Big B.'s character, of course. And Vicky, played by Rishi, who really annoyed me at first, but now I think it was a pretty interesting character. So was Pinky. Sweety is terribly spoiled and this begs the question how come that such cultured people could raise such an ill-mannered and silly girl. However, apart from Sweety all the other characters are pretty convincing. The happy ending comes somehow too quickly, like in 'Silsila'. I think that people normally need more time to sort out their problems, but basically I liked the message in this movie.
My favourite character was definitely Vijay, played by Shashi Kapoor, who surprisingly turns out to be the most mature character of all and makes Amitabh finally understand his mistake. Basically, I think Shashi and Rakhee rock in this movie. Rakhee may seem too perfect to some people but I also liked her for that reason, Pooja is really a very likable character. Neetu Singh was also very good, I mean: making a person named Pinky a complex character - that is really amazing.
The Chronicles of Narnia: Prince Caspian (2008)
I don't believe it actually surpassed my expectations
I was expecting something big, something more mature and... it was exactly the way I dreamed it would be. Or even better. First of all I must write that Ben Barnes really is extremely good-looking. I never thought while watching the trailers that I would fancy him so much. He's got a lot of charisma. The rest of the cast was great too, my personal favourite was Pierfrancesco Favino as General Glozelle. The four kids from the previous movie were also very good. I loved Skandar, just the way I loved him in the first movie but this time his character is quite different. To the benefit of the story, I think. There's more action and I love action, so naturally I was very happy about that. Besides, this time the girls, especially Susan, are also involved in it, which also pleases me. What I especially like about this movie is that you can actually observe a change in Narnia. Last time we had something like Middle Ages and now we moved on to Renaissance. Weapons and armour have evolved. Well, they still haven't invented gunpowder but it's already quite impressive considering that in Middlearth nothing changed in 3000 years! I liked the music, of course. I liked the sets. I liked the locations (some stuff was shot in Poland:). I liked the battle scenes much more than in the first movie. I liked the costumes, I think they improved a lot since the first Narnia. In fact, I like everything about this movie. Even the Polish dubbing was OK (because in Poland that usually is a problem). The movie is much darker than the first one and that's what I like most about it. But it is also probably the main flaw of it. Some children were actually quite scared at times. On the other hand, the adults still treated it just as a children's story. Personally, I think it's a grave mistake. I'm of the opinion that we should forget our ridiculous stereotypes about fairy tales and fantasy and let ourselves be mesmerized by movies like "The Chronicles of Narnia" because it is worth it.
