The Millionairess (1960)
Remember the garter belt!
Amazing that nobody commented on Sophia guepiere and garter belt!
O.K. Guys. The movie is somewhat dull and you may be sure that neither Sophia Loren or Peter Sellers could have been nominated for Oscar on this performance. But, does anybody remember the scene when Sophia undresses in Peter,s doctor cabinet and shows herself in a black guepiere , black stockings and garter belt? If you have forgotten this, you are only forgiven if you are younger than two years or older than ninety-nine And , moreover, we were back in 1960, when such scenes in movies, particularly in my native Italy, were not frequent! For the remaining part, I must agree that the story is weak, the other actors ( including an improbable Vittorio De Sica) are unnoticeable, and Sophia as a millionaire is less credible than as a Naples Pizza seller!
Neighbors (1981)
Funny and yet leaves a sense of sadness
This movie is listed as a comedy, and therefore it is supposed to make us laugh. To be sure, we do occasionally laugh ;yet there is a disturbing flavor of sadness and bitterness both in the plot and in the characters. To begin with, those two houses, at the end of a suburban road, close to a swamp and a high voltage power transmission tower are exceedingly depressing. One learns from the plot that there is not even a decent restaurant at any short driving distance. And , as far as other people around, besides the five major characters, simply forget about them !!! I strongly suspect that acting in this movie may have played a not insignificant role in John Belushi " almost" suicide, shortly after.
From Here to Eternity (1953)
may be not for eternity, but for fifty years yes
Yes. Fifty years have gone since this movie was issued ( I only saw it for the first time about forty years ago, because I had no the age in 1953) and yet you can say that the basic human feelings the movie deals with are still valid and up to date, even if the 50`s way of presenting them is by now out of fashion. But there are still plenty mean and selfish men like the Captain, idealistic guys like Prewitt, and torrid love has not changed an inch since Lancaster and Kerr were embracing on the Oauh beach. And finally there is a glimpse of Honolulu as we will never see again in the final scene of the ship sailing. I was in Hawaii on 1990; too late!!
Next Stop Wonderland (1998)
Blame it on the Bossa Nova
What I liked better in this pleasant and well directed movie is the background of Brazilian Bossa Nova music playing in a very nordic and "WASP" Boston. What I liked less is the gallery of negative male characters, hinting that every possible man in the market is spending most of his time trying to fool around young ,single women. It would be a statistical disaster if, in order to find the right match,a woman should rely on a casual encounter with a "fish-nut"!
Orfeu Negro (1959)
A happy marriage of greek myths with bossa-nova
If you have not been in Rio yet, do not expect you will be able to see the city shown in this movie ; it is gone forever. But the favelas are still there and it is not unrealistic to believe that small and big tragedies like the one of Orfeo and Eurydice, sometimes with a little bit of afro-american magics, take place everyday in the outskirts of the "cidade maravilhosa". Music and poetry of Vinicius de Moraes are already immortal and need only to be listened in the concentration deserved by every masterpiece
