Barnaby Jones: Venus as in Flytrap (1974)

Who Wrote This? A Twelve Year Old?
16 February 2024
Warning: Spoilers
I had high hopes for this episode going into it with a cast like Ed Nelson and Jessica Walter, but my hopes were quickly dashed as the plot progressed. The acting was not the problem; it was the horrible script and poorly-written characters. Barnaby barely had to do any work to figure out the crime because the gooney couple right out of a screwball comedy had no careful planning whatsoever. They were practically begging to be caught! It's like, what did they think would happen? Especially in the second death. And why did Barnaby spend all that time whipping the fire in the barn with his suitcoat (which was clearly doing nothing) instead of shooting the chain off the door like he finally thinks to do later? As someone else mentioned, it just seemed like extremely lazy writing. Though I love Ed Nelson and Jessica Walter, don't waste your time on this episode. It's not only silly but quite cliche.

The Good, Old Reading of the Will Trope
30 November 2023
Nothing new plot-wise in this episode. We've seen it before. A rich, grumpy old man dies, and the family all gathers together to read his will--even fight to become the heir if necessary. Though I do love this trope no matter how many times it's done, this one fell somewhat flat for me. First off, Jaime looks nothing like the person she's supposed to be impersonating. Yes, it's been eighteen years since the family saw her, but wouldn't they remember Tracy's skin tone was exceptionally darker? I liked how clever the riddle turned out to be, but I wish the rest of the oddball family would have been more involved in the hunt before disappearing. The code names with Oscar was weird. Don't remember them ever doing that before. And I loved seeing William Windom, though I wish his role would have been bigger. Also, this is a bit unrelated, but does Vincent Price remind anyone else of Eve Arden? Just me? Okay.

Oh, boy...

Warning: Spoilers
I've heard about these episodes for years and always thought it was a movie up until recently. I decided to watch them out of curiosity and it sure is apropos for today. I do have some speculations, though. They clearly gave Pat's character more of a surgical change than facial and yet they pass it off as merely an easy cosmetic operation. Secondly, I too was appalled that Dr. Gannon just so easily accepted the fact that Pat was a "woman inside of a man's body." Especially in that day and age. As soon as the surgery was done, everybody's fine calling Pat a "she" even though logic would tell them that cutting off some body parts doesn't make you the opposite gender. Third, I found it interesting that the patient with the bad leg wasn't allowed to have self-pity, yet Pat can have all the pity he wants just because he wasn't born a woman. And everyone has to feel sorry for him or they're bigots. Makes you think. The doctors in this episode used the tactic most physicians use now adays, "would you rather have a dead father or an alive mother?" basically. Reed did an amazing job garnering empathy for his character. I have no problem with the acting in these episodes; it was phenomenal. The problem, however, lies with the fact that for decades, people with gender dysphoria (or call it what you will) have demanded affirmation for their psychological issues and we've placated them. I have much sympathy for those suffering, feeling as though they're in the wrong body. But the answer is not in cutting up your body. What you're looking for can't be found in some kind of personal identity. What you're looking for, is a relationship with God. The God who created you, who makes no mistake.

A Real Snoozefest
20 October 2023
If you like movies that move along at a snail's pace, then this is the movie for you. I decided to watch this movie for Marj Dusay, who is probably only in four or five scenes total. The whole movie lacked intrigue and was filled with more wordless scenes of people trekking through snow than anything else. I enjoyed Stella Stevens' character though, she and Marj giving the film its only good points. If I could rate this movie any lower than a 1, I would. No, I didn't have to sit through the whole movie if I hated it, but I'm a completionist. I have nobody to blame but myself. Even still, thought I should warn that the glowing reviews this movie has received on this page might be a little exaggerated. Of course, all are free to their movie opinions!

What a trip!
19 October 2023
I have to agree with Mark, the only thing good this movie had going for it was Marj Dusay. The only reason I watched this painful movie was because of her. The plot lacked clarity, and though the dialogue could sometimes drag a chuckle out of me, it often fell flat. I don't usually mind when a movie over-explains itself, but this one did just the opposite. Like with Marj finding the man in the freezer...there's no explanation given! It's like all of the characters have a bunch of private jokes going on that the viewers know nothing about. The most puzzling thing to me was the man in the wheelchair. Who was he? And how in the world was he driving that car if, I'm assuming, he couldn't use his legs? This movie could have wrapped everything up in at least 40 minutes. Unfortunately, that wasn't the case. It's not even "so bad it's good." Don't waste your time with this movie...unless you want to see Marj. :)

Brilliant.
15 October 2023
When I first started watching this episode and saw the plot unfold, I thought it was a bit cliche. I mean, I guessed who the killer was close to the beginning. But as the story went on, it showed it had a lot more layers. I loved the whole psychological aspect between the mother and daughter. Not only did Julie Adams do beyond amazingly, as she always did, in this role as the obsessed-with-looks mother, but Cahterine Burns held her own as well. Very well-cast and well-written, keeping me on the edge of my seat and questioning the sanity and capabilities of the mother and daughter simultaneously until the very end. I even got chills at the closing shot. 10/10, well done!

Who's Telling the Truth?
4 October 2023
I used to watch this show when I was a kid and haven't given it the time of day since. But I saw Marj Dusay starred in this episode and I had to give it a watch. Marj gets to show off her talent for dialects in this episode, playing a French woman in distress. Honestly, I wasn't quite sure if her character was guilty or not up until the very end. I have to say, I enjoyed her and Josh together. They made a cute couple, despite the circumstances. Don't remember quite how the rest of this show fairs, but I highly recommend watching this one episode. Even if just to see Marj Dusay doing a very convincing French accent.

Stellar Episode
30 September 2023
This is the first episode of "Mancuso, FBI" I've ever watched, and the only reason I tuned in this time was because I knew Marj Dusay was starring. Not only was her performance top notch, Marj's character giving her the chance to show her acting chops, but the storyline wasn't bad either. It held my interest and kept me on the edge of my seat when the heat got turned all the way up. I also really enjoyed Marj and Robert Loggia's chemistry & the past their characters had. They had some sweet scenes. They should have brought Marj back as a reoccurring character, at least in one or two more episodes. And even though I'm brand new to this show, by the end of the episode, I was already getting fond of the regular cast members. 10/10.

Wow.
22 September 2023
Perhaps I rated this episode a little high. Maybe it doesn't deserve a "ten", but I liked it a lot. Mostly because of Ray Wise. The woman who played his wife didn't do bad either. I was really shocked at how "graphic" the fight scene at the end was since usually when Jonathan and Jennifer get roughed up, there's nary a scratch on them afterward. Whoever was in charge of the fight scene really had fun with the fake blood. At least it was more realistic. As someone else reviewed, it was interesting seeing Jonathan and Jennifer arguing for a change. I liked it. It made them more believable. All in all, a good episode, especially for Season Five.

Monica Becomes a Mother...Again
19 September 2023
Though I'm not really a fan of "The Facts of Life," only going through the specific episodes Marj Dusay is in, I have to say from what I have seen so far, Marj was perfect casting for Blaire's mother. They truly act like mother and daughter; I have no struggle believing their characters are related. To add, I love how many layers there are to Monica. She's not just a one-dimensional character. The episode before this one that Marj was in "Sisters" was so funny and showed how good Marj was at comedy. Then in this episode, we get to see how great Marj is at also the more emotional scenes. I love that the writers allowed Monica to be shaped as a person and not just an airhead. Truly enjoyed this episode.

Enjoyable Introduction
15 September 2023
I'm in my early twenties and grew up "watching" Star Trek with my family. Of course, as a kid I didn't really "watch," just picked up bits and pieces. This is the first episode of the show I've willingly chosen to watch as an adult (because of Marj Dusay) and I have to say, I really enjoyed it. I doubt I'll become a fan of the show, but this episode was pretty enjoyable once the crew discovered the underground civilization. It had lots of funny moments, and I enjoyed Marj's role. I suppose from the rating that most people find this episode to be bad. Must mean the other episodes are great in comparison because I thoroughly enjoyed this "lesser-liked" one.

Like a Bad Car Accident
14 August 2023
Warning: Spoilers
This episode was like a bad car accident. You just couldn't look away. The first thing that made me immediately cringe was the scene where Mike picks up his girlfriend--I mean, his daughter Jeannie at the airport. I haven't mentioned this in my earlier reviews but the relationship between Mike and Jeannie has always made me want to gag. They are WAY too touchy-feely for a normal father and daughter relationship with lingering kisses, longingly staring into each other's eyes, her always calling him Mike, various times where they slap each other playfully on the rear, and now this barfy scene where Jeannie pretends to be interested in HER FATHER because two nosy strangers are watching them already fawning all over each other. I wanted to wash my eyes out with lighter fluid after seeing that. Who thought making them so lovey-dovey was a good idea?? I'm sorry. I'm not one who likes to be touched much, even by loved ones, but I feel like their relationship always went a little too far. Maybe it's just me.

Next was the very annoying character of Chris. Don't get me wrong. I think Pamelyn Ferdin is a talented actress...but whoever wrote her character made her the brattiest, most annoying teenager possible. I have to say, the end scene where Chris finds out her father is a jerk was touching but other than that I really hated this episode. Terrible end to Season Four.

Ford Could Have Won Jennifer
10 August 2023
Warning: Spoilers
Really enjoyed this episode. It was unique, held my interest. It was fun seeing Jonathan get hypnotized for a change. This episode also stars Gwynne Gilford who has been married to the successful actor Robert Pine since the 60's and is the mother of actor Chris Pine. There was one flaw that I found in this episode, but I suppose they wouldn't have had a show in the following week of the writers took this route. When Jonathan and Ford are fighting at the end and Jonathan is inches from falling off the cliff, all Ford would have had to do was say, "How about a third cup of coffee?" and Jonathan would have walked off that cliff if he was told to. Ford missed his chance to win Jennifer's heart (no pun intended... maybe) but I was happy to see Jonathan and Jennifer reunited.

How Is the Rating Not Higher?
4 August 2023
Warning: Spoilers
I thoroughly enjoyed this episode and was surprised to see it has such a low rating. Not only was the plot about the cat burglar and murders interesting and kept me engaged, but I loved that they finally gave Mike a love story. Diane Baker played her role perfectly, nailing the determined female inspector without being obnoxious. I usually find when women are "stubborn" on these old TV shows, they're extremely annoying and worthy of any disdain. Diane executed her performance very well, though, to where I was rooting for her. I really wanted Irene & Mike to be together. Sure, they had their differences but they clearly were adult enough to work through them. Unfortunately, it seems Irene never makes another appearance on the show, much like Steve's disappearing girlfriends. I'm just glad they didn't kill her off. 10/10 for me!

I'm...So Confused
30 July 2023
Warning: Spoilers
The beginning of this episode was all right. Kind of slow-paced but not horrible. I actually was fooled into believing Jonathan was playing the trumpet until I read HilaryElizabeth9's review. I did start to get confused, though, when Victoria broke things off with Russel. She said "It's no longer the two of us," or something like that. Not only did she further explain what that meant but Russel didn't even ask! He just lets her walk off and accepts his fate that she was breaking up with him. Doesn't sound like the behavior of a man who wanted to marry her.

Then when Russel gets drunk and Victoria comes back, apologizing for singing and that she "should have realized..." She never finishes her sentence before the scene cuts, prompting even more questions of why she's changing her tune (no pun intended) toward him so suddenly.

Then fast-forward to the end when Anita is revealed to be the killer. (I saw that coming from a mile away.) Though I had a very strong suspicion Anita was guilty, her reasoning made absolutely no sense. It turns out that Anita is actually Victoria...? Then who in the world was the Victoria that died?! And there was no explanation for why there were duplicates of different sized dresses in the closet. There was no explanation for why Anita started to think Jennifer was Victoria...when she knew SHE HERSELF was Victoria? And man, the ending scene where J & J take down Anita (or whoever she is) was utterly laughable. Talk about corny. If someone has a better understanding of this episode, maybe they'd enjoy it, but as for me, I was frowning in confusion the majority of the time.

A Disappointment
29 July 2023
I'm sorry, but this episode just missed the mark for me. Mike Stone's daughter Jeannie has already established herself as not very smart in previous episodes and yet again she makes quite a few foolish moves, even having her deeds encouraged by a fellow adult who should have known better. There were many times the characters over-acted, especially in scenes that are supposed to be intense, which just made them laughable. I got quite a chuckle at the end of Act IV where the rapist pretends to lunge at the woman lawyer and she yelps. I couldn't tell for a moment if she was serious or being sarcastic. Unfortunately, I think she was serious. If you want to watch a whiny episode with bad acting and characters making one stupid decision after another, this one's for you.

Enjoyable but...
29 July 2023
Warning: Spoilers
I really did enjoy this episode, especially the "heated" banter between J & J (once I knew it was all a scheme). But I did find myself asking... didn't they go to a lot of unnecessary trouble pretending to break up? They could have just ignored the weird girlfriend stuff and lived their lives. Either they'd find the odd occurrences were nothing but pranks/misunderstandings or they'd find out what the perpetrator really wanted from them eventually. The bad guy's motivation was to get them to break up anyway. If they just would have ignore the gifts and the phone calls (seems much easier) the bad guy (don't remember his name) would have given up sooner or later when he saw his tricks weren't working. I don't know, maybe J & J's whole plot would have made sense if they already knew about the bet and were trying to smoke out the culprit. All in all, it gets an 9/10 from me.

Waste of Time
22 May 2023
The only reason I sat through this whole movie was because of Carol Lynley, and I am disappointed to admit I wasn't all too thrilled with her performance. You can't say it's because she was too young. I've seen her in things where she was much younger and did ten times better than this role. Don't know why she decided to play the role of Allison so stoically. It looked like she had a stomachache the majority of the time. Perhaps Carol was just as bored with the script as I was. Or maybe she was grossed out that a forty-something-year-old man was playing her love interest when she was only nineteen. Yuck!

An Enjoyable Movie
21 May 2023
After reading the reviews here, my hopes weren't high for this movie, but Carol Lynley was in it so I watched. Despite her being the most experienced actress in the whole movie, she was barely in it. Even still, I enjoyed the movie more than I thought I would. It held my interest, though there were a few scenes that seemed to drag on pointlessly. Wish we would have had more moments between Kevin and Claire, but the script writers were more interested in lions jumping on cars, elephants roaming backyards, and women screaming their heads off as if that's going to help anything. Couldn't say I wouldn't do the same in their position though. Hope I never have to find out.

Hospital Drama Turned Soap Opera
13 May 2023
Warning: Spoilers
The episode started out amazing. I truly enjoyed William Windom's portrayal of a distressed husband whose wife is facing death on the operating table. I was rooting for him and Lynn Carlin's characters all the way. Thought they had great chemistry.

Then...the truth comes out that Charlie (Windom) and Ruth (Susan Oliver) are having an affair. Their excuses of why that affair ever began in the first place made me want to yell and scream at them the rest of the episode. I regretted wearing makeup watching this episode because, though try as hard as I might, the plot and its fabulous actors produced many tears from me. Despite my personal feelings about a fictional affair, it was a great and intriguing episode that held my interest. William Windom is one of the best actors of all time. If you want something sad and depressing to watch (but also intense), this is it.

Carol Lynley Has a Vision
11 May 2023
This is the second episode of "The Evil Touch" I've seen, and the first ("Dear Cora, I'm Going to Kill You") wasn't something I was too impressed with. This episode on the other hand was very enjoyable and held my interest. Personally, I think they could have made it into an hour-long episode or even a movie with some diligence. Carol again proved her ability to take on any role. My only complaint is that the episode didn't feel long enough, felt a bit rushed. I guess that's because it was only twenty-something minutes long. Highly recommend this episode for any Carol fans or new watchers of "The Evil Touch" in general.

Carol Lynley as...Who?
27 April 2023
This is the first episode I've seen of "Run for Your Life," and I don't think I've missed out on much. The highlight of this episode was definitely Carol Lynley who we're introduced to as April Martin but later on begin to question that for sure. The actor who plays Paul is admittedly very forgettable. My high rating is in favor of Carol who did another outstanding performance. When they say versatile, they mean actresses like her!

As for the plot of the episode itself, I was quite confused in the beginning, but perhaps it was written to be that way. Either way, I enjoyed this episode (only because of Carol) and if anyone else of lesser talent would have taken her role, I'd rate this episode 2/10.

As a fan of the great Carol Lynley, I've been making my way through her performances and chose this episode of "Thriller" to watch today. I didn't have high hopes. I had never seen an episode of the show before and from the pictures, it seemed like it was going to be a cheap production, but I was very wrong! Not only was it well paced and well written but I enjoyed the different creative camera angles. Carol is amazing as the frightened model Suzy Martin and rightfully so. Even though I had seen the spoiler for the episode, I was still shocked at the end. Highly recommend this episode for any Carol or suspense fans.

An Unexpected Gem
15 April 2023
My hopes were already high for this movie since Carol Lynley was in it, but the plot turned out to be fabulous as well! I think they could have done without the creepy landlord. He didn't give anything to the movie. They also could have probably cut down the time Ann is escaping the hospital. At first, the relationship between the brother and sister struck me as very unsettling and unrealistic...until the ending...and then it all made sense. Somewhat.

Despite some of my critiques, all in all, this was an amazing movie that had me hooked--especially at the end. A definite watch for any Carol Lynley fan or a fan of suspense/mystery movies in general.

Questions...
24 April 2022
Warning: Spoilers
As we saw in the previous episode, someone hits Cole over the head and leaves him to die from car exhaust fumes in the closed garage, even planting a suicide note in his hand. Did the killer really think people would be so gullible as to believe Cole killed himself when he's got a bloody gash in his head?? Apparently, the killer was right because that's what everyone did. Even law enforcement scoffed when Cole told them he'd been struck from behind. When he was found, there was very obviously blood on his temple! Did they think he just knocked himself out and left the car running for no reason? Then when Cole is out of his coma and ready to tell all, Maggie wants to let bygones be bygones and doesn't seem too eager to figure out who clubbed her son over the head and left him for dead

Yes, I know, it's just a TV show, but sheesh!
