Falling in Love (1984)
a simple movie made special by two fantastic actors
The script and plot to this movie is simple, but oh so recognizable. Robert DeNiro and Meryl Streep: These two amazing actors - whose appearance on screen together is absolutely magical - make of this movie a very sweet and subdued production. The plot is simple: two people who don't intend to, get themselves in a situation, both not knowing what to do with: they're shy, not at ease and in love. See it. It will get romance out of your little toe. 8 out of 10
Being John Malkovich (1999)
This is the kind of movie I wish I had come up with
Wow. This is the kind of movie I wish I had come up with. At last we're having a decent American "comedy", without too much morality or hilarity. I put comedy between "", as some people may refer to the word as being non-intellectual and cheap. Not this movie: it's well thought of and the acting is good. And John Malkovich is... well... no words... really. 8 1/2 out of 10
Don't Say a Word (2001)
ok to go see, but don't expect too much of it
Under the cloak of "all work and no play makes Jack a dull boy", Mr Douglas decided to take part in this not so good movie. Yes, ok, it's nice enough to watch on tv or go see in the cinema when there's nothing else... it's not that boring. It's just that the plot is weak, the acting isn't all that good (the part of the female cop is completely redundant and badly acted) and, as I like to call it, a "thirteen in a dozen" thriller. Halfway, I decided to go for 6,5 or 6 out of 10. Fifteen minutes before the end, I decided for 5 out of 10. Go see it, but don't expect too much of it.
Man Trouble (1992)
Movie trouble
Despite the fact that this movie has Jack Nicholson, it isn't saved by it. How much I would like to love everything Mr Nicholson does, I just cannot get used to his more "dumb" roles, like in this one, like in Prizzi's Honor and The Fortune. I think I read somewhere that Mr Nicholson is good in comedies in which the situation is funny, not the character he's playing, and I have to say I quite agree with that. I mean, As Good As It Gets is rated a comedy but, oh my god, what a difference with this one.
About the film: it's weak. As I said, Mr Nicholson doesn't save it and Ms Barkin is a non-interesting person and completely miscasted for this one: she's not funny, but irritating. Anyway, the plot is weak, the "jokes" are weak and the acting is weak. I cannot even say something about the directing, because I'm not sure whether there was one...
I cannot live with myself to rate a movie with Mr Nicholson less than 5 out of 10, so I gave it 5. Without him, it would probably have been 4.
Things You Can Tell Just by Looking at Her (2000)
beautifully subdued acting
I saw this movie as I read a book: beautiful setting, beautiful and subdued acting, beautiful cinematography. Despite the fact that to some people, this seems to be a movie without a plot, it never bored: on the contrary, it quite touched me. 8 out of 10
We're No Angels (1989)
nice interaction between Mr Penn and Mr De Niro
I was pleasantly surprised by this movie. The interaction between Mr De Niro and Mr Penn is quite nice, the story reasonably well and the subtle humour well-placed. Mr Penn gives a good Stan Laurel-like performance and Mr de Niro keeps on amazing me. I mean, compare this role with the one in, for example, Heat: Mr De Niro knows how to handle it. A 6,5 out of 10
Held for Ransom (2000)
Why Dennis, why?
I will never stop wondering why a basically good actor like Dennis Hopper finds himself in a movie like this. Several things aren't just awful, but really, really bad: - the plot, - the acting, - the music, - the script, - etc etc The movie is rated 16+ (why? the once-in-a-while "f***-s" in it?); 12 year olds might be excited by the teen-actors. The story would most likely bore. A 3 out of 10.
Ik ook van jou (2001)
Highly overrated
I tried to see this movie on the first night showing. The show in the city I live in was sold out. "This must be really something", I thought. I now expect that most people leaving the theater that night must have had the same though as I have now, after seeing the movie on DVD: "highly overrated; not living up to it's expectations". I didn't read the book, have to be honest about that. From what I've read, the book's author, Mr Giphart, wasn't really pleased with the movie either. Some remarks: - the plot is too clear; I knew how it would end before the movie was half on it's way - not very well acting from Ms Schijf and Mr Kamerling. The latter is also the narrator and I'm not sure whether it's intended this way, but he's reading lines and that just sounds horrible. The small part of Mr Van Erven Dorens is ok. He's not that good of an actor, but he plays an over the top student-like ("studentikoos" in Dutch) student, in which he succeeds to make him student-like...quite realistic whether you like it or not.
I wouldn't advise this movie to my friends; if it is on tv and you're sure there's nothing else on...well, it's ok to watch it, I guess. Nothing more, nothing less. A 4,5 out of 10
The Astronaut's Wife (1999)
copycat of The Devil's Advocate...not as good though
The movie gets better in the second part. The first part is too slow and lacks tension (or maybe it just doesn't reach the viewer). Mr Depp doesn't come to his full force and Ms Theron is ok, but no more than that. Overall, it's a bit of a weak extract of The Devil's Advocate. Where's Mr Pacino in this one?
