Cuando acecha la maldad (2023)
Cool ideas, but way to many of them at once
This is a fun movie that is trying a lot of things at once. The only thing it does well, is 90% of the effects and gore. Im pretty sure thats what this movie is banking on to get some word of mouth going. However, there is no story, and very loose "horror movie rules"
The "rules" are stated at some point in the movie. But there are like 7 or so and I'd say half of them dont play any part in anything that happens.
*Big Spoilers*
At the climax of the movie, theres a woman that is some kind of expert on this movies brand of demons. She is litteraly yelling at our main guy to not leave the room as per a demon childs advice. She litteraly yells "its a trap, dont leave the room". And then he leaves any way and the kids kill her imediantly and lock him in the other room... and he acts suprised... this kind of stuff makes for a fun laughable horror moment, and theres a lot of those in here. But this is in no way a good movie.
It gets 5 stars for the effects/gore and the laughs it gave me. But the acting is very questionable, the story/premise was not fleshed out enough, and its just got a few to many ideas making it somewhat of a mess.
Crimes of the Future (2022)
Cronenberg ass cronenberg. Mabye to much 🤔
Im sorta conflicted about this movie. I dont think its cronenbergs best film by far but by the end, the concepts and ideas we're pretty cool. The plot is unfortunately disapointingly pretty simple and doesn't feel as fully realized compared to his other movies. I felt like most of the introduction to the world as far as "surgery" (really just extreme "body modification") being and enjoyable facination was not interesting enough to spend practicly the entire 1st half of the movie exploring. But it makes sense cronenberg is obviously into this and is maybe his ideal form of the future hahaha. But really its a catalyst for the otopsy which is where the actual plot begins. That stuff was interesting but it took too long to get there and this weird, horny surgery, conenberg world took away from developing that plot imo because the ending feels somewhat abrupt. I would have rather loved to see more "undercover" plot, the shady plastic eaters maybe do some terrorism or something to make their underground circut more interesting, idk. But the horny surgery was very in your face ane i get dude, ur weird, but everyone is "in with the new flesh" and makes it hard to relate with anyone besides the kids dad, head plastic eater and hes there and gone with like 10-15mins of screen time and like and hour of people being horny and cutting eachother. It would have been cool if it was just a little more subtle and the plot was cooked just a bit longer. But its still cronenberg as hell if nothing else, thats for damn sure.
