Gran Turismo Sport (2017)
Best Racing Game of All Time
I love racing, and I love racing video games. Dirt, WRC, Need for Speed, Burnout, Motogp, F1. All of these franchises have good games and bad games, and the same can be said for the GT franchise, but unlike those others, GT has the BEST racing game of all time: Gran Turismo Sport. This is a perfect racing simulator. It feels real. There's tons of single player content: tons of real-world cars, tons of real-world tracks, and tons of fun to be had. If you're looking for a racing sim, this is definitely the one to get.
The Batman (2022)
Ruined Batman
There's so much wrong with this movie. The first major problem is that it doesn't understand Batman. Batman Forever understood Batman better than this crap. Robert Pattinson plays Bruce Wayne as if he were an emo who spends his days locked in his dark room listening to Nirvana and My Chemical Romance. He doesn't even act like a human. He's like an edgelord teenager. I defended the casting choice leading up to the release of the film, but after seeing it I need to go back and delete every comment defending the casting of Pattinson.
Second problem is Catwoman. Not the performance, but the character herself. She adds nothing to the film and the "romance" between her and Batman was so forced as there was never any chemistry between the two "heroes." The scenes with her are absolutely the most uninteresting and I think it would have benefitted greatly if she was removed so the movie was shorter and more focused on Batman being the detective and going against Penguin and Riddler. The pacing is already super slow but every scene with Catwoman feels like they stretched one page of screenplay into five minutes of film.
Riddler is okay. I like Paul Dano. He doesn't get a lot to do. Penguin actually ended up being more interesting and he was given even less to do.
Jim Gordon in this movie is terrible. Easily the worst character. All he does in this movie is read clues out loud and go "What does this mean???" And then Batman figures everything out. It's so boring.
This is probably a 3/10 movie, but the fact that it's getting such good reviews infuriates me. I hate knowing that this is the future of Batman and Ben Affleck won't be getting his solo movie now after being replaced by an emo loser version of Bruce Wayne. I'm not saying Batman v Superman was great or anything but my God it was better than this by miles. At least it was made by people who are clearly fans of the characters. Everyone in this movie other than Colin Farrell and Paul Dano seem like they're miserable to be in the movie.
This movie is boring and pretentious but has somehow convinced people it's a masterpiece. It's not. It's like the Batman version of Blade Runner 2049 but without the skill behind the camera that Denis Villeneuve brings to his movies. He understands how to make slow movies feel epic and inspiring. Matt Reeves does not.
The Tinder Swindler (2022)
Am I Suppose to Feel Sympathy for the Women?
I honestly don't understand the point of this documentary. Was I suppose to feel sympathy for the women? I didn't. What the guy in this documentary did, I personally know women who have done the exact same thing. I don't understand how you can look at something that both men AND women do (lie for sex) and look at it as if it's only something that men do and the women who fall for it (the women in this documentary are morons btw) are the victims. It feels extremely sexist to me. Things like this happen all the time to both genders and this documentary acts as if this is the only case of it and the man is bad and the women are victims. Probably because they think it's okay when women lie to men to get what they want from them. Just like when Cardi B drugged those guys and faces zero consequences.
Reacher (2022)
Derailed
It started off so strong, but quickly derailed. This is another clear case of wokeness ruining something that could be good. The dialogue is well-written, but it's taken straight from the books, and when it's not you can tell because in one short scene the dialogue will go from great to hilariously bad.
Watch this show and tell me, aside from Reacher, how many good white guys there are. The answer is zero. Every good person is black, female, or both. And every single bad person is a white male. Reacher himself is the only exception to this rule.
Also, there's multiple scenes that deal with racism against blacks, but when characters are roaming the streets I swear 50% of the citizens are black so how is racism against blacks so bad in an area where black people aren't even a minority?
There's a strip club scene in episode five that might be the most cringe thing I've ever seen.
I like Ritchson as Reacher, and I like the dialogue taken straight from Killing Floor. That's where my praise ends. Huge disappointment. Two movies and a TV show and they just can't get Reacher right.
Foundation (2021)
So Disappointed
I'm a huge Asimov fan. He's my favorite science fiction writer and I've read all 7 Foundation novels. I don't know what this show is, but it's not Foundation. This is one of the worst adaptations I've ever seen. I was excited for this show after seeing the breathtaking trailer, but I'm horribly let down by the final product. I wanted to feel like I was rediscovering everything I loved about the books, but this feels like such a departure from the books that the story is unrecognizable. The story barely follows the books, and I don't mind change as long as the change served a purpose and enhances the story for the screen, which is often necessary because books and shows are different, but this story is so much worse. Asimov was a genius AND a writer so his books were always very smart. This show is not. It's filled with dumb stuff that I won't get into because spoilers. The gender-swapping and race-swapping is also terrible, as it breaks the story. There's certain characters you can't gender-swap or else the story doesn't make sense, but that didn't stop them here. I hate this show, so I think I'll just go read the books again. I urge you to do the same.
Dear Evan Hansen (2021)
Almost mediocre, third act makes it terrible
(Minor Spoilers)
For a while, as I sat in the theater watching Dear Evan Hansen, I thought the movie would be fine. I thought it was fine throughout the first act and almost good in the second act, but the third act ruins what would have been just a mediocre film.
The first major issue in this movie is Ben Platt. Sure his voice is good and the songs in the movie are good, and yea he played Evan in the Broadway play, but that's when he was 22-23. He's 27 now and he should definitely have passed the torch at this point because I didn't buy him as a highschooler for one second. And seeing him kiss a girl who looks like a high schooler while he looks 30 was VERY uncomfortable. He also acts less like an anxious boy and more like a psycho. I mean this guy is so disconnected from humanity that he seems alien. I've been in therapy groups and I've talked to many people with anxiety, and none of them were as bad as the "kid" in this movie.
Now that that's out of the way, let's talk about the other issues. The film is too long and not enough happens to warrant the runtime. The songs make their point and then go on for another 2 minutes and you end up bored by the end. The movie has a very mixed message. It wants to be about letting you know you're not alone, but the driving factor is the suicide of a boy no one cared about, and people only really cared after Evan lied about a ton of stuff. The boy also only gets 2 scenes before he kills himself so you have no connection to him.
(Major Spoilers)
Lastly, let's talk about the third act. This is where the movie goes from okay to bad. When Evan admits that he made it all up, you would think that this is where everything falls apart. The movie has been building up to the truth being revealed and what happens afterwards should be the most interesting part of the film, but instead the whole third act evokes the least amount of emotion of any of the three in the movie. Instead of life going bad for Evan, everything's just... fine. There's no falling apart moment. Everything just goes on and he keeps living as if the whole event had never happened. The worst he has to suffer is some bad looks from other kids at school. Him and Zoe are fine after one confrontation and are acting like happy friends again way too soon. Like, girl, he lied about so much involving your brother, but after a while you're just fine and friendly again? It makes no sense.
I could go on a lot longer, but I think I've said enough. This was a very disappointing movie for me after having greatly enjoyed Perks of Being a Wallflower. Hopefully the director's next film is much better than this.
The Suicide Squad (2021)
Best DCEU Film to Date
Great film. Very fun, while also having serious moments that really make you care about the characters. Extremely violent. Great action. I thought it was a weird choice to make Peacemaker invisible for the entire movie but it played well with some of the jokes. Best DCEU film to date, no question.
The Green Knight (2021)
A Hallucination that Favors Style over Substance
This movie reminds me of Blade Runner if BR was set in the 14th century. It's slow, scenes don't really build off each other until the end is reached, and you're left feeling unsatisfactory. I was really excited for this film, and there are good things about it, but beautiful cinematography, pretty music, and a stellar, eerie atmosphere cannot save the film from feeling long, boring, and pointless.
Each scene feels like it's own contained story. Things will happen that will never be explained or brought up again. Interesting decisions that you think will matter later actually don't, and you're left wondering what the point of it all was, if there was one at all. I think the director just wanted to make a film that felt like a fever dream and took you along for the journey instead of making a satisfying movie with a good story and characters we care about, then he absolutely exceeded, and thus I can see why people might like this movie. It's not bad, but it's not for me.
The Nice Guys (2016)
One of the Best Comedies I've Seen
Saw it yesterday and the more I think about it the more I like it. I think back to funny scenes and laugh just playing them in my head. This movie is hilarious. Every joke lands. The performances are perfect. Gosling and Crowe play off each other so well. This is, for me, Shane Black's best film to date.
Black Widow (2021)
Awful, Disappointing
This has to be one of the worst Marvel movies. I'm gonna go into spoilers near the end but I will issue a warning beforehand. First off, the good. This movie starts very well. One of the best for a Marvel film, though I think Civil War or Winter Soldier is the best for Marvel opening scenes. The acting is pretty good, especially Florence Pugh and Scarlett Johansson, who are both excellent. The relationship between Natasha and her sister is written quite well... and that's where my positivity ends. Every other aspect of this movie is so bad that I'm truly surprised. Time for spoilers.
The story for this movie has to be straight up one of the worst for any superhero film ever. The idea is that there's an antidote that can snap Black Widows back to reality if they inhale it. This is ridiculous. 20+ years of conditioning can all be undone by inhaling a weird red gas? Natasha has to stop the guy who is the head of the Black Widow program and free all of the Black Widows. Oh boy. How utterly boring.
I could forgive the bad plot of the action was good but it's not. It's not even mediocre. The action is some of the worst I've seen. It's so shakey and choppy and even the choreography is lazy and boring. The best fight is between Natasha and her sister as it has the best choreography, but it doesn't make up for the god awful editing.
The worst thing about the movie is how there is zero tension. We know Black Widow can't die because this takes place before Endgame, so we never feel like she's in danger. Although they could have at least tried! Show her struggling to get up with cuts and bruises after a bad fall or something. Instead she does things that would kill any human being and walks off without a scratch. Because of this she feels invincible throughout the whole movie and it becomes hard to feel anything for her.
Lastly, the villain. Taskmaster is, without question, the worst villain in any MCU film. For one she (that's right, I said she) never speaks. You know how Taskmaster is egotistical and prideful? Not on this one. Here, she's mute. They also made her a girl for no reason. Like, it makes sense in the context of the story why she's a girl, but the story is already terrible so whatever. A better plot would have written an interesting villain instead of gender swapping the character and giving a half assed emotional arc to her.
Captain America: Winter Soldier is a better Black Widow movie than this. I'm so disappointed in this movie. I wish there was a good, female-lead superhero film, but maybe there never will be. At least I can always go back to Atomic Blonde.
