Exorcism movies are comedies...
13 April 2023
... the grimacing, the contorted movements, speaking in tongues and the screaming - almost as if the possessed person is a toddler throwing a tanrum. Don't take them seriously and you'll have a fun time watching!

This is also the case with The Pope's Exorcist, with one exception: There are little bits that are actually meant to be funny, which is a nice change and works quite well with Russell Crowe's character.

None of the characters are annoying, I didn't notice any choices that are too stupid (as usually found in horror movies) and the actors did a good job, especially the possessed character's. The special effects range from just okay (mouth and tower) to pretty decent (ending). The story is nothing too special or different from all the other exorcism movies out there.

All in all it's an average but entertaining (and not very scary if you are a horror veteran) movie that I would usually give a 5 out of 10 but since that type of rating usually means "horrible" here on IMDB, I'll give it a 7/10 and would most likely watch a sequel (or show) that the ending looks like it wants to set up.

Black Adam (2022)
8/10
Fun and nothing more
29 October 2022
First of all: I don't know the comics, so I don't know how many of the characters that look like they're ripping off other famous anti-/superheroes are actually doing exactly that (or not).

Is "Black Adam" a good movie? From an objective point of view: No. The jokes are stupid, the story is just "meh", the acting is good enough (even though Dwayne Johnson plays himself, as usual), the CGI looks kind of cheap sometimes, the action is good (and there's lots of it) and there's quite a bit of slow motion.

Why am I still giving it 8 stars then? I would have given it 7.5 stars but I'll round up to 8 because it's exactly what I expected and exactly what the trailer promises: A silly, fun, cool-looking and really entertaining movie. Just like "Fast & Furious", "Transformers" and "Mission: Impossible", "Black Adam" is the type of movie you watch when you're bored and just want to be entertained without having to think about it too much and that's what it succeeds in (for me at least).

Will I watch the sequel? Yes, most likely, unless they choose to do a full "anti-hero turned hero" turn, which would take away most of the fun. I'd also definitely watch the original R-rated cut if they ever release it.

Worse than what the trailer wants to make you believe
17 September 2022
The trailer looks a bit cheesy (which isn't always a bad thing) and made me kind of excited for this one, unfortunately the actual movie is a lot worse:

There are only 3 (4 if you count a grassy area) "proper" sets that still look fake (opaque windows with lights behind them), the rest is done through green screens. Usually I don't mind green screen work but in "Jeepers Creepers: Reborn" the fake environments look incredibly bad and it's easily noticable that the characters aren't actually walking on real grass or closing real doors.

The special effects also look terrible, almost worse than in "Jeepers Creepers 1", which was released in 2001.

The script and story are just as bad, cheesy (not in a good way) and don't make sense in places. I can't and don't want to (fully) blame the actors because at least the main couple looked like they did the best with the script and direction they were given.

The only positive thing would the decent make-up and prosthetics used for the creeper if there wasn't real, human skin showing through, like in the "reborn" scene.

And yet there's more to criticize: Apparently the creeper isn't able to count, which you'd think was required for an eternal demon that returns every 23 years. This movie just leaves me wondering why he was "reborn" two years early (2001+23=2024, not 2022). I would have really prefered for the creators to take the two additional years to look for proper locations to film at and practice a bit of CGI work to make the movie look less like a low budget student money-grab and more like the sequel/reboot it wants to be but in this state I'm not sure how it even managed to get into theaters.

I've never left a movie theater early but the only thing that kept me in my seat with "Jeepers Creepers: Reborn" was the fact that I paid almost $10 for the ticket and there's currently no refund policy at my local cinema.

Unless you're into cheesy, bad B-movies, do yourself a favor and rather rewatch the first one.
