Real Steel (2011)
Okay for kids but could have been so much better!
I enjoyed the beginning of the movie but it quickly became cheesy and strangely familiar. Basically it's just Over the Top with robots!
What annoyed me the most was the way the kid behaved. He just lost his mom but never shows any sadness about it and he acts like a spoiled brat behaving way beyond his 11 years.
I also would have liked to see more depth when it comes to the robots. In some scenes it's suggested that they have a soul and that they're aware of themselves and the people around them but it never goes further than that which I think is a missed chance. It would have been very interesting if they would have, for instance, done something with free will or lack thereof when it comes to being sent off to fight and often "die" just to entertain humans.
Another thing that bothered me was that apparently the only things that we as human beings seem to have accomplished in the future is the creation of fighting robots, an extra window in trucks and see through screens on phones and computers.
I guess this is really a movie aimed for kids and I think they will probably enjoy it. But for me, as an adult, it really lacked and the only thing I liked was the way the robots looked. It could have been so much better!
The Smurfs (2011)
Disappointing but not as bad as expected
This movie is no Oscar material but it's not as bad as I expected it to be after reading some of the reviews.
Hank Azaria does pretty well as Gargamel and I loved seeing the Smurf village. The latter is what actually disappointed me in this movie because it's mainly set in our modern New York instead of in the world of the Smurfs so you barely get to see this wonderful place. The story only has a couple of Smurfs in it for the most part and I think that's such a pity! I especially missed Hefty, Jokey, Lazy, Painter, Vanity and Chef!
I honestly think that they should have just taken one or two episodes of the t.v cartoon series and made that into a movie. I would have liked that a lot more because it would have given us a much bigger view on the Smurf's world and it would have created a more original plot for the movie.
La véritable histoire du Chat Botté (2009)
Very disappointing
I was disappointed to find out that I didn't get to see Puss In Boots but I decided to give it a chance anyway because I love fairy tales. I was curious to see what the makers of this movie had done with the original story of Puss In Boots.
The characters look horrible and the music is awful. The princess annoyed me from the first moment when she started to sing and dance because she's not very good at either and I couldn't stop staring at her giant hips. The king sleeps all the time and might as well not have been there and the queen sounds like a drunken Roseanne Barr throughout the entire movie. The interaction between the villain and his helper was meant to be funny I guess in an Igor/evil doctor sort of way but it completely fails at it.
As for the story; that really disappointed me as well. I had hoped it would be more like the original fairytale. Why are there palm trees, a parrot and ostriches when the story is set in northern Europe? In the original fairytale the ogre is a giant who is a powerful sorcerer and the cat tricks him into changing himself into a mouse so he can eat him and free the people from its evil. I think it's an important part of the story which has completely disappeared in the movie.
Perhaps it works better in French but I highly doubt it.
Happily N'Ever After (2006)
Such a shame; it could have been a great movie!
Loved the animation, enjoyed the music and really like the whole idea behind the movie (what if fairy tales didn't follow their set storyline rules?) It just didn't come out a good as it could have.
Some of the characters are too flat and their stories aren't detailed enough so you never really feel attached to them. They're clearly aiming for a Shrek sort of theme but the humor is just not funny most of the time. Also, here and there it gets a little boring because things are being repeated again and again.
I gave it 6 out of 10 because it's certainly not a bad movie to watch with your kids, at home.
Mars Needs Moms (2011)
Not the best one I've seen
It's not the most brilliant movie I've ever seen but it's not the worst one either.
I enjoyed the animation except for the way Milo's face "feels". I'm not sure what it is, but I had the same thing while watching Polar Express: the kids don't really have childlike faces which makes it difficult for me to become attached to the characters.
I would have liked to see more humor in this movie. The only part that I thought was actually funny and sort of cute was in the end, when the bug-like pet (Tuka??) went "ew, ew" when walking on grass for the first time.
I don't think this movie is suitable for small kids because some parts are pretty creepy. For instance, when Gribble is captured by the Martians, he ends up in a public execution place in front of a fire squad where there are remains of the previous victims. Also, there's the message that when you're a good kid, Martians will come to take your mom away to do horrible things to her.
(Oh, and why do men become dumb, sloppy creatures and why aren't they capable of creating the same sort of "intelligent" society as the females did when left without the presence of the opposite sex? I'm all for girl power but this really bothered me.)
