Everything Everywhere All at Once (2022)
One of the most creative movies to come out in a while
In today's landscape of superheroes, reboots, generic action/adventure movies, this film stands a head above the rest for trying to do something different. It's incredibly absurd, wildly creative, hilarious, and emotional. Try seeing it in the movie theater at least once because I can assure you, it is an experience.
Turning Red (2022)
One of Pixar's worst films
Pixar often has a reputation of tugging at your heartstrings while delivering on emotional, intelligent storytelling, and lovable characters. This movie has none of that.
What is has are:
Annoying and one note characters that act like caricatures. Seriously, there's the tomboy, Asian stereotype, deadpan snarker, bully, tiger mom, etc.
A basic message of accepting who you are that they beat you over the head with.
A tired depiction of preteen girls as overly emotional and boy crazy. They tried to adapt the style of anime where characters act in an overexaggerated manner and it just comes of as really cringy.
This is the only Pixar movie I struggled to watch from start to end and would probably never watch again.
The Suicide Squad (2021)
Best comicbook movie to come out in a while
After being disappointed with recent comic book movies such as WW84 and Black Widow, this was a breath of fresh air. The cinematography was beautiful, the fight scenes were well choreographed, and the characters were likeable and easy to root for. The comedy is uneven though with some jokes falling flat and the pace slows down at times but overall, an amazing ride.
The Owl House: Eclipse Lake (2021)
Good episode but could've been better
After such an amazing episode with Knock, Knock, Knockin on Hooty's Door, this was just okay in comparison. It feels like we skipped an episode between this and the one before. When and how did Amity get her palisman? She's suddenly all chummy with the Owl gang now and even Gus and Willow know about her relationship status.
The B-plot was unnecessary and just highlights how sidelined Gus and Willow have become. Eda and King acted a bit out of character and honestly kinda dumb this episode. They were constantly putting their lives in danger by goofing off. I did enjoy the dynamic between Amity and Hunter. The animation was so fluid during that fight sequence.
Old (2021)
Terrible film with terrible performances from the cast
This has some of the worst acting that I have seen in a movie in recent times. Why is everyone so robotic? It doesn't help that the dialogue is terrible too. It's so stilted and unnatural that I laugh or cringe whenever someone opens their mouth. Not even the intrigue of what's happening to the children is enough to keep me engaged.
Rick and Morty: Gotron Jerrysis Rickvangelion (2021)
Another terrible and lazily written episode
I don't know how they managed to make these action-packed episodes so boring but they did. The anime parody was just pure cringe and seems to be written by someone who's never seen one in his life. It's mind-boggling how they thought bringing back the worst part of the sperm episode here was a good idea. I also can't believe that Dan Harmon was involved in this considering the mafia part completely fell flat. If you want to see it done better, just watch the Chicken fingers episode of Community.
Rick just seems off this season. He's so incompetent now that it's hard to believe that he's the smartest man in the universe who's always ten steps ahead of everyone else. I understand if they want to portray him as fallible but they didn't have to make him a complete idiot.
The Owl House: Knock, Knock, Knockin' on Hooty's Door (2021)
Best episode of the season so far
That seems like an exaggeration but I'm being serious when I say that. It's got everything you could ever ask for in the show. The story, comedy, romance, and character moments were all on point. They managed to fit 3 different storylines into one episode and not make it feel rushed. It also has some of the most gorgeous animation in the season to date.
Rick and Morty: Rick & Morty's Thanksploitation Spectacular (2021)
Another terrible episode in what's shaping up to be the worst season of the show
Somehow I think the writers just gave up this season. The 70-episode order made them complacent and the show is suffering as a result. It's going the way of long-standing animated shows like Family Guy, a bunch of lame jokes and random gags strung together by a flimsy plot.
