Born American (1986)
Born American- 80's B Classic
I first saw this in the late 80's with a friend of mine who rented the VHS (no DVD's back then!) We were smoking a lot of marijuana back then and I recall being shocked by the more memorable action scenes, especially the Pepsi bottle incident. I think I stood up when that happened.
How can you NOT rub the side of your face after watching that scene? ANd yes, the chess game scenes were creepy. The trio of two rough-house guys with the computer-geek friend seemed to work.
Also notable: Norris' Kung Fu moves while beating up Russian soldiers. That is one of the feel-good-to-be-American perts of the movie.
Anyway, I bought the DVD and watch it once a month.
I MADE my twin 10-year old girls watch it too.
Mysterious Island (1961)
Mysterious Island- Excellent Movie
After reading the other reviews I am sure you know the general story line.
My 12 year-old daughters think this movie is hilarious because of the cheezy, outdated special effects (Superdynamation!) They are growing up in the digital age, just like many of your kids. Many old-schoolers say today's movie special effects are "too real" and don't offer much to our imagination.
Let's face it...our imagination is far more powerful and influential (as kids and adults) than any special effect in a motion picture.
I used to have nightmares as a kid watching this movie in the 60's. Back then there were no VCR's, DVD's, cable TV, etc. Therefore when the Mystrious Island came on TV once a year (just like Wizard of Oz, etc) it was a big event. All us kids would lay with our blankets in front of the fireplace with Mom and Dad close by, and we would be terrified when the scary parts came on.
40 years later I bought this DVD off the internet, and that "little kid" inside me comes back to life when I watch it today.
Forget trying to teach your kids about Superdynamation...they don't care. Let them play their Xbox's or listen to their Ipod's. That's THEIR Superdynamation.
Watch and keep this movie for your middle-aged self and feel like a little kid again. It works for me every time.

"Very observant of you young man..." -Mr. Spillit
P.S. NOT listed in this movie's bloopers is that the forward sails on the pirate ship are DOWN when they are firing on the castaways. But when it's blown up and sinking (and eventually sunk) the sails are UP!
