The CGI is awful. Not a single good action sequence compared to the originals or even 1.0 or 2.0. The movie is overly long and drags HARD. We see the "redemption" of a character nobody has ever liked or cared about as the conclusion which had me face palming. Really 3.0 and 4.0 are their own breed. The terrible second half of the rebuild series. I knew that these movies were going to go to a dark place as soon as Mari in 2.0 entered the "beast" mode. I thought that was stupid at the time and didn't belong in Eva but oh boy 3.0 and 4.0 are basically that but on steroids and all the time. Really the second half of the rebuilds don't feel like EVA at all. But that's okay we still have the originals and the manga. This really is just like the Disney Star Wars movies just forget about them and enjoy the originals.
All of that being said I didn't really care for the message which boiled down to "move on/grow up and get a girlfriend". As someone who has never been a shut in depressed Otaku like Anno his message falls flat. Yeah sure that's good advice to someone like him but it has no depth compared to his original message in NGE which was "how you feel isn't permanent you can change for the better and form better relationships with those around you". To me thats a much better message that can apply to anyone. Overall the Anno of the 90s and his works in EVA are above the modern Anno and if he wanted to disrespect his works of the 90s he should've ranted about them in interviews and tweets instead of making 3.0 and 4.0 to throw mud on his own legacy and having us wait years and years for the displeasure.
To end on a positive note Sagisu knocked it out of the park with the soundtrack as he always does when in comes to EVA. It's a shame his standout orchestral track wasted on one of the most uncanny scene, a scene that directly tries to copy End of Evangelion's Third Impact scene but falls flat on every level and reminds us how the 90s did it better.
