Three Thousand Years of Longing (2022)
A mixed bag
Pros- visually beautiful, very clever effects, some fantastic mini-stories with one. Ofcourse fantastic actors.
Cons - this is basically about a single women who has made it in her career and feels independent, being made to realise she is 'nothing without a man.' A line that stood out for me is when the wonderful Tilda says, "I want nothing, my life is complete." To which the jinn replies "are you a wife? A mother? A widow?" Hmmm.
Then ultimately she's happy to take the scraps from a jinn, who we're not sure really exists, visiting her now and again. This might be OK if it didn't make ger look so sad and lost until he appears again out of the mist now and again, as she smiles sweetly. Interesting, Tilda has played so many female characters I usually admire. But this is just my humble view and ofcourse always pleased to hear if someone disagrees with me.
Our Ladies (2019)
Very unrealistic
I went to see this after falling in love with Derry Girls. While watching the film, something felt very wrong as this was exactly my era and I had a similar background. I said to my friend, it's almost as if its how a man likes to imagine girls to be, heavily stereotyped under the heading Catholic. The script did not ring true on so many levels and really missed an opportunity to explore the vulnerabilities of girls growing up in this setting, and I was right, it's a male author and director. For me Derry Girls is so successful because the characters are loveable and all very different. The girls in this film were very shallow, samey and unintelligent. I may be wrong but when 'girls like this' were getting up to 'trouble' , good old Catholic shame would barely let anyone talk about it and that was the major issue and why there were so many teen pregnancies. Please give us more films with depth and a social conscience when exploring such important topics, Derry Girls did this so brilliantly and with such great humour.
