Russkies (1987)
homophobic much?
So, the message that Russians are people just like Americans gives some substance to this film. Clearly, this was intended for a cold war audience, but the theme can obviously still apply today. However, the constant fear of homosexuals makes these boys quite the hypocrites. Whether the boys are fighting or explaining American culture to the Russian, it is quite clear that gay is bad. When the boys fight, they refer to each other as homos. When the boys help dress the Russian, they repeatedly make gestures implying the bad outfits chosen are gay. Even when the Russian tries to give the boys a hug, they refuse on the grounds that it is gay.
It appears that the real message of this movie is: Don't hate the Russians, just hate the gays...
Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines (2003)
quite a surprise
With little hype and a bad promotional campaign, I expected a jank movie...boy, was I wrong. The special effects are amazing, the TX is 100% bad-ass and the fight scenes are drool-worthy. I even thought the story was well written (for an action movie). I consider this a worthy follow-up.
Vanilla Sky (2001)
It's been done
The movie had a strong start and certainly sets the viewer up for a surprise ending, however the ending seemed like a cheap way out. Can we say "Jacob's Ladder" or a multitude of other films that just do it better? It is nice to see a film try to break from convention, but different is not necessarily better. I have not seen the film to which this one is based off of, but I am sure it must have been descently good to result in a remake, however, I can think of far better things to do with 2.5 hours and $8.
Bottom Line: Wait to see it on HBO.
