Babel (2006)
a social science lesson
interesting movie, of course, specially because the several stories could be read as a little depressive comment about the difference between people of the First and Third World. When an American tourist was shot in a a Moroccan road, the story travels around the world and is a diplomatic and international incident: when the police kill the accidental killer's little brother, nothing happens. Same with the other story, about the Mexican nanny. The lesson is: when 'darker people' made a mistake they pay with their lives or their futures and nobody gives a damn. Specially if there are citizens of the richest countries affected.
Extraño (2003)
the other side of reality
Extranho is a strange movie, of course. But it is strange just because it does not follow the usual paths of Hollywood movies, and actually makes fun of them. The main character did not fall in love with the pregnant and abandoned girl he met, he did not become a loving father for her child, he did not tell us what happened in his past and he did not come back to work as a physician. I brief, he did not find illumination and tears and redention at the end of the movie. It is very interesting, because we are so used to these happy and moral endings that it is weird that a story has this level of truthness. I mean, usually men don't fall in love with pregnant girls, we become old without solve all the issues with our families and we don't tell to everybody things that really hurt us. Good one, really.
Innocence (2004)
a pretext
Innocence (2005) is one of the dark jokes that I've seen recently. Honestly, it did not impress me as a masterpiece. On the contrary, the movie seems a pederastic fantasy disguised as an 'art movie'. The vague and ambivalent story is just a pretext to show endless scenes of girls under 12 swimming almost naked in the river, running or dancing in very, very short white skirts or ballerina outfits, pulling up a leg and showing their white panties again and again and again... c'mon. Of course, children pornography is illegal, so the director and producers puts a lot of care in not showing us children completely naked or having sex with adults or between each other, but they moved just in the border line. The scenes at the so called 'theatre', where the girls dance for a hidden audience who pays for watch children in butterfly outfits and the clue about a man's glove that 'Bianca' founds later... don't need further explanation. Some people said here they have concerns about what kind of people would really, really enjoy this movie, and anybody not completely blind could see the answer. Don't take your little girls to watch this movie, they could think later that is very normal and 'arty' that a director put them in white clothes, wet them and take shots of their underwear.
