Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham... (2001)
Brilliant cast and acts, Admirable storyline
A mixture of Glamour and Moral is the perfect recipe for this shake of Bollywood. An absolutely entertaining and lovable movie. The story line analyzes morality in different dimensions. It's beyond my words to express the quality of the story, all I can say is that this movie is a must see. The cast are picked perfectly. Kajol, Hirthik Roshan, Shahrukh Khan, Kareena Kapoor, Jaya Bhaduri and Amitabh Bachchan perform flawlessly. A colorful stream of talents. Every single song is pleasurable. This is a genre where Bollywood is the best at, a musical love story enriched by bringing to picture the power of values and staying away from nonsense fighting scenes. Kajol performs her best ever. Matched with Kajol's best performance, Shahrukh Khan brings another legendary act. Hirthik Roshan's talent is depicted so vividly, he is a super star, undeniable. The mesmerizing Amitabh Bachchan is empowered by the company of Jaya, and spunky Kareena Kapoor is a perfect match for Roshan in this movie.
The Last Samurai (2003)
Women not pieces of meat!
I really enjoyed the fact that a recent big Hollywood hit finally had some substance to convey without putting women down. Good for you Tom, your movie showed when the substance is strong enough there is no need to get assistance from obscenity. This movie depicts the romance and the elegance of women in the most poetic way. In this age, when women's role and involvements in the society are equal or greater than men, I do feel sorry for famed actresses who had to drop their pants to get where they are. We need to support more movies like this which shows the grace and dignity of the women. I think the time is overdue for women to voice their opinion in regards to Hollywood making billions of $$ in the cost of women's dignity and in the cost of promoting "da.." and stupidity and etc.
House of Sand and Fog (2003)
could have they done better?
Sir Ben Kingsley does an absolutely great job in this movie and there is no question about that. I do salute Mr. Kingsley. However the question is that "would it be more appropriate to cast an Iranian actor to perform the act of Mr. Behrani?" Among a long list of talented Iranian actors who live in United States, one very distinguished is Mr. Behrouz Vossoughi. Mr. Vossoughi's talent and his acting genius is well known to all Iranian and those who have seen his work. To examine versatile talent of Mr. Vossoughi please see:(Dash Akol, The Deer aka gavaznha, Gheysar, Sooteh delan). I would proudly equate Mr. Vossoughi's talent to Mr. Paul Newman's. What surprises me is that when a movie like this comes along, Hollywood does not take advantage of Mr. Vossoughi's genius? Why? Perhaps Hollywood has not learned from its prejudice and the consequent failures...Do we remember how Hollywood treated Bruce Lee! that was Hollywood's biggest tragedy.
Baran (2001)
Rich in heart
How rich can a poor fellow be? How generous can a broke person be? How integrity can complete the emptiness of a lonely heart? How vivid the difference between lust and love can be? At this age of cinema, when the light of morality is being covered with the shroud of hollywood products, BARAN (meaning rain in Farsi) conveys a nourishing picture giving hope to the humanity. At this age of cinema, when the lack of tangible stories forces hollywood to rescue its empire with special effects and obscene enticements, here comes another third world country master piece of art.
The Luzhin Defence (2000)
Simply a masterpiece. LOVE as it has never been depicted before.
Simply a masterpiece. A combination of a great story and excellent performances makes this movie a memorable piece of art. A true picture of "LOVE", depicts this powerful word as how faithful and painful it could get. Enjoy the amazing scenery while the meaning of LOVE is being unfolded in this masterpiece.
