Rome on HBO max, must watch!
18 February 2023
Loved everything about this series.

The three dimensional view of life in ancient Rome across different classes is incredibly enriching my view of life in that particular area.

I'm not a history buf but every major event that is portrayed in this series seems to be quite accurate.

Add to that the compelling and often treacherous social relationships between families, friends and soldiers, and I can't find any reason for people interested in ancient Roman life not to watch the incredible piece of art. Atia of the Jullii and lucius vorenus are my favourites 😍.

The production quality is great, it feels like you're really there. So don't read other reviews, just watch the damn good shoe show!

Beautiful spaceship romance with predictable plot
30 December 2022
Saw it on netflix yesterday. This is my take:

Pros:
  • scifi effects are very good
  • ship is beautifully designed
  • space looks authentic
  • actors are believable characters and do a great
job
  • as a scifi lover this is something you can watch with non scifi lovers as the plot is about fighting loneliness, building relationships, and trust.

Cons:
  • storyline is very predictable and a bit dull
  • It takes quite a long time before something is "at stake"

7/10.

As my review has to be 600 words, i guess i need to fill it with this sentence although im a big fan of to the point bullitpoints over longwinded blablabla reviews.

The Woke Matrix?
5 April 2022
Warning: Spoilers
If you're a ninetees and zeros sci-fi fan, you're probably having a tough time. In the past decade, Hollywood woke up and started to realise a lot of bad stuff in our society - our very own matrix - needed fixing. Unfortunately, they are not able to produce any decent sci-fi movie anymore.

So women are stronger than men, LGBTQ and classic minority groups get the lead roles and white men need to be ridiculed. To which I say, no problem. As long as the story is convincing and the characters are memorable. The problem is that, imo, they are not.

In this movie, I only (somewhat) cared about Neo, Trinity and Niobi as these characters are already established in the previous movies. I'm sorry to say that I can't reproduce any of the new character names 2h after seeing the movie. A (non?)binary 18 year old person is apparently the captain of a ship, but I just don't believe it for a second. Again, some of the greatest sci-fi captains are female (Janeway) or African American (Sisco), and I loved them. Not this one.

The original Matrix storyline depicts a dystopian future in which humanity is unknowingly trapped inside a simulated reality, the Matrix, which intelligent machines have created to distract humans while using their bodies as an energy source. Morpheus helps Neo to escape this virtual world and - over time - Neo becomes more powerful and eventually is able to defeat the Matrix with the help of Trinity and other memorable characters. Easy to follow, understand and enjoy.

This movie shows that after "minds" were freed from the Matrix, the machine cities went to war over power shortages - but this is only shown in a 1 minute clip without any depth. Humans are allied to some sentient machines, which is understandable as some programs helped Neo in the previous movies, but there is no clip showing how this alliance was actually formed. Apparently, many minds did not choose to be unplugged and are still used as a main power source. Again, why this happened or why people choose to remain is unclear to me. Neo is plugged into the matrix and is again Thomas Anderson, Trinity is Tiffany. Apparently, this was done to give the psychiatrist (can't remember his name) more power to control the Matrix, but to what end? Neo and Trinity need to be "freed" but it's unclear to me why. Mankind established a new city called IO in which machines and freed minds live together in peace and make fruit.. there's no real urgency to start a new war as IO is not directly under siege or threatened by. Machines. Nevertheless, Neo and Trinity need to be freed so... They can love eachother? And Trinity needs to be able to fly instead of Neo because...me too?

For a 45 year old (and yes, male and white) sci-fi fan, these are very confusing times...

Please stop calling this madness startrek
20 March 2022
If you're determined to keep on writing about a distopian future, don't call it startrek. What a terrible parallel totalitarian universe that will probably be dragged out this whole season. Are we really seeing Picard as a nazi-like general, omg.

Great series if you're not a fanboy and like drama.
18 March 2022
If you're not a fanboy, biased, and just looking for an exciting series about how formula 1 operates, definitely watch it. If you're a Max, Lewis or anyone elses fan, you may but like what you hear. If you're a "down to earth" guy who already watches F1 intensely and don't like the drama, then this show is not for you. Personally.... I love it. Binch watched every season. I think the series is far more exciting than the actual sport. Well done :p.

Warning: Spoilers

Star Trek Orville meets Star Wars
9 October 2021
Yes, this episode is Star Wars, not Star Trek. Yes, some Trekkies born without much irony in them will be mad as they will point out the obvious flaws in basic physics and the lack of explanation. Yes, there is a lot of rehashing older timeline and alternate universe episodes as the guys writing the Orville wrote a lot of the earlier episodes too. And yes, I loved every second of it. Crossing my fingers for season 3,4,5.... In Dutch there's an expression: beter goed gejat dan slecht bedacht. Look it up if you want. Clear skies!

Binge watching Season 2
7 October 2021
Yes, this is TNG with comedy. Yes, I've seen this before. Yes, I'm loving every second of it. Yes, I wish the new Star Trek series had a similar positive outlook on what the human race could evolve into. Yes, I understand Star Trek new series Picard and Discovery were looking for a new vibe... But... The Orville copy of TNG is to good... And the new Star Trek storylines completely lost the positive outlook, and, frankly, the storylines suck. So, thank you Seth MacFarlane, Brannon Braga, David Goodman and all involved for saving the original Star Trek world of Gene Roddenberry. I'm so grateful!
