Fargo (2014)
I wanted so much to like this...
I loved the movie and wanted so much to like this, but I struggled to get through episode 1. The characters were all barely two dimensional, and the entire episode was a lazy softball pitch to show Nygaard as a hapless sad sack. He is beset by a motivationless bully who acts 16 in his 40s and his relentlessly venomous wife whose only purpose in life is to be Nygaard's trigger. I love all of these actors and they all do a great job with what they're given. Thornton, Freeman, Odenkirk, Hanks - even the lesser knowns... but the script is such "and then and then" crap storytelling punctuated with cartoonishly stereotypical regionslisms. Ugh. I just can't do it.
Jim Gaffigan: The Pale Tourist (2020)
Love Gaffigan - couldn't make it through the Spanish set
This was strange. The Canadian set seemed to point out interesting, fun inconsistencies in Canadian culture in Gaffigan's usual good natured way. The Spanish set was... insulting is too strong a word. I guess it just felt like an unpolished early set. The laughter sounded like a laugh track - every response at the same medium intensity. Zero resonance. The Canadian set would have medium and high laughs as the audience related to the silliness. The Spanish audience sat there as he went through every Spanish dish he could think of and quietly scoffed at it in a Garrison Keillor whisper. So odd..
