Mythica: The Necromancer (2015)
letdown to previous titles
First-off I wanted to give a warning. The ratings suddenly exploded over night with 500 new 10 star ratings and the rating jumped from 6 to 9 stars. Seems a bit suspicious if you ask me.
That said, this film is like a filler episode in the Mythica story. Nothing much happens to progress the story. A bit cool dialogue and a new character keep it somewhat interesting. The fighting scenes and the new quest are far inferior though to the previous film - and this, plus the filler story, is why I didn't enjoy it as much.
If you want to continue following the Mythica universe, you should still watch it, but lower your expectations and don't expect as good a film as the previous one! I think it's justified to call this a filler episode - keep this in mind and you are good to go.
Vorstadtkrokodile (2009)
Beautiful and moving modern version!
I didn't know what to expect of the filmatisation of the well-known German novel Vorstadtkrokodile. What I actually can remember is that when I read this novel as a child, I back then thought of, it would be great as a movie. So when I saw this movie is in the cinemas, I had to watch it. And I'm very glad to have done so! First of all the cast is great! Axel Stein does a really great job and also Semmelrogge is very funny in his short scene. I didn't know any of the youngsters, but all of them played their part very well - you instantly buy their roles the way they play them! And then there is the modernization of the context. Enormeausly well-done! Many nice gags, where I laughed out loud! This is a movie for everyone: the youngsters, young adults (like me, I'm in the middle of my twenties) and the elder generation! I hope you have read the novel, but if you haven't, I'm sure you are eager to do, after you watched this fantastic movie.
Heck! I even caught myself gladly smiling at the very end!
Sapiches (1982)
definitely the worst of the series
To begin with, it's important to say that you can't expect the same in this film compared to the first three. This time it can't be categorized as a teen-sex/drama, but only as a teen-comedy. And a comedy it is, but be warned, you won't need your brain for it. Sadly, this episode is very far from the realistic plot the first three episodes had. This time around you can't identify with any of the three boys and sadly for the first time you won't see the cute and a little stubborn Martha around... also it lacks for the old funny episodes in Benjis home with his parents. Furthermore the twist between the two friends Benji and Johnny is gone. I really missed it that they didn't get in a fight about how to handle the girls this time.
It still has some funny scenes, but my heart is not moved at all like after watching the first three episodes.
Yotzim Kavua (1979)
the twist begins - it's thunder and lightning!
again we meet the three boys Benji, Huey and Momo, only this time six years older. It took me only some minutes to figure out, it's nearly the same story, but not totally, as the first one's.
When you have seen the first one (needles to say, it's a must, otherwise you won't understand this one), then you will recognize some scenes. The first three running gags of the lemon Popsicle saga are born - you can't miss them! Very surprising was that I recognized some scenes that I've seen in newer movies, never knowing, they were originally from the lemon Popsicle. Thus, making this movie a classic worth watching! It is a very good prequel, and at least as good as the first one, if not better. Needless to say, this doesn't happen often.
As for the characters: they are six years older and this is making a big impression on the viewer of how they act in their roles. Not more can all their actions be described as mere childish missing experience. This time the characters' acting is making such an great impression that you will start to like/dislike some characters more and other less.
The huge confrontation built by the core difference between two of the main characters is beginning to become thunder and lightning... making you wanna know the progress in the following episode.
A classic - watch it!
Eskimo Limon (1978)
beautiful movie - totally stunned!!!
Since my early teenage years the title of this movie was in my, and of course in everyone of my friends', ears. First to say, I always wanted to watch this film but never had the guts to do so back then. Haven forgotten the title as years passed, I'm now 23 years old and just watched it for the first time - and I have to say, I'm totally stunned! The story line is very down to earth and pure realistic; I would guess about 90% of everyone watching this movie has had some of the same experience in his early teenage years. So don't get it wrong: this isn't comedy or a sex-film at all; it's pure drama - and when you know this in forehand, you will get, what you are searching for. I've read many reviews about people comparing this movie to American Pie and other modern teenage-movies. You shouldn't do that. This film is very far above the ones named and totally in another category - you cannot compare such two extremely different movies with another! As for the acting: even though for some scenes, you normally should dislike some of the characters, you will love them anyway. Reason is that you know what happens is so realistic, you could have been any of the characters yourself. And this is what makes the movie worth 10 stars! Open your memory-box and take a time-warp back to when you were 15 (in case you were 15 in the early '90s or earlier).
Atakku no. 1 (1969)
this series is a superstar!
I watched it for the first time when I was about 8 years old. I didn't remember it in the beginning but found it out by looking for the release date in Germany. And yeah, in Germany the series is called "Mila Superstar" and the main character called Mila. Today I'm 23 years old and very interested in japan animes. Recently I found "Mila Superstar" and must say I'm totally chilled by watching it again. Somehow I must say, I hate that in Germany it's labeled and produced as a production for kids. It really is far more than that (that must be the reason some episodes are banned in Germany). I will by the dvds and watch the Japanese versions.
What makes the story about the main character so special are the details about her social life and it's evolution. Needles to say the main characters charme is one more reason to watch the series.
Memoirs of a Geisha (2005)
Free your mind and win a bright new sight of view...
First to say: If you don't have the slightest idea what a geisha is or don't have a bit knowledge about or interest in Japanese culture, then this movie definitely isn't for you - there is a chance that you will become bored.
I wrote the above, because this movie isn't only about the destiny of a young child/woman, neither is it (as misunderstood from many western reviewers) a critic of being a geisha or of the Japanese culture whatsoever. If you know this in forehand, you might as well understand, why the characters are acting, how they are acting and that the young geisha's destiny not is a total misery or demise.
Try to free your mind and set it free of the western preunderstanding... and eventually you will meet this movie with a bright new sight of view. And that's, what the movie could be about? Enjoy
Cheonsamong (2001)
Dream of a... a.. oh, I did fall asleep!
I and my brother are very big Asian movie fans, so when finding this movie hidden in a shop, I bought this one on DVD, because it sounded very promising and I couldn't wait to watch it. So I watched this movie with my brother and I must say, in the beginning it was very promising. Both of us really loved this brutal ball scene in the first scene. But i guess that was all. There are some interesting fights, but it is not a action movie, as it claims to be. Instead it's a love movie... with the cliché of love so extremely played over the top, even Shakespeare would vomit on this title. Sorry for my language. By the way: The characters act like being picked up from the street and given 100 for playing in this movie.
Well, I and my brother watched it to the end, because we thought, it can only become better. But, heck, it never did. This movie challenged place #1 on my and my brothers "worst movies ever seen"-list, only followed by "Fantasy mission force" - do not watch this either.
In the Name of the King: A Dungeon Siege Tale (2007)
for dungeon siege fans a MUST, for mediocre-fantasy fans recommended
I decided to watch this movie even though, I first read all the negative user comments on this title. And now, after I have seen it, I'm more than glad that I have done so. As for the character selection, I have to agree with most of the other reviewers. Jason Statham is the best choice, the producers could have done. He plays his role, like he is born to Farmer! Also to have chosen Burt Reynolds as the king was a very good choice. He plays his role lovable. The only distracting thing was Ray Liotta, who plays his role very awful and the costumes of the kurg, which had something missing over it.
I, as a very big Dungeon Siege fan, must say that the movie totally lived up to my hopes. Many elements are similar to the original Dungeon Siege world, but sadly there are also some mad differences. But if you know that in forehand (and you should, because it's a typical Hollywood movie), you will enjoy an entertaining time. I can't agree with other reviewers that the movie takes all too long to watch. For me the movie was over like in an instant, so exiting was it! This movie is definitely on my "one day, I will watch this movie again, because it's so great"-list.
Now I'm very much hoping Uwe Boll will produce Dungeon Siege 2 and places the storyline exactly on the Dungeon Siege 2 computer game - that would be my movie wish of the year!
Superhero Movie (2008)
In between profane and masterpiece!
This movie is very funny, when you like light humor. But be warned, there may be some scenes that you may dislike. I, myself, hated three scenes, where the humor really was to extreme for me to accept. But, well, Leslie Nielsen is really in super condition this time. Only to have seen his scenes makes the movie totally worth it! He is acting so great, I can't forget the laughs I had.
The ideas, the creators had, how to set up a superhero parody is simply astonishing! The characters are very lovable and you will like them at once. If this movie wouldn't have the comedy scenes in it, I would have considered it the superhero movie of the year.
But, again, be warned: This really isn't a movie everyone will like. The scenes vary enormeausly from very profane humor to brilliant masterpiece comedy. In these enormeasly profane scenes, I just couldn't figure out, if they did happen, because they switched producers, where high or what else was going on in the producers' brains - if someone knows, please tell me!
Shu shan zheng zhuan (2001)
20 years later Sammo finally earns his reputation for this movie!
yeah right. Sammo Hung already acted in the main role in 1983's "Zu Warrios from the Magic Mountain". Now, 2001, he does it again with "Zu Warriors". But this time, he finally does it right. You seldom see him in wuxia, more often in classic eastern or crime slapstick. But this role simply does fit him! The ancient Chinese legend about zu mountain is not often represented in movies (as far as I know about movies translated for the west). Although, the legend contains a vast of interesting stories and possibilities. Straight said: you haven't seen a story alike yet in a modern movie! And that makes it so great! And wow: all the colors plus the enormously deep, right-into-the-heart going story makes you fall for this movie in an instant. The first time I watched it, I had to watch it again instantly, and I did. OK true, I didn't understand all of it the first time. But that makes it only better! You know, you didn't understand all of it, because there is so much spice in it! Therefor it is a pleasure for one self to watch it over and over again. And yeah, it grows deeper in your heart, the more often you watch it.
Summary: A story to love, characters you cry with, and truly: a movie you never forget! -- Editors note: well, I think I must watch it right now again :D
Suk saan: San suk saan gim hap (1983)
Interesting. But that's all!
Well, I must say, I first watched "Zu Warriors" from 2001 over and over again (about 12 times) with my brother, and we both totally love it. After that movie i got interested in the Chinese legend about zu mountain. Therefore I rented this movie, also because it is recommended in many a review. First to say, the story has many details about the Zu legend, which are important. But only that doesn't make it a good movie. I'm afraid, if I hadn't watched "Zu Warriors" first, I wouldn't have understood one inch of this movie and would be totally confused and bored after 3 minutes. Many a scene in this movie simply is so boring and unimportant, it could have been cut out or replaced (also to say, the never "Zu Warriors" from 2001 nearly tells the same story only backwards compared to this). The so-called special-effects in this high-budget Honk-Kong wuxia are honestly said the worst I've seen for a long time in a high-rated a-movie. Also It's still the early '80s, they could have done a lot better with the given budget.
Summary: Only if you are hardcore wuxia fan AND are interested in the legend about ancient china zu mountains!
Yôjinbô (1961)
Masterpiece! All time worth it staying home alone on a Saturday!
Well. This was my first Kurosawa film by now... but will definitely not be my last one! Let me first say this: Instead of going into town, I decided to stay home alone and watch this movie. And now afterwards I must say: It was totally worth it! The camera in this movie turns very slowly and the screens stay focus on pictures for a long time, also the movie actually lasts two hours - but altogether comes down in a flash, as so it only were 10 minutes. Do not get bothered about that this is a black/white movie, this actually gives it the right flare and impression. This movie does not need colors, or let me put it this way: the black and white colors simply fit to the storyline. Well, the storyline: Classic and awesome. The good old lonely, silent, mystified hero against the whole world. Characters really are deep and all of them their own kind, as you haven't seen them in another movie of this kind yet.
10 Stars from me!
