She-Hulk: Attorney at Law: Whose Show Is This? (2022)
It is very difficult to take this show seriously.
I was expecting a serious drama about a woman faced with unusual challenges, such as Peter Parker faces as a teenager in New York.
But I have to say, this show is a joke! It refuses to take itself seriously, so why should we? I feel like unless you have a sense of humor you won't like this AT ALL.
That is difficult considering that the Marvel Universe is supposed to be dealing with important social issues and universe threatening calamities narrowly averted only due to extreme powers of our heroes who we worship and respect as if they were real!
In this final episode, they break through the fourth wall entirely and show us what could be a a hilarious insight into the making of shows like this. I expect some folks who are in the right state of mind might absolutely love this show and this episode in particular, but frankly those are not serious people.
I think this should should only be watch by folks who enjoy life, don't take themselves too seriously, and are here with an open mind and a willingness to laugh!
And as you can see, that is not us! Otherwise, we would not come back to this page each week after watching a show we hate merely to echo how "bad" and not serious it is. And rest assured, if someone insists on renewing this show for a second season, we promise to come back and joylessly watch every minute and continue to document just how unserious it continues to be.
On the other hand, if that was it, then I seriously think they have made their point anyway and for anyone who can swear that it didn't make them laugh, it never will!
Excelsior!
Lou (2022)
Pay close attention in the final minute / seconds of the movie, starting with Jax.
Pretty obvious, but somehow many of the most detailed reviews here appear to have missed what happened.
It ain't over till it's over!
Overall, it was better than many of the reviews here give credit for. And don't comment on the Iran parts if you weren't around for Iran-Contra and the Carter administration and prior. It was a different time then with the Shah.
As someone who was, it all feels quite plausible, assuming Lou is somehow very virtually impervious. Ok, those parts require a reasonable suspension of disbelief. But that's no different than many male-led action movies, so let it go. :) Personally, I know older people are far more capable than younger folks might imagine.
Sharks vs. Dolphins: Blood Battle (2020)
Complete waste of time
They try and fail to record anything. Unless you enjoy watching these guys struggle and get no results, don't bother. Why this was packaged into a show is beyond me. Very repetitive and try to build suspense but no payoff.
The Book of Boba Fett: Chapter 1: Stranger in a Strange Land (2021)
Very bold idea-starting the series with a "filler" episode!
I gave The Mandalorian a 10 but sadly so far this series is at best a 5.
To be fair, I watched chapter 1 over 3 sittings because it was so boring I literally couldn't keep my focus on it. Riveting it was not.
Hopefully, this is just a filler episode between the Boba Fett episode in The Mandalorian and something good happening in chapter 2.
Otherwise, I'm worried this could just be a "filler" series between The Mandalorian and Obi-Wan Kenobi.
The jury is still out, but the questions being asked are troubling...
Foundation: The Missing Piece (2021)
It was the best of reviews; it was the worst of shows.
How telling is it that I now look forward to reading the online reviews of this pathetic excuse for a Rv show than in watching the show itself? Frankly, I wade through the show and try not to throw things at my expensive flatscreen just so I can read the increasing creative master-class level deconstruction of everything that is wrong with this show.
The one thing that would help would be to split these reviews into two categories.
1. People who genuinely love classic Science Fiction and are truly offended to their soils by this bastardization of a classic childhood favorite. People like me who had been waiting their whole lifetime for an adaptation of these books, singed up for Apple+ expressly for this purpose, and are absolutely crushed by this abomination.
2. People who are friends, relatives, paid by, aliases for, or otherwise beholden the the writers or unfortunate stakeholders of this show. I put all or most of the 9's and 10's into this category. In fact, many are duplicates or near duplicates of each other.
Apple really missed out a a change to win over loyal fans to their service. I hope whatever revenue they got in the short run makes up for what it will cost them in the future. People won't forget what happens here...
I'm putting "no spoilers" because by now anyone who's seen more than the first episode already has had their expectations set to rock bottom and this critic certainly won't surprise anyone.
Foundation: Death and the Maiden (2021)
Nothing but filler-no redeeming value. What a shame!
Other than introducing more pseudo-religious mumbo-jumbo out of thin air and and testing our ability to stay awake, pretty much nothing happened in this episode.
Oh, a bunch more foundation residents were slaughtered for no reason and a bit more misguided back-story revealed-Hari asked to be stabbed for reasons to be disclosed later.
The biggest flaw is the overriding theme of the episode that it is the actions of one key individual that makes all the difference, not crowd psychology.
Basically now 180 degrees contradicting the premise of the original Foundation series-at least pre-Second Foundation.
At one point I thought the Foundation was wiped out, based on the number of killings of helpless citizens of Terminus. Indeed, it mostly looks that way until they cut to huge crowd scenes later on. Continuity please?
This show went from the great promise and potential of the first episode-which I admit I gave a 10-to now becoming a big fat joke and an embarrassment. If this were on network TV it would have been replaced by a mediocre mid-season replacement by now and gone straight to video. But apparently that means Apple+?
I guess maybe Ted Lasso was a fluke. Either way, this show is a profound disappointment. From high expectations to a joke in 5 weeks. Amazing!
Foundation: Upon Awakening (2021)
Way off script now-I guess anything goes!
By using the same place names and character names they are trying to cash in on a known franchise.
Imagine if GoT had used the names and places from Lord Of The Rings. I think you agree it was better as GoT. But that's about how much this series has in common with the Foundation Series. I feel robbed and cheated, Apple!
Yes there was were mindless battle scenes and the reincarnation of Hari Seldon in the future, along with Gaal, in both flash-back and "time-travel" future version. Plenty more GoT-like executions to watch. Also a lot of slow scenes without much purpose.
But anything resembling science or even plausible science fiction is way out the door now.
Terminus in ruins. Untold unarmed scientists and children murdered. Salvor suddenly ineffective when it counts.
At least there was a total reprieve from those emperors for an episodes-that's worth an extra star!
Hey, watch it if you want. It's fairly mindless and entertaining at times. But call it something else. You would have got your share of viewers...
*Without seriously pissing off a ton of loyal Science Fiction fans.*
Apple: this show is why I finally signed up for Apple+! The first episode was very promising! And as a bonus I enjoyed binge-watching Ted Lasso a lot! But I guess now that Ted Lasso is wrapped up for the season it would be a good time to take a few months break from Apple+. Certainly this drivel is not worth $5/month.
Foundation: The Mathematician's Ghost (2021)
In the spirit of Ishtar, Gigli, or Heaven's Gate-though not nearly as good!
At least those classics had some campy comedic value.
I gave the first episode a10 and the second only a 5 but this one doesn't even deserve the time to write a review.
If there aren't recall elections for TV series, there should be. Cease and desist please!
Hey Apple, how about "Just kidding-we will cancel this garbage immediately, all pretend it never happened, and assuming we haven't been sued by Asimov's estate for malpractice and still own the rights we will try again next year."
Fire all the writers (in fact, "cancel" them) but you can keep all the special effects people and probably even reuse some of the visuals. Hopefully the courts order you to remake it and stick to at least the overall idea of each and every chapter of the 7 books.
So disappointed! I love these books! Asimov wasn't great at characters but was great at ideas and stories at stories.
Story matters! If you don't get that, turn it over to Disney and they will school you.
"This story is missing. Only the names remain to taunt the innocent fan."
If you think this review is rambling, pointless and misguided, well, then I made my point!
Foundation: Preparing to Live (2021)
At best a filler episode; at worst, a bad sign of things to come,
I gave the first episode a 10, but this one was mostly a set-back. "Preparing to Die" would have been a more apt title.
The pace is very slow without giving much relevant exposition. More Game of Thrones meets Dune than Foundation, as some have complained. At this pace, we are looking at season one covering only the first book. Fair enough.
My strongest complaint is that the robot (R Daneel?) doesn't even try to follow the Laws of Robotics--a mortal sin in the Asimov fandom and sure to displease all the people who liked the first episode. Asimov would be turning over in his grave. Very limiting for future developments too-if the series isn't cancelled first. And while robots may not necessarily have a fixed gender, making it blonde female was an obvious rip-off on the modern Battlestar Galactic and had no business here. Total fail on the robot! Robyn, how could you sign off on this?
Minor glitch: the base 27 reference should have but left out-doesn't really ring true for all the math people out there and it really confuses the point: are you saying save the inner worlds? Huh?
Then they start killing off characters very dramatically-I loved GoT but this isn't supposed to be that. I am hoping they can somehow return to the original plot of the books, but that is getting tricky.
Obviously I will tune in next week and hope things will be more interesting when we eventually get to Terminus, but worry from the foreshadowing that it will just become Lost in Space-which we've already seen, thanks.
One pet peeve with some other reviews: compare sure but don't say this show is derivative of Star Wars or Dune. It is quite the opposite having been written in the 1940's.
I don't mind them adding some modern social issues or improving on Asimov's character development-never his strength, and to be fair writing in the 1940's there were many topics you either couldn't foresee or couldn't publish. But also don't go so far afield that you ruin the story.
Let's see what happens with the cliffhanger before we decide if this is irreparable.
Foundation: The Emperor's Peace (2021)
First Episode is not a disappointment at all!!!
As someone who grew up reading these books and almost every fiction book by Isaac Asimov, I was worried that this had no chance of living up to his amazing craftsmanship and story telling. I was worried "Hollywood" would find a way to ruin it like they did for "I, Robot", example.
However so far they have stuck to the book pretty well and while making certain concessions to keeping the pace interesting for casual viewers and taking full advantage of modern special effects, it only makes it better than I dared hope.
If that is a spoiler, sorry, but that's all you'll get from me for now and if you've read the books, thankfully the only real spoiler available is that-at least so far--it is very, very good!
On to episode 2!
Agatha and the Midnight Murders (2020)
Interesting idea but not authentic Agatha.
Just as an example, when she at one point eat the end offers to wipe the blood off an "injured" man's face, the script has her say "Can I?" Instead of "May I?" An intelligent or well-raised 7yo wouldn't make this obvious grammatical error. Is the writer trying to suggest that one of the best and certainly most popular authors of the 20th century would have? Grammar was a much bigger deal back then! And no one else caught this? No way.
Loki: Journey Into Mystery (2021)
Whomever wrote this episode him done pretty good!
Almost a perfect episode, Tom!
Weirdly, though, if you rewatch this it also makes for a good drinking game:
1 shot whenever a character uses "whoever" or "whomever".
2 shots each time they use them incorrectly (backwards).
Hey, any excuse to rewatch this amazing episode!
(Watch responsibly)
Adventures in Rainbow Country (1969)
Not to be confused with "The Beachcombers"
Short-lived but good for its time.
The Beachcombers was the one set in B.C. and much more successful and enduring, staring the unforgettable Bruno Gerussi and Robert Clothier.
Easy to get these two shows confused, especially if you watched them as a child.
