great movie !!
10 March 2004
I saw this a second time after reading the Herman Wouk novel and liked it much more.

The acting, scenes are wonderful and adhere closely to the book.

My only comment is that Ali McGraw is too old for the Jewish girl she played. In addition, Victoria Tennant is really terrific. Difficult to see how anyone could ignore her after her charming appearances.

I wish this video(or DVD) could be lumped up together with those for 'War and Remembrance". That would be great !!

I am not sure how Mr Wouk got the information. Historical facts, imagination or inside information ? They all seem accurate and credible.

Don't miss it.

Make sure watching it several times.

Good enough for 1940
15 February 2004
This could be a film in color, a film made longer by stretching it into several episodes and sticking closer to the Jane Austen masterpiece. But it was 1940 and there were so many restrictions. None the less it was a great movie. I am very much stuck with the idea of comparing Greer Garson with the fabulous Jennifer Ehle in the 1995 TV episode. I can't decide which one is more to my liking; both were charming and lovely.

Daisy Miller (1974)
real meaning not conveyed
1 February 2004
This is a good movie, The acting and photography are both excellent. My understanding is that the aim of this story is to indicate the clash of cultures between the naive American and the pensive and suspicious European at the time around the First World War. This was later illustrated by the tragic failure of President Woodrow Wilson in his futile attempts to make the League of Nations work and to make the world safe for democracy. However, unless the viewer understands this background, he/she will never appreciate it just from watching this film. Perhaps this film should not be made at all

Very good !!

"The Hound of the Baskervilles' has always been my favourite Sherlock Holmes adventures. I have seen at least three movies (this one, one with Basil Rathbone as Holmes and one with Peter Cushing as the great detective) I must admit that this is the best. None of them were based exactly on the book. The only thing I can suggest is that since this is a TV series, it could be made a bit longer with more than one episode.

Kennedy (1983)
very good record of the Kennedy years
24 November 2003
I saw this on the 40th anniversary of the Kennedy assasination and found it very interesting and timely.

As I understand, this movie first came out in 1983, before the publication of the book 'The Dark Side of Camelot' by Hersh. I wonder if it would be different had it come out after this book.

very impressive !!

I must say that this version is much better than David Lean's 1965 movie.

Of course, it does not have the great musical theme and the excellent photography as the 1965 version. But it seems much more comprehensive and realistic. The actors and actressess all did very well.

I am very glad that Boris Pasternak has finally been posthumously reinstated and his son allowed to accept the Prize medal on his father's behalf at a ceremony in Stockholm in 1989.

The decline of communism, the breakup of the Soviet Union have all finally vindicated him. Thank God justice has been done !!

OK

I saw the 1959 movie "The Diary of Anne Frank" and have loved it ever since.

This one is in color and told a lot more about the Anne and her family before they went into hiding and after being found and sent to concentration camps. I don't know who recorded all these, Otto Frank, perhaps. It seems much more interesting to see Anne's life as recorded in her diary only.

I still like the 1959 movie better than this one.

Spectacular and penetrating !!
29 December 2002
I really love this show. It gives a very spectacular and penetrating look at the trials and tribulations of American families immediately before the Civil War. The only other movie that I know similar in nature to this is 'Gone with the Wind' but I venture to say that this is much better

Great !!

A very good and entertaining story. Great performances by Jenny Seagrove and Deborah Kerr.

I must, however, remain skeptical of how such things could take place in conservative Victorian Britain. After all, in more liberal U.S. the women's lib movement didn't come until the 1960s and 1970s

To Be the Best (1991– )
entertaining
2 September 2002
This, to me, is a very good TV movie showing the problems a career woman must face with family love, rivalry with members of a family-owned business. It may be very different from the book by Barbara Taylor Bradford but the producer and director have the right and option to change the contents and story so long as the TV movie is entertaining to the TV audience. It could be foolish and idiotic to keep comparing this program with the original book.

not too exciting
29 October 2001
I expected a great deal. After enjoying the TV programs 'Eleanor and Franklin' and 'Pride and Prejudice' I was hoping that this would be a blockbuster. The sceneries and costumes were great. So was the photography. But there was nothing exciting and stimulating and I just don't want to watch a second time.
