The Shining (1980)
9/10
The Shining is a creepy, zany, and overall great horror film from the 80's.
12 July 2008
Simply enough, "The Shining" exceeds everything that makes a good horror film. It is very cheesy, an abundance of memorable scenes throughout the film, great humor and it's scary! The film doesn't have a cast of great actors, but "Jack Nicholson" gives a very zany performance as Jack Torrence.

Is this Oscar material acting, production values, directing, etc.? No, I don't think it deserved any awards that great, nor does it deserve criticism or speculation that great, but it is a very enjoyable and memorable horror film that contributes heavily to pop culture and the horror genre.

The movie begins as the Torrence family moves to an isolated hotel, where the father soon becomes possessed by a former-guests ghost to kill his family. While his son Danny has visions from the past and future relating to the hotel. These visions are both creepily effective and some of the most memorable scenes in the movie.

The film is both a psychological thriller as much as it is a horror. I can't say this is one of Stanley Kubrick's best pieces of work, but it is still one hell of a horror film, even today. If you're a horror fan you probably haven't missed out on "The Shining", because it has been discussed, spoofed and referenced so much in pop culture for you not to have seen it, or at least heard about it. Whether you are or are not a horror fan, like cheesy movies that still have decent production values or just like horror movies, "The Shining" is definitely worth checking out.

Pulp Fiction (1994)
10/10
With all simplicity, arguably the best film ever made.
20 December 2007
I'll keep it short, but sweet.

Pulp Fiction will always remain a classic to me, abiding the rest of my days. It is perpetually entertaining in every aspect. To both film fans and general and fans of the very admirable crime-drama genre. Fans of crime-dramas will love the intricate plot, which is executed with both a brilliant screenplay, and enjoyable performances by the film's actors.

The direction and film-editing is very skillful throughout the film. As if the script, story and characters weren't absorbing enough, the film also has such exquisite production values as well. Which basically is the icing on the cake.

Anybody under 18, I believe should see this film, regardless of the content. It is a very intelligent film, that can easily trance you into the crime genre.

Without delivering to many plot details or spoilers to my fellow readers of this review. I will simply say, you must see the film and experience it's complex plot for yourself, and put the pieces together. It'll make for a much more enjoyable experience.

True Crime: New York City (2005 Video Game)
1/10
This game has fatal flaws, and can easily be best categorized under the worst games of 2005
20 December 2007
To summarize this in one minute... not a very good review, but I all I can do is hand out negatives, so give me a break.

After playing True Crime: NYC, there are dozens of things I can say about the game. First being, that you should not waste your money on this game, even if you're just renting it to fool around with a couple of friends and point out flaws.

This game has erratic frame rate, and is completely disabled by bugs. It also has horrible dialog, sound effects and graphics. Not only this, but the controls are faulty, and in-and-out of missions annoying phrases are said over and over again. The horrible acting job and the casting makes it more frustrating.

And beyond these flaws of many other flaws, the game has basically no replay value, and the core game play is plenty poor itself. You get no thrill from firing the weapons, driving the vehicles, or any elements of the core game play.

As for the soundtrack in the game... well, it's pretty rushed. There are a few decent songs in there, but it's mostly tacky rap music. Not only this, but another huge problem is not being able to listen to the soundtrack while in-game off the menu. I suppose this doesn't matter, since the music being enabled in the game play isn't going to fix the rushed game play or provide any interest.

When's the last time we had this kind of approach in a horror movie?
26 October 2007
Warning: Spoilers
30 Days Of Night is nearly two hours of sweat, swears and carnage. This film is also very dark, heavily plotted, and shocking. All these things I've described snap together to make 30 Days Of Night the best horror film of 2007, with the arguable exception of "Planet Terror".

We all know that in horror films, the violence is usually represented much more heavily and continuously, right? Well, in this film, it pretty much pushes that aspect to the limit, considering it is a comic book adaption. But this film, is so vicious, that you couldn't keep up with the death count even if you had a notepad and a pen on you.

The two actors, Ben Foster and Danny Huston, are surprisingly the leaders of the pack in this film. Even though they both aren't lead characters. Ben Foster, is an easily great actor, because he did pretty much everything his role asked him too. Danny Huston, is easily probably the best actor in the whole film, for his creepily effective performance as leader of the gang of vampires.

All together, without giving spoilers I can't describe to much about the plot that you wouldn't have already heard on IMDb. So all I can tell you is that this film is stocked full of thrills. Horror fans will adore it's no-barred grisly approach with how the violence plays through the film. Many, many graphic arterial sprays and other unimaginable and ruthless imagery you can only imagine in nightmares is placed on display throughout the film. If you're not a fan of horror, or are faint of heart, you will probably not enjoy this film to much, but if you are, you will go berserk. An energetic and brutal horror film.

An observant, realized Crime-Drama about hate and change
26 October 2007
Warning: Spoilers
American History X is a movie that details a graphic portrayal of a former Neo-Nazi, Derek Vinyard, who is sent to prison for 3 years for 2 murders. After experiencing certain unimaginable horrors of prison, he realizes he has to steer his younger brother, Daniel, from going down the wrong path. The events that follow what I have told you, are shocking, controversial, but not meant to direct any hate the characters express in this film, yet I don't think anybody who sees such shocking scenes as the Supermarket Riot, Prison Rape or even the ending, would want to have any affiliation with the horrible things portrayed in this movie.

This film, and it's characters, are very realized. Edward Norton plays a convincing role as Derek, in which he earned an Oscar Nod. The Director, Tony Kaye, makes the film stylized and different by using color as recent events, and B&W as past events. A little touch that art-house film fans will probably enjoy. This film might be pretty compelling to some, but for those who understand the well intended morality of it all, will be thrilled.

Films as recommendable as this, don't come along too often, but this film proves that independent films are still around today, and are just as enjoyable as other great dramas such as "Pulp Fiction", "The Usual Suspects" and more. With that said, this film is definitely one of the best films of the 90's, and without giving away anything too interesting in the film, I will end my review.

Transformers (2007)

Enjoyable Summer Experience for any action lovers!
24 October 2007
Warning: Spoilers
Every summer, the "Hollywood Cookie Cutter" always brings out one or two big popcorn flicks. This one happens to be directed by Michael Bay("Armageddon", "Pearl Harbor"). Now most people think they know what the direction of this review is going, but I'm afraid they're wrong. I thought this film was a fun, breezy, sci-fi adventure, with sharp wit, great direction, dazzling f/x, and a surprisingly effective script(which was written by Michael Bay too).

To give you information on why all the following events(which I won't give to much information or spoilers on), the story follows as so. There are two sides, good and evil. The Autobots(led by Optimus Prime), being the good, and the Decepticons(led by Megatron), being the bad. There is a talisman, called the Allspark, which gives basically immortality to whom ever has it. The Autobots had got it from the Decepticons, but Megatron went in search of it. Megatron landed in the icy waters of the arctic and was frozen... at least, until an explorer by the name of Captain Archibald Witwicky. A map of the location of the talisman was imprinted on the explorers glasses, in which Sam Witwicky, a high schooler related to the Captain, has in his possession. The Autobots are now aware of the glasses and their location, and they dedicate themselves to finding it. I will not give anymore information without spoiling it. This is pretty much the basic plot to the story. Although their is a lot more thrills throughout this engaging film.

I doubt this film is going to take home an Oscar or anything, and if it did, it would probably be for achievement in special-effects. Though I will say that this film is the best summer action blockbuster of 2007, without a doubt. With a reasonable cast, excellent script and Michael Bay's huge directing achievement, I predict this film could raise lot's of eyebrows. Another notable thing, is that this is an intense and action-packed update of the popular animated kids cartoon. I personally am not a huge fan of the cartoon show. Even though I've only saw one or two seasons, if not less.. So I'm not judging this film by a "fans" point of view. With that said, I'm sure not only by this, but in my mind, that anybody who likes a good action film every once in a while, will indeed enjoy this film.

The Exorcist (1973)
10/10
The Godfather of Horror.
4 July 2007
The Exorcist is simply a masterpiece. Great Cinematography darkens the atmosphere and a superb screenplay enhances the dialog. There is plenty of excellent actors in this film as well. Loads of great performances from actors such as: Linda Blair, Ellen Burstyn, Jason Miller, Max von Sydow. I pressure you to see the re-edited one. Trust me, it's not a remake. It's a better editing of sound and picture, and even some NEW footage that is of the same quality.

If you enjoy horror movies of any kind, and/or like a good drama, this film is for you. A Head-spinning performance from Linda Blair makes it even more horrific, seeing a little innocent child getting possessed by a horrid demon. Ellen Burstyn give another great performance, as a mother going through shock and worry about what is happening to her daughter. This acting is all together very powerful, realistic and leaves for a better cinematic experience overall.

Other great notable parts of the movie, are the satisfying amount of good dialog, quotes, and scenes. Gut-wrenching horror conjoins with gritty drama in this absolutely awe-inspiring movie. See it for yourself if you haven't yet, you must; because it is definitely a memorable film.

From Russia with Love (2005 Video Game)

Bond at the top of his game.
16 June 2007
Good: Engaging cinematic firefights, great presentation, vehicles are actually fun to drive, fairly appealing multiplayer, faithful to the movie, and the list goes on.

Bad: Main missions are a bit short.

This game defines what a "good" third person shooter(not necessarily a spy-game) is. Great firefights carry on the story and make you want to complete EVERY single mission through, and unlock all the genuine bonuses the game has to offer. The hype this game had, was lived up to, and I personally think you should buy it, and hook up with a couple of friends and play this one. Loads of fun.

The sound in this game, is a rip-roaring achievement from a few previous bond games, and firing a weapon, really feels like you're firing a weapon. It ties in with the aspect that you are a deadly and ruthless spy.

All in all, this game makes you excited and satisfied after you make it through, and some multiplayer that can compete with the standards of the crafty James Bond "Nightfire" game for gamecube.

Don't like Drama's? You do now!
14 April 2007
One night, I was on the couch, looking through my "TMN on demand" movie selections, movies A-Z. Looking for good movies to watch on the movie network is tough, considering you don't know what ones are good/recommended and what ones you should entirely stay away from. I watched all of the ones that fit my taste, and one night, I decided to view the movie "Twelve and Holding", hardly knowing anything about it. I'm not really a fan of dramas at all, the "Family Channel" Disney, pretty much ruined them for me, with these lame drama-comedy's such as MVP and cheap independent cartoon type ones. I decided to give it a chance, because I wasn't really in the mood for any action or horror or Comedy's like I usually was. As soon as it passed the dramatic scenes about a brother tragically loosing his life to a Molotov cocktail, I was absorbed into the fascinating character study and couldn't wait to see what happened next in the tale. Many characters with completely different problems are examined in this story, and it ties together nicely with the main plot. Inspiring and heartbreaking moments with truly remarkable well-acted sequences.

The actors often seemed way to real, to me, and instead of feeling like a total wordplay, the writing style was original and refreshing. There is a good amount of subplots in this coming-of-age story and they are studied with well-written dialog, awkward or funny moments and significant captivating motivational characters. This movie isn't nearly as highly acclaimed as I proposed it was going to be, only one nomination? No Oscar nominations? Nothing!? Surely it deserves more observation on a critical side. Consideration, understanding, the dealing of problems, and temptations are pretty much the four key aspects this movie is tackling and trying to make the viewer take into consideration, but people aren't giving it a fighting chance. Speaking of characters, five strong characters are highlighted in this film. Jeremy Renner, who plays Gus, a mislead need-no-sympathy pathetic man who tries to be a clean role model to a little girl, Zoe Weizenbaum who happens to be one of the other lead characters, playing Malee. Jesse Camacho playing Leonard, who has to deal with his overweight family, one of the more motivational and inspirational characters of the film. He is also overweight, but actually is the one who is trying to take action and loose weight. Conor Donovan, another powerful actor from the film, plays two characters, himself and his much more unapproachable and risk-taking brother. Two strong roles too fill, and he does the job. This film tops off with one of the most emotionally charged and satisfying endings I've seen in a drama since a long time.

Highly recommended.

The Simpsons: Lard of the Dance (1998)
Season 10, Episode 1
9/10
Wow, personal favorite, I don't care what people say!!
13 April 2007
Warning: Spoilers
I absolutely love this episode, it doesn't exploit Lisa in a bad way like people say, and we get to see a fully functional story and cast of characters lit up with great animation for the time being.

The plot launches introducing a new character "Alex Whitney" who completely steals the popularity left in Lisa by introducing hip and new style to the school, while Lisa tries to cope with these changes, Bart and Homer have joined the grease business to make money, with some hilarious consequences including a violent fight between grounds keeper Willy. Tensions flare when Lisa looses control over herself trying to find a date for a dance, when she doesn't, Principal Skinner assigns her to do the job of admissioning people into the dance. She finds out the news at the dance, that Alex's plans have gone totally wrong and everybody is repelling each other due to nervousness. The writers don't forget Homer and Bart, as they fall through the vent in the roof and come down to the dance floor followed by gallons of gooey grease. Lisa convinces Alex to live a little as a touching ending.

Overall, all the characters were in their pride, and all the jokes were top-notch. Well written by Jane O' Brien. That sums up my review.

I give this episode a 90% rating.

Attentive to the other films in terms of morals and beliefs.
12 April 2007
Warning: Spoilers
Preliminary to my review, I have to get some minor key point past me first, so if you will bare with me I'll explain them in as much detail as I can, without missing the point, although these unorthodox views may be a change to your ordinary review of this film, trust me, after you see this remarkable movie, you will agree.

George A Romero's vision and production of this film is often misunderstood for mindless violence and bad provision of what a horror film is. This is not only everything a horror film or thriller film is, but it slides the series further with duplicated violence and gore and action but supplements of additional morals and reasons. Explanations are often strong but reasonable and realistic. As graphic as a film could be, believe it or not. Sorry to jump on such a audacious topic of the movie, but I must increase the likeliness of this movie by rationalizing what people think realistic violence really is. The gore in this movie is as realistic as you can get it, nearly exact in fact. I'm surprised such a vicious film can be produced for production. Trust me, before you jump all over me and scatter me with filthy responses, believe me on this, I know a lot about this medical "mumbo jumbo". Anyways, I'm done nonsensically babbling about this, so on with the review.

"Day of the dead", is easily a throwback to the other premature films, but in a way more evolved. I don't mean this by the characters or the violence, little subjects like that surely don't generate any heavy effect on the film. I mean that it has revolutionized the previous in a way that will possibly become adored by fans or hated by fans, love it or you hate it, this film is as radical as all the others, but some people just can't outlast such changes, meaning they must have enjoyed the previous films for different reasons. Non-justified reasons to me.

To carry on with this review, the film launches around a futuristic world overrun by the brutal flesh eating zombies. A group of scientists and military men use an exceedingly old missile silo for refuge. The Military men's personality's begin to sprout as they soon go mad with fear and demand results. They take the scientists as hostages and threaten to go as far as even murder them if they don't achieve the difficult and unconditional goals they desire. Eventually it becomes not so much a war between zombies and humans, but a survival of the fittest. Of course, the old saying "Nice Guy's Finish Last" appeals in the film. You won't have to worry by this sweetened description I have transfered into your head. There is plenty of time for the brain munching stomach crunching zombie carnage later, all in good time.

The characters are hard to adjust to at first, I don't mean their attitudes, I mean their sleaze ball style quotes. They quickly become satisfactory characters eventually near about 40 minutes in the film. These character traits are easily enjoyable, as corny as they are, and fit the mood of the film perfectly. The atmosphere in this film is rather effective. Dark, moody, post-futuristic, these are all good words to describe it, but you have to see the film in order to witness the strong competence this film unleashes. For a 80's film, this is a memorable one. The first time you see this movie you may be disoriented by the direction the film is taking, but I guarantee you will appreciate it if you give it a chance.

What is with the negative reviews and remarks I have heard all over this site contradicting how great this film is. They have to really settle in and give it a good study, to really endure the greatness. Overall, too sum up this review, although this film is nothing absolutely revolutionary to the other films, it still tried something new and succeeded in the best ways imaginable. Creative and unpredictable, a work of art. Glad I took the time.

Saw (2004)

Thin Plotting, Heavy Execution.
12 April 2007
Warning: Spoilers
To start off, I'm not too joyous about the streaming abrogating responses this film has received. So it's not the best horror film of the year, big deal. Personally I'd say this film differs from many other Hollywood blockbuster big budget or low budget horror flicks out there. It's a grueling and disgusting film in the eyes of the average viewer, but to some one else, you can see how these petty criminals portrayed in the film cleverly and affectingly pull together a wicked trap or two. The sadistic torture in the film is straight to the core and doesn't resist. This is very charming, in a lurid way.

The pacing in the film immediately picks up, as we get to know two of the main characters in the film. Not a whole load of character study here, more explanations and reasons, this makes way for the weak plot that needs some comeuppance. Many plots have been done in this cosmopolitan way, but not many knew where to go from here. This film doesn't just feature irritating scenes of brutal torture, tacky characters and forced on writing, instead they tried something different with the formula they are strained to bond with. To give simple yet justified examples of how realistic and original the forms of torture are in this film, I don't mean how gory they are. I mean how powerful and intriguing they are. Some mysterious and some you catch on too easily. For example, one man, gets his energy in a sickening way, pretending to shoot a person with a gun, so he can hear her heart beat. Sounds a little basic, but when you think about it, all serial killers need is to hear your screams, and that gives them enough pulse.

You may retract at some of the violent scenes you'll experience throughout the coarse of this film, but it'll pass. Nothing to gruesome. You'll notice, most of the characters are very energetic, and come to life on the big screen. This is produced not only by the dignified roles, but surprisingly by the actors too. Nothing is exploited for more than it is in this film, everything is too the highest quality and purity. I guarantee it's very suspenseful and will shock and befuddle you at times, with enough pulse pounding axiomatic thrills to satisfy.

Overall, originality and regenerated execution is key here.

I think some people missed the point.... (CONTAINING MILD SPOILERS)
23 March 2007
Warning: Spoilers
This movie is suppose to be gritty, it's suppose to be disgusting, it's suppose to be demented, it's suppose to have a big cast of crazy zany characters, this is what Rob Zombie is aiming for. This is one of the movies you have to give a chance, sure it's not for everyone, but just sit through the whole thing even if it disgusts you, it's still worth seeing if you're into this form of a slasher film or not, and if you aren't, then that's fine, but I'm just saying you should have the right to judge it the way you want if you watch it first, but if not, then you don't know which directions this movie could take.

I found this movie thoroughly good, Rob Zombie brings no mercy to the slasher genre as this throwback to the 70's gory cheesy horror flicks we came to love grosses out audiences and flops at the box office. I don't think Rob Zombie is one of those film-makers who cares about the money, or the fame, I don't think he could ever expect that from such a misunderstood violent chiller.

I'll get on with the review now. It starts off as we get to know a disturbing argumentative firefly family, on the run from a Sheriff, hunting them down with no mercy, after they kill the Sheriff's brother in a firefight. Three of the family members, Captain Spaulding, the nutty domestically disturbing clown, Babe, the immature(psychopathic twisted) killer who'd rather watch the telly then help Otis's plans, Otis, the uptight one who started it all. We see little family moments here and there, although I wouldn't call them family moments because they are merely just cuss-filled arguments that seem to get annoying near the end of the film.

As The Pacing in the film picks up, we get all the character depth over with and get serious, as they are REALLY on the run from the sheriff now, and they go on rampaging killing spree's, seemingly passing the time, while enjoying it every step of the way. I don't want to give anymore spoilers now, so see for yourself.

All in all, not anything revolutionary to the slasher genre, but not much different then an average slasher film, but it is nonetheless entirely overrated. Check this film out.
