Dandelion (2004)
Pitiful
The images of the Idaho plains and sky made the film. The story line was slightly pathetic and irritating. The main character Mason has very little self worth, he goes to jail for a crime he didn't commit twice and eventually kills himself. His mother Layla is even more pitiful, chasing down her dinner with vodka during every meal Eddie constantly protects his brother Arlee even though he is violent and mentally abusive towards him. Danny drowns herself because her mom won't let her sustain a relationship. None of the characters ever stand up for themselves. Basically the characters either die or continue living their miserable lives. Still the film retains an ethereal quality like every sad story does.
Julien Donkey-Boy (1999)
Interesting
Not a mainstream film for sure, but if you liked other Harmony Korine films you would probably like it. It was filmed under the rules of Dogme 95 or something like that and so a hand-held camera was used the entire film. I didn't like that much, I would have rather it been filmed like a regular movie, it could have been so much more than it was if some of the monotonous sequences were cut out. At sometimes it is awfully slow moving, but despite that an interesting depiction is made. There is no particular meaning to the film, which I think is fine, but some prefer a plot line of some sort. The actor that played Julien was brilliant and there were actually some really comedic parts in the film. Of course there were darker parts, but they were brilliant as well.
Reservoir Dogs (1992)
Overrated
I was very excited to see this movie on the IFC listings because I had been aware of all the praise it had received for sometime. This movie is very well written and has a somewhat interesting plot.Steve Buscemi was excellent as well as the other actors, but with all the hype over the film I was expecting something more. I found it quite overrated. All the praise over this movie is misleading. It is also a matter of taste to whether you would like it or not. If you enjoy films about organized crime that lack no violence then it is a classic. If you are more into movies like Office Space or Garden State you might hate this film. Personally I think it is a quality film, but it has a deceptive hype.
No Telling (1991)
No Point
This movie was very mundane for the most part and the theme of the cruelty of animal experimentation didn't make sense, if it was suppose to. It did make me aware of how disturbing those experiments can be and it is true that a lot of small farm towns are being technologically corrupted, but I think it had some propaganda towards the issue. Vegetarians probably wrote it. Usually household dogs aren't captured for grotesque medical experiments. The character Jeffrey was just some weirdo, hence the horror genre of the film. I don't think lab rats would have evoked the same emotion as a cute dog. I think it is a cheap shot to the audience when a dog is hurt. If it was attempted to portray animal testing cruelty it was poorly done or perhaps it was just trying to achieve shock value.
