Beacon 23 (2023)
Started out good, got boring.
Initially I was really drawn into the series, in the first 3 episodes, then it kind of just started jumping all over the place and introducing characters haphazardly. It's not hard to follow, just feels pointless and a lot of the characters introduced later seem to just come out of nowhere and it's hard to care about them at all. They don't add to the story at all, just seems like they didn't have much of story so they just kept adding people and dialogue, but it doesn't move the story along or make it interesting. At least not in a satisfying or interesting way. I have not read the books so I'm only going on what is in the show. By episode 8 I just felt like I had been waiting for something to finally happen or for the rocks to be explained. Kind of reminded me of the TV series Lost, a lot of nothing going on for unexplained reasons and in the end you really just want it to be over.
The Royal Hotel (2023)
About nothing.
It's a film about nothing. There's a lot of tension in the film that seems like it's leading up to something, but nothing happens. It just goes no where. The film does well at making you think something really bad is going to happen and that they'll be some revenge or escape, but nope. Nothing. It's basically a bunch of people (men mostly) drinking and acting like jerks and being menacing. I guess the message of the film is don't hang out around drunk people who act like morons.
I really wish the film had gone somewhere. As the acting and directing was good, but there's no story in the end to hang it all on. What a waste. I give the acting and directing each a 9. But the story just tanks it. The story is a 1. Don't waste your time.
Wonder Woman 1984 (2020)
Enjoyable
I almost didn't watch it because of the bad reviews. I'm glad I decided to risk it. There is a bit of what other reviews are talking about in regards to preachiness in at least one scene, but it wasn't over the top or the main focal point of the movie by any means. The film made sense from beginning to end. I thought the villains were atypical and interesting, because of it. I'm giving it a 10 because I think the really poor reviews are wrong. I'd rank it about a 7 for a super hero movie, it's not better or worse than any of other similar movies out there. The flying scene is kind of stupid and for some reason it goes on forever. Otherwise a solid film. Acting was good, script was good. Fun to watch.
The Super Mario Bros. Movie (2023)
For little kids
Loved playing Super Mario Bros. Growing up and I'm a fan of illumination so I was looking forward to this movie. Sadly I was greatly disappointed by this movie. There's really no story, it's not very funny and it's definitely not worth watching for anyone older than ten. All that said I can see why this would be entertaining for little kids. Plenty of cute characters and bright colors. It moves along at a quick pace from scene to scene. I'm not sure why adults are giving this such great reviews it was really very boring and tedious to sit through. I can honestly say not worth sitting through even once.
Shelter (2023)
Eh
You'd be better off watching the TV series Leverage. This is similar, but they take themselves way to seriously and it makes it a bit cringe worthy. The acting is also a tad worse in my opinion, because of this. It's cheesy without being funny.
Also for supposed expert thieves they aren't very good at what they do. The fight are pretty painful to watch. Not sure if this was a made for TV movie, but it feels like one.
All that said, if you like heist movies this is okay to watch if you're doing something else, like making dinner or playing a board game. It certainly doesn't need your full attention.
Watcher (2022)
Boring
Very very slow. No real twists. I decided to watch this because I read a review that compared it to Hitchcock's thriller/suspense movies, but it is far far from that. Both my wife and I thought it was an incredibly dull. The tension that they tried to build in the film never really happens till about he last five minutes of the movie and at that point neither of us really cared anymore. Not sure how this has the rating it does. Honestly it's about two stars. The acting is fine and the cinematography is good, but the films just not interesting nor are the characters. It also felt fairly predictable throughout. I strongly recommend not wasting your time.
Anatomy of a Scandal (2022)
Goes nowhere. Pointless
Don't waste your time. Could have had some good twists or something interesting happen but it doesn't. The "twist" is easy to figure out, my wife spotted it by the second episode. Actors are good, but whoever wrote this should be fired.
Moonfall (2022)
Fun is what it is...
It's an over the top apocalyptic disaster movie. If you like movies like 2012, Armageddon, The Day After Tomorrow, The Core, San Andreas, etc. Then you'll love this movie. It's completely silly, unrealistic, over the top and fun. If you're looking for great cinema this isn't it, it's just fun. I gave it a ten to balance out the reviews, but in reality it's about 6.5 in the genre of big disaster movies.
