Everything Everywhere All at Once (2022)
A Cinematic Trip For The Mind And Soul
Upon seeing the trailer for Everything Everywhere All At Once, I sensed this film was something truly different. I have to say I wasn't disappointed in the slightest.
I won't say much about it other than it was much deeper and moving than I expected. It'll leave you dizzy and teary eyed, and I mean that in the best way possible.
Even though it's packed with action and lots of laughs (verbal and visual), this film demands your attention. So save the popcorn, Skittles and soda for the next Marvel schlock-fest, and buckle up, because you're in for one hell of a ride.
10 out of 10.
Summer of Soul (...Or, When the Revolution Could Not Be Televised) (2021)
"Summer Of Sam" had more soul...
I'm a music person, period. So I'll admit to having slightly elevated expectations for Summer Of Soul. To say I was incredibly disappointed is an understatement.
The positives: The subject matter is truly interesting, and I imagine the musical performances are phenomenal. I say I imagine because the entire film is beat down with constant voice overs and interviews. And I mean constant to the point of frustration. Most of the interviews and commentary are of little relevance at best. And that's too bad considering the mountain of talent that was documented back in the summer of '69.
At about an hour into Summer Of Soul I was so bored I got up and walked away from it. I did end up finishing it. I don't understand all the rave reviews. Did I get the Dollar Store version? To echo another review, I too began to count how many seconds into a performance before it would be ruined by whatever useless commentary.
I really hope another filmmaker takes a turn covering this because Summer Of Soul has no soul. And that's a damn shame. Spend your time on something more worthwhile. 3/10 only for the subject matter.
Dear Rider (2021)
Tried and True Formula With Heart
Jake Burton of Burton Snowboards fame is the subject of Dear Rider. I found the film to be informative and engaging. Not just a bio of Jake, but a solid primer on the evolution of modern snowboarding. A documentary with some great visuals and lots of heart. 8/10.
