Knock Off not Knock Knock
1 May 2017
This is a remake of the 1977 movie "Death Game" starring Colleen Camp and Sondra Locke. Ironically the producers of Knock Knock gave Coleen Camp a small role in this movie.

It pretty much is like Death Game, but not as good. I suggest you watch Death Game for yourself to make that decision.

Bloody Good Movie
20 April 2017
This was a tense, interesting and gripping police/government movie. Although I do not speak Portuguese, it came across to me that the acting was great. I enjoyed the plot, the characters and its intensity. It was better than its predecessor, Elite Squad. And that is usually not the case.

I have only one issue and that is why I gave it a 9 - the dubbing and subtitles. The Elite Squad gave a dubbing option on video but Elite Squad: The Enemy Within did not if you were watching it on video. Also like many subtitled movies WHY IN THE HEAVENS DO THEY USE WHITE CAPTIONS. Half the time you can not read what they are saying. Why not use yellow or red? This blows me away so many times.

A good movie to watch but bloody and very gripping. I wish there was an Elite Squad 3

Downe for the Counte

My god, this is the worst movie I have attempted to watch in yonks. No acting, no plot, just grossness and sheer stupidity. Enough spent on this review but I need to write five lines for a review.

You are better spending your time trying to resuscitate a dead earthworm than watching this movie(???)

Out on a Limb for End of a Gun
12 April 2017
Actually I would give this a 5.5.

Obviously one needs to separate his older movies to screen vs direct to media as is his MO for some years.

This particular movie, has some good comments and insights from the main character which raises the rating. It is not over indulgent in violence, and has minimal sex. It is just plain entertaining.

If you just want to enjoy a movie and relax without being hyper-critical, End of a Gun is a good movie to watch.

I sure wish he would lose some weight and get a better hairpiece. It appears he and Travolta go to the same wig shop.

Road to Nowhere
4 September 2015
This movie was absolutely deplorable. Sure no sex or swearing but it paled in comparison to the original Road Warrior and Mad Max. Where was the dog and Gyro Man when you really needed them? The acting, if you can call it acting, was limited to 10 word utterances. Hardy was god-awful with his Aussie accent if you can call it that. In fact the accent changed towards the end of the flick. His role was sidekick to Theron.

This is not the Max Rockatansky we know from previous Mad Max films. It was really a Charlize Theron movie with Max as second fiddle to draw an audience. Charlize Theron and some of the action sequences were the only redeeming features to this movie.

But while it was loaded with action so much of the film was speeded up to supposedly heighten the action which it did not. The plot was so thin as well.

All in all a total waste of time of true Mad Max affectionados. You will be so disappointed if you waste your time watching it. I want those two hours of my life back!!!

Wonderful but Sad Documentary
23 August 2015
Warning: Spoilers
I know that most animal documentaries are also sad but this one got to me towards the end with Ma di Tau and her precious little daughter. I still think about the face of the little cub.

This documentary is fantastic. Great scenery and puts you in the predicament of our lions. I highly recommend watching it.

One thing really got to me. It was a review by MANOHLA DARGIS of the NY times. Did this women watch the movie or just have an agenda?

She says "Within the first 20 minutes of "The Last Lions" one adult lion dies in a ferocious on-screen fight .." Then in the next paragraph she says "First, her old man splits..."

Well, if Manohla actually watched the movie rather than looking at it she should have known that the adult lion who died was her mate fighting for her and the cubs to protect their territory. He did not split. He fought and gave up his life for the family. That is a helluva difference Manohla.

And Ma di Tau and her cubs did not "lose their home in a fire." They were forced out by the new pride that came in and took over their territory. The fire was an impediment to their escape. Geez woman get the facts right.

And you are a film critic????

Not a Bad NZ Series
11 August 2015
I enjoyed the first season of Brokenwood. No, it does not have big name actors, a big budget, heavy sex and swearing but it keeps your interest and is entertaining.

If you want all the hype, hoopla and jabberwocky of US based shows this is not for you.

I agree that some of the acting in the first episode was below par but it picked up in future episodes.

Some of it is hokey and there is also quite a bit of subtle humour from DI Mike Shepherd which can easily pass by the viewer. No, he is not suave, sophisticated and debonair but I like the character.

The episodes are up and down so you must be a patient viewer. In season 1 I enjoyed 2 of the 4 episodes. The first and last episodes in my opinion were below par.

I also liked the quirky country music in the background. It is a bit different from the norm.

I watched it on DVD so I could use the captions to help understand some of the kiwi accent (eg the "chicks" in the mail).

Try it out and see if you like the show. Don't try to compare it to some of the pommie shows just take it on its own merits.

POSTSCRIPT I am now into the third season of this series and each season is better than its predecessor. I have now upped my rating of the show to a 8.25 from a 7. The only real criticism I have about season 3 is the new background music they used. It is not as good as the music in the first two seasons.

A Hit in My Books
25 July 2015
I did not have great expectations for this movie and I found myself immersed in watching it.

When I first started watching it, I thought it was another HBO boxing documentary but my feelings changed quickly in the first five minutes.

It does not just give you boxing but includes a very nice introspective on Manny the person from when he was growing up until his new perspective on life itself. Most people do not realize all the activities this man is associated with and the movie enables you to get a better perspective on the Pacman.

I really enjoyed it.

A hit in my books!

This Movie Should Never Have Gone Off The Launching Pad
6 April 2015
This movie was a supreme letdown.

It was overly long with dragged out scenes.

That it had some good actors is about the only redeeming aspect to it. Matthew McConaughey was superb as always but the movie wasted his talents. Mackenzie Foy as young Murph also was great. It had a good cast of essentially walkons which helped the movie.

Interstellar should have been cut down by at least 30 minutes.

The photography was brilliant but it was overloaded with special effects, and superfluous scenes reigned supreme in this flick.

A total waste of time.

Interstellar was more uninterestedstellar to me.

One of the Best of 2014
6 April 2015
This and The Grand Budapest Hotel, I believe, were two of the best movies of 2014. Ironically both films were scored by the same composer. Kudos to him.

The acting and screen writing to this movie was impeccable. Great, great, great is all I can say about those aspects of the film.

All the actors were superb especially Benedict Cumberbatch who I believe should have won the Academy Award for his performance. I am looking forward to the next season of Sherlock.

I also enjoyed the acting and roles played by Mark Strong and Charles Dance. I first came across Dance in The Jewel in the Crown and thought he would go far but alas such was not the case.. As to Mark Strong, what can you say? He is one of the best actors around.

The only let down related to Keira Knightley - her over the top accent and that ugly, repulsive hair colour. Why on earth did they give her that shade of hair colour for the movie? It was distracting to me.

This movie is great. By all means see it. You will not be let down.

This Movie Gets the Bird
23 February 2015
My god, what a piece of junk Hollywood foisted on the general public with this movie. After watching the first 25 minutes of it I realized that I had wasted 30 minutes of my life.

The movie should have been titled "The Bird" because it was so awful. Overacting, poor script, and unrealistic dialogue all fitted into the formula for this flick. It was Hollywood's overindulgence to itself.

I am glad Michael Keaton got a chance to star in a movie but his acting was so over the top. And the same applied to Edward Norton, who is a normally a very fine actor.

I am sure a better movie could have be written about an actor who wanted to transition from Comicbook Hero to a dramatic actor. But this movie falls so flat on its face it needs nose surgery.

Could Go on a Diet
1 February 2015
I concur with many of you that this movie was way to long, slow and anticlimactic.

Pictorially it was beautiful but there was so much lost potential with this film that was left omitted.

It contained lots of chatter and religious doctrine about turning your cheek, etc from a church at that time was about as ruthless as royalty in feudal times.

It started out with great expectation but ended with sad disappointment.

I had thoroughly enjoyed Mads Mikkelsen in the Pusher, and his role as Michael Kohlhaas was great.

In the end the director needed to tighten the film belt by a few notches to have made this movie a good movie.

A Popsicle Movie

A Popsicle Movie

By that I mean it really sucked! This is a movie that makes Plan 9 From Outer Space look like an Academy Award Nominee.

The acting is abominable. It would have been more exciting to have them with the script in their hands while acting out the movie.

Everything about it stunk:

  • The photography and settings are beyond belief. I have never seen anything so bad before.

  • The costumes look like they were purchased from Goodwill with some of it actually looking like polyester and not reflecting the clothes of that time

My recommendation is to go Green with this movie --- Save electricity and do not watch it!!

A Wave of Disappointment
26 March 2014
This TV series was horrible disappointment for a number of reasons.

1- 5 hours of watching the same incessant thing over and over with no resolution to ANY issue. I never expected that. 2- A septic actress with a lousy British accent and a drip of a personality. She couldn't act her way out of a paper bag and was as boring as a snail in my backyard 3- continued, unnecessary bad shots from overhead for arts sake. 4- too frequent scene changes that are short and abrupt

I enjoyed the backdrop of Belfast and the fact it did not deal with IRA type issues. It was refreshing in this sense. They should have focused a bit more on corruption within the police rather than just the serial killer.

Jamie Dornan is great as the serial killer.

I certainly will not "FALL" into the trap of watching series 2.

80 Yr Old Pair of Underwear
1 March 2014
I liked the first Thor but this one was a total failure.

The plot to this movie is as thin as an 80 Yr Old Pair of Underwear that has been worn by a homeless dude for the past quarter century.

I mean thin. The beginning was difficult to understand. I even attempted to use closed captioning to get the drift of the beginning.

The only redeeming features of the movie were Loki and the two sub-characters who worked for Jane Foster.

It sounded like Chris Hemsworth just graduated from Woolloomooloo Grammar given his thick Aussie accent (which was not as pronounced in the first movie).

Stuck in a Public Toilet
1 March 2014
My god this was a horrible flick.

It mainly consisted of beautiful filming, heavy breathing, and a dumb as a sponge character.

Dr Stone keeps on blithering "I am running out of oxygen" but she just babbles, fidgets and keeps babbling instead of just relaxing and breathing slowly as an astronaut would be trained to do

This character was a joke. She could not get out of a public toilet cubicle if she locked herself in it.

The only redeeming character was Matt Kowalski but then there were really only two characters in the movie.

I should have just watched Vanishing Point again.
