Night School (1981)
Atmospheric well made cult thriller slasher.
Leonard Mann and Rachel Ward star in this beautifully paced 1980s slasher. Beautiful night school students are systematically slaughtered. The serial killer is a homicidal maniac wearing a motorcycle helmet and the various unwary victims are decapitated and killed in mysterious ways. Excellent dialogue, acting, direction and cleverly written taut plot. Leonard Mann an Italian superstar originally Leonardo Manzella plays the Police detective who is hot on the trail of the elusive, sadistic killer. Leonard Mann was prolific and very popular in Europe and USA with numerous high quality cult spaghetti westerns and Giallos. Among Leonard Mann's best work is "Ciak Mull the man of revenge" 1969 and "Pistolero dell'Ave Maria" 1968. This wonderful, memorable horror thriller Night School 1981 is recommended.
Double Indemnity (1973)
Superior 1970s remake far outshines the 1944 original.
ATMOSPHERIC THRILLER directed by Jack Smight exceeds the 1944 original. Richard Crenna mantains his reputation as a major 60s/70s leading actor teamed with the excellent Samantha Eggar in this vastly superior remake of the 1944 "classic film noir" that had an inferior team of Fred McMurray and Barbara Stanwyck. Being a well made, tightly budgeted Television movie this 1973 thriller is beautifully written, plotted and acted, giving full value for money in each scene. Richard Crenna is totally head and shoulders above the fumbling and uncertain Fred McMurray and Samantha Eggar adds real style, glamour and sexiness in her role. Absolutely recommended in all departments this is yet another TV Movie that is hugely well made and exceeds the efforts of a cinema release.
The Singer Not the Song (1961)
Beautifully crafted moody western drama
Dirk Bogarde gives his career best moody, mean , atmospheric performance as a menacing , ambiguous , mysterious western town gunfighter Anacleto. The film is expertly written, produced directed and acted by a top notch cast that includes British stalwart John Mills as a confused priest who befriends a leather clad gunman Bogarde and the ravishing, exciting French starlet Mylene Demongeot as the love interest. The plot is intricate , meaningful , brooding and dramatically played against the Mexican background. Mutual respect and admiration is evident between Mills and Bogarde as they manage a tense and difficult stand off. Bogarde's mean bandit out to control a Mexican town is resisted by Mills. This film is recommended as Dirk Bogarde's best acting on film and also for superb direction from British director Roy Ward Baker who later went on to direct numerous masterpieces of cult Uk television and horror.
Project X (1968)
Classic 1960s sci fi adventure.
MASTERFUL performances from Christopher George (as always) and newcomer Greta Baldwin make this William Castle Sci-fi adventure truly exciting, innovative, classic space adventure with a deep message and meaning. Monte Markham adds another polished performance to his long list of superb acting film and TV credits. The film is way ahead of its time 1968 and deserved Oscar recognition. A truly well made, beautifully acted gem. Christopher George one of the greatest 60s/70s tough action leading men gives another epic, dedicated performance that put to shame other so called major stars. To correct some imbecile comments it is the presence and acting ability of stars like Christopher George, Audie Murphy and similar leading action men that make a film watchable and memorable.
