Catwoman: Hunted (2022)
Two Stars for Two-Dimensional, and a headshake.
DC Animated has always been something to look forward to for many of us in the past ten-or-so years. I was both surprised and eager to see when Catwoman:Hunted showed up for me and immediately sat down to watch it.
And boy, was it a disappointment.
Gillies makes Selina Kyle's incessant "Ohh-Aah-Mm~" tone a notch less irritating in this poorly written-and-directed animated disappointment that sets Batwoman in the wrong- and Catwoman in the wrong-EST of lights where the heroine is depicted as a try-too-hard and the title thief as the ever-boring over-sexualised stage prop.
I'll call it an experiment: What happens when you take the useless, sexually overactive female lead and forget to put the no less boring secret agent of superhero next to her for the action scenes.
The answer is this movie: Nothing good.
It beats me how this movie even made PG13 when it's full of unnecessary innuendos, homoerotic nonsense and forgettable voice acting latter of which is in no way the fault of the star cast. They are all top of the line: the writing and directing was just plain terrible.
A proper romantic thread between Bat and Cat wouldn't have gone too far. They'd have done so much better to be leaving the nonsensical bath scene out of it entirely, adding some sort of motive rather than a 30th minute of acting like an Easy Woman on Selina's part.
TLDR: Disappointing, no character development, 1960's level naive writing with unnecessary oversexed nonsense, not meeting the pg13 and offering nothing of worth or value.
Night of the Animated Dead (2021)
Just not good.
I understand that this is the remake of an old movie as animation so I'll start there. The animation is just below average. That pretty much says it all. There is nothing interesting or entertaining about it.
Someone probably liked the old movie and wanted to remake it to share it with the rest of the world in a new light but I wish they didn't.
And then about the movie.
The overall writing is sloppy.
- Plot holes: Half this stuff just makes no sense.
- Irrational behaviour: Who even ACTS like that?? ANY of it? Especially the women they are like puppets.
- The only one guy that does anything and makes any sense, okay, no, I won't spoil it, you get the idea anyway.
Maybe this was a good movie in its own time but the writing aged very poorly. There is nothing to it that would be worth watching. No character development, no moral struggles, no real conflict just "GET IN THE CELLAR. NO YOU'LL BE TRAPPED. NO GET IN THE CELLAR" for ten minutes straight.
I have kids in my class who'd write a better plot.
