No Country for Old Men (2007)
Overrated to say the least
I've learned to really not care about the IMDb ratings. But i have never been so shot down by a film with such a high rating.I decided to see this film because of all the hype.I admit i'm not a Cohen fan.I stopped enjoying their films from Fargo and on.But NCFOM is a perfect example of a bad movie. Hidden under a pseudo-philosophical veneer is a movie with practically nothing to offer. No serious plot,no serious characters (Tommy Lee Jones did his best but what more could he have done with this material?) and certainly nothing exciting about the way it was filmed.Just because some of the greatest filmmakers filmed their movies with a slow pace (i heard a lot about comparing Kubrick with the Cohens....are you guys serious?)it doesn't mean that if you film with a slow pace you'll make a good movie. All in all NCFOM became one more example of why the Oscars mean absolutely nothing.
The Attic (2007)
Certainly not as bad as i thought
The attic is certainly not the movie of the year or a movie to be remembered but certainly a movie that didn't make me think i wasted my time.A pretty decent haunted house story with some bad acting but a good movie pace.I'm sure with a bigger budget it would have become a horror flick that could satisfy the fans of the genre. It keeps the same eerie feeling from beginning to end and the main character's descent into madness left me quite satisfied. It is a movie based on atmosphere more than pop up scares which was nice for a change. It certainly could have been more scary or more gory but for it to get a 3,5 rating...you guys surely haven't watched really bad horror movies.
Pi (1998)
This could have been a masterpiece
When i first saw Pi i was sucked into the dark mood the the director sets up in such a great way. But something was bugging me.After the second time i understood that although it is a really good movie (considering direction lighting music etc) it has basically great flaws as to its core plot. The whole mathematics thing doesn't make sense at all,the number Pi has nothing to do with the "key" number max was looking for (thus making the movie's title just stupid) and the Kabbala numerology is completely flawed.Aronofsky showed great craftsmanship while directing this movie but the impression i get is that he had absolutely no idea about mathematics or mysticism and he didn't bother to do a little research before shooting the film.Too bad this impression gets worse with every viewing when you've stopped being shocked by the imagery and you notice the plot more. This could have been a masterpiece.
