American Song Contest (2022)
Not great
First the good.
There are of course actually great songs here. Oklahoma's is a huge example- while some people will say she will win only because she is a k-Pop artist, I strongly disagree. I believe Oklahoma's representative will win because of her amazing performance. Also, looking at everyone on Eurovision singing in English to win, it makes much more sense here than it does over there. Continuing on, this really shows how much of a cultural melting pot the US is. There's tons of different genres of songs here, while we also have each singer give some state info. That's interesting.
Now the bad.
We have, of all people, Kelly Clarkson. I like her music but the world does not need her to host another show. Also, there's way more songs I'd call "meh" or outright bad that in the official Eurovision. Plus, backing tracks, they're awful and are present in every song. It's obvious many of the singers are merely lip-syncing, or quite possibly the backing track is too loud and the producer team has a hell of a lot of work to do. Also, what the hell is the jury voting? They're putting bad songs above genuinely good songs, such as when for some reason Wisconsin's song only got 9th in the first jury vote.
I understand why Europe really doesn't want us to participate in the EVSC, but this is just making things worse. It's still fun to watch though.
Miraculous: Tales of Ladybug & Cat Noir (2015)
The sole worst show I have ever watched
Look. The concept is fine. If Thomas Astruc weren't so petty over "his vision" then maybe this series would be better than the absolute DUMPSTER FIRE it turned out to be.
First of all, Chloe. Chloe is based off a bully from the creator's childhood, and she ended up getting a redemption arc in Season 2. However, it was completely destroyed in the god-awful Season 3 finale. Her superhero identity as Queen Bee was ultimately replaced by Mary Sue. No, that's obviously not her actual name, but for the sake of not over complicating things we will refer to her as such.
According to Astruc, Chloe is "irredeemable". No. Chloe is NOT irredeemable. She was neglected by her mother; while that's not an excuse it's a reason, and if she could come so far in Season 2 alone she can continue to be redeemed. If you want an irredeemable psychopath, use Lila. Didn't she try to get Marinette expelled from school?
Let's also talk about Marinette...she's a horrible protagonist. Not only does she continue to abuse her powers for her own wants and never manages to obtain any consequences for them (unless in the final season her mess-up towards Lila in SEASON 1 comes back to haunt her). She hands out the magical jewels like candy, revealed her identity to someone already (and of all people, someone who's superhero identity was revealed t the helland was akumatized TWICE), and let's not forget her stalker behavior towards Adrien. Taking pictures of him, stealing his phone, tracking what he does...think about how people would react if this was Adrien doing this to Marinette. See what I mean?? Lila Clownsi is a better character than her, and that speaks volumes.
This show is like...let's say everyone shares my opinion of Olive Garden for a minute. You go in the restaurant as a guilty pleasure to eat Italian food, and you walk out with nothing but regret that you ever ate there. That's how I feel about this show. I wish I could tell myself from 2015 that the show would just go downhill from there, because it did. Thomas Astruc in general needs to stop acting like a child and take criticism, too.
The Music Freaks (2020)
Wasted potential
Honestly, it's ok to watch. But there are a lot of flaws in its writing that can't go unignored.
A lot of characters in the show aren't necessarily "characters" per se, as we barely know anything about them and their potential to be a stellar character is pretty much wasted. Luke is a prime example for this. He barely got any screen time from episodes 1-3, and then from episodes 4-5 he got an arc...but it wasn't about him. It was about Zander and his attraction to him. Within those two episodes he and Zander became an official couple, and then his screen time was flamed again. The only times he is EVER on screen are his admittedly bad flirting with his newfound boyfriend. That's literally it.
There are many other examples of this:
We don't know why Daisy has so many activities scheduled. We know she feels pressure to do this- but WHY?
We don't know where Zander's trust issues come from. It's reasonable how Zander didn't let him in but the second episode's title I said literally "Trust Issues" and there are multiple references made to the fact that they are in fact trust issues. So why does he have them?
We don't know ANYTHING about Sean. I meant what I said, and I said what I meant.
Elliot has so far only been on screen as a cameo apart from his few lines in the third episode. We just know him as "Milly's crush". If he was even given a little more screen time other than "hey wanna come to the garden" that would be better.
As of now, Lia. Hailey's repeated lines of "drop the mean girl act" and the hints at her possibly being a former friend of Lia push her in this territory. Why does she act like a mean girl? Why do she and Hailey hate each other?
Stacy has only ever been on screen in the fifth episode and is used as a tool to get Luke and Zander together. We don't see her reaction to Luke rejecting her for Zander. After her kissing Luke we never see her on screen again. This is the DEFINITION of a badly written character.
Hell, pretty much the whole cast except Hailey as we don't have any records of their lives at home. No parents, no siblings, no nothing. This is almost essential to writing a show.
The next thing I'll talk about is ships. For the adults, "ship" is internet slang for a couple whether made-up or real.
Starting with Lander. If I'm being honest, it was rushed and was just made to fulfill the need for a Luke arc. Two episodes for a couple to get together? That's nowhere near enough time. Even if it was just five episodes it'd be enough. I can see a lot of ships not sailing by the end of the 9-episode Season 1, so why on earth did Lander have to progress so quickly? And besides, it wasn't even half-baked, it was straight-up raw considering how much potential for Luke, Stacy, and Zander COMBINED was thrown in the ocean. They could have been so much more than what they are now.
Saisy is what the show appears to be leaning towards. I don't think this is a good idea given that NOT EVERY FRIENDSHIP HAS TO TURN ROMANTIC. The two are 10,000% better platonic than they are romantic. Besides, they've probably known each other for maybe a month at the absolute most.
Milliot. You can read that word as fast as you can and you will still take more time than how much screen time the pair has gotten.
Jailey...oh god. The two aren't very close, considering Jake has bullied Hailey for, uh, however long, and that Jake only randomly decided just now to be nicer. Her much-more-mild-than-now distrust in him is rational. And as I said again not every relationship needs to turn romantic. If they became proper friends, good thing and probably even a miracle.
Now obviously I don't fully hate this...I gave it a 5/10 instead of a 1/10 after all. Here are some redeeming qualities.
This, especially by Gacha standards, is INCREDIBLY well-made. The animation is actually quite smooth, and while it isn't Pixar level quality, why would you expect that from a web animation?
The protagonist, Jake, is VERY well-written, contrary to 90% of the cast. He genuinely does seem realistic in terms of his backstory, and his hesitance to break ties with his "friends" is completely rational. Anyone who shames him for not telling his friends off for bullying or telling them the truth about his new friends is completely out of their mind, as I know how hard it isn't to stand up to your own friends. In the words of King Andrias from Amphibia: "That's the thing about friends, isn't it? The more you love them, the more it hurts when they go."
Lander, despite its raw arc, is actually kind of cute.
The voice acting, also by Gacha standards, is great.
And finally, there are tons of other creations by this same author that are also worth watching and if they had IMDB profiles I would rate them on a higher scale.
Thank you for reading and remember that this was not made to trash RosyClozy. I am simply pointing out the major flaws that she can improve on in the future.
