Ton ombre est la mienne (1963)
Defined true love for me
I saw the USA dubbed version on television as a teenager. And although production values were not really good, the story was. Jill Haworth was wonderful as the long lost sister, who realizes in the end what true love is. Without revealing too much, complications occur when she is found in a Cambodian village by her brother who has been searching for her for years. Her new life conflicts with her old one and she must decide where she really belongs. She gets it right and it struck me in a profound way. So much so, that I essentially did the same thing and I owe my happy marriage to this movie. Thank you, Jill Haworth for opening my eyes to it.
Agent Cody Banks (2003)
Right idea... Wrong Exposition
Agent Cody Banks succeeds on a basic level, but this story could have been told in a much more dynamic way. Casting was fine, but in an effort to put in as much excitement as possible into the movie, they missed an opportunity to make a film that would have a broader appeal and leave an indelible mark. I would have put in a scene with the training program and an emphasis on using the skills he learned only in situations of National Emergency. More scenes with him showing restraint would have improved his character. The scene of saving the runaway car was overdone. I probably would have chosen a montage of Agent Cody Banks doing good deeds... on a smaller scale. The shyness around girls would have better been exposed as a known entity with examples from class, but have him be a know it all in class, yet reserved. Show other young agents fail in other operations, by losing control. Have Cody Banks succeed by showing restraint. That's a much better movie.
