Grindhouse (2007)
See It How It Should Be Seen
8 April 2007
Warning: Spoilers
Saw this on opening night. I saw it as a movie of this type should be seen. AT THE MOTHER F'IN DRIVE IN!

I have awaited this movie since I first heard of it and made damn sure I saw it as soon as possible. It delivered almost all of it's promises as far as action, gore, sex, and good old fashion violence. The in between fake trailers were hilarious and awesome and both features were decent tributes to 70's drive in exploitation flicks. I have a few small things , though, I did not like.

First, graining and aging the film was an ingenious idea that added to the experience, however it was used a little too much, I think. Second and lastly, I was a little angered at how stuntman Mike was dispatched. I know those chicks were bad ass and all but come on!? SNAKE PLISKEN DON'T GO OUT LIKE THAT!!!

In all seriousness, I was looking forward to Terantino's film the most but after all is said and done, I think the best film was Planet Terror. It had virus based zombies that gave you the feel that you were watching Day Of The Dead or even Romero's The Crazies. It had Tom Savini which is always a plus for me. It had loads of hot chicks not to mention one of them ending up with a multi-gun for a leg. Overall, I still think it was a great double feature and I plan to buy it as soon as it hits DVD.

Motorama (1991)
Strange and Bizarre but good
5 April 2007
Warning: Spoilers
I caught this on cable one late night in the early/mid 90's. May have been Cinemax's Vanguard Theatre ( where they would feature cult, B, art house, etc.)but I can't remember.

It starts out with scenes of a kid making something wood and metal in what looks like a basement while his parents are violently arguing upstairs. At first, it's hard to tell if the voices are flashback and the metal and wood creation are some torture device of a deranged psycho or perhaps the kid is going to use the device he's building to kill his arguing parents. As it turns out, he is making leg extensions so that he can run away in this candy apple red 60's era Mustang.

From there it becomes a surreal road movie where the boy stops at various gas stations to play some long forgotten sweepstakes game. You get a certain number of gallons of gas from Chimera Gas Stations you get a game token and peel off the sticker, you collect letters and if you spell out MOTORAMA, you get a visit and tour of the Chimera headquarters.

Along this odyssey, he runs into the freakiest cast of characters to ever inhabit the deserts of the American southwest. He comes across a variety of oddballs at rest stops, diners, gas stations, and roadside attractions. None of which seem to realize, or at least acknowledge, that he's a young pre-teen kid.

One of the scenes I remember as particularly bizarre was a married couple pick him up, act overtly sexual towards him, and I believe, drug him. When he awakes, they apparently have given him a tattoo.

Eventually he makes it to Chimera HQ but it turns out they want to renig because no one was supposed to make it that far. My memory is a little fuzzy on the exact ending.

I have been looking for this movie off and on for ten years and every time I would describe it I would get blank stares as I tried to describe the whacked out plot to people. Apparently it is on DVD now so I can check one more off my wanted list.

I urge anyone who is a fan of offbeat black comedy road movies, to find this and watch it!

Great lost 80's comedy
3 April 2007
Very funny lost gem from my youth. I remember seeing this when it came onto TV. I have seen it twice and then forgot all about it for years. Thought about it yesterday and set upon the task of figuring out it's title. Hooray , I found it! I highly recommend this if you come across it in one of it's three titles. Milly's best friend's reaction to her newly grown penis is hilarious.Good family comedy despite somewhat "blue" moments. Yes, the premise is a little far fetched but come on, it's a comedy aimed at young adults. Would buy in a heartbeat when it get's on DVD (hint hint). Seriously, why isn't this on DVD yet? I see on here far less worthy films made by the director and producers re-released.

Great to throw on at a party!
19 March 2007
I Bought this because of the absolute love for the genres themselves and the way in which they were marketed. My wife can't believe I bought a DVD of just trailers.

What you get is about two hours of a cross section of the blood horror, sexploitation, blacksploitation, mondo, roadshow, and Euro sleaze trailers that used to run before and between grindhouse double features in the 70's. It may be little boring to most to own(I personally loved it the first time around, but only re-watch it when I show it to others)but it is definitely worth watching at least once.

If you are a fan of the genre, I recommend checking out this, it's volume 2, anything with a Something Weird Video imprint, and the book Sleazoid Express by Bill Landis and Michelle Clifford.

Absolute best of the biker gang movies!!!
19 March 2007
After the success of Roger Corman's Wild Angels in the mid sixties, there were probably a hundred or so biker movies flung out to the masses. Most with Hell's Angels or some rip off version of The Angels' name. All shared some degree of low budget schlock value. This movie is completely different from the rest!

First, it has a decent and interesting plot and even some back story subtext between the two brothers in the movie. Secondly, it has an original soundtrack that, although slightly dated, isn't that bad. A sort of psychedelic garage band plays at the party at the beginning of the movie. Also the movie seemed to have a decent budget spent in all the right places. Lastly, The actual Oakland Hell's Angels appear in the movie as not only extras but speaking and acting roles and their actually not too bad.

So I highly recommend this to motorcycle movie and crime caper fans. If nothing else, it's got the most real Harley's and choppers you will ever see in a 60's/70's biker flick.
