meh
It's almost as if the writer and director made a challenge to themselves to see how many clichés they could fit in and scenes and plot devices they could carbon copy from braveheart, hero, lord of the rings, the patriot, gladiator, mortal combat and god knows how many other epic movies. It also loses points for including lines like "freedom isn't free" and having too many comparisons to the war on terror (with a pro war message).
The characters show one-dimensionality that is usually reserved for romantic comedies. The good guys are white. the bad guys are brown. Holocaust deniers have a better grip on historic events. It is a shoe in if the Oscars ever add the category "most homoerotic".
stylistically though, it was the bomb-digga.
Barnone (1997)
it looked like it sucked at the store, boy was i wrong.
We were at the video store and it was my girlfriends turn to choose. This is not usually a problem as she has great taste in movies despite a flare for sometimes over obscure art films. 5 minutes into the movie I was already raving about how great it was. It's tagline is "what clerks did for convenience stores..." but kevin smith could never provide such fresh, clever and still believable characters. The movie has tons of great shots and even better lines. at certain times we can empathize with all of the characters. Rather than being slow as docu-dramas tend to be, Barnone moves at a steady pace being consistently funny and above all REAL. I fully recommend this movie to anyone who has ever worked in/drank in or been kicked out of a bar.
