Sugar (2024)
Awful, awful, awful
Not sure where to begin, this series tries to be everything, noir, sci-fi, mystery, and never pulls off any properly. Maybe if they focused on one thing it would have worked. But no, they had to take one of the most wooden actors of his generation and make him an alien detective with a heart of gold🤣 Not sure why the writer and director think throwing in clips of old hollywood films will make it noir but it doesn't. It feels more like an episode of Dream On than it does a noir. This has a star attached and Apple doesn't like to admit mistakes (which sums up their whole tv lineup) so expect a 2nd season. Good news is it can't get worse.
Ruthless (2020)
6 episodes made into 5 seasons
I have to credit Tyler Perry, not everyone can make a gravy train out of poo poo salad. To be able to sit down and take something that could be done in 6 to 8 episodes and turn it into years of content takes some chutzpah. No show in tv history takes longer for 2 people to say hello than this one🤣 Nothing moves at a normal pace as the purpose is to drag it out to make as much content as possible. Instead of calling him the highest I am surprised Perry didn't give him a much longer title to fill up air time. The female actresses are beautiful and some have talent but it is wasted in this never ending sham of a series. I never thought I would say I would rather watch Madea but here I am.
A Man in Full (2024)
30 years too late
This is well done but just dated. Another story from Wolfe based on the 80s greed in America. Such forward thinking stuff. Next they will be making a series about the cold war. Ladd is great as always but most characters are over the top and comedic. This does fit typical Netflix programming, attach stars to a project and then worry about what the story is. Not sure this is supposed to tell us anything other than the writer of the novel writes about the same subject a lot. It is also typical of a white male writing about the black experience in modern America, because who else would know it better than a white man from a southern state?🤣
Sex Education (2019)
Should have ended after 3 seasons
I loved this show, it was funny and well acted by everyone in the cast. It tried to be deep but the advice was always something you could hear on any episode of Dr. Phil. Now season 4 is a different animal. It is obvious the writers think they know gay people but really don't. In this world everyone who is gay is loud, wears super bright clothing and have ear to ear smiles all the time. Oh and they must say something every few minutes to remind you they are gay. The season seems more about convincing everyone gay people are like the rest of us (which they are) but by being nothing like most people who identify as gay. Just tell a story, with characters all of types and don't try so hard. It was awful watching this. You could see signs of this path late is season 3 but this just loses all purpose, other than to tell us gay people wear bright clothing and smile all the time. I sure hope no one who is gay and goth sees this show, they will be crushed.
Poor Things (2023)
Same old from this director
I always feel like this director is the Johnny Depp of directors. Hides himself in weirdness so no one notices he isn't that good at his craft. This movie is like when you go to the art gallery and there is a painting of something a 10 year old could do but it has an expensive price tag so everyone sits around gushing over the garbage, all afraid to be the one who says this sucks.
That is this director. Throw weird on the screen to such a level that people are afraid to say I don't get it or that wasn't very good. So people pretend it is great. This won't make much money, will be forgotten in a year except for the nudity and at the same time the critics will fall over themselves trying to look smart by saying it is great cinema.
À mon seul désir (2022)
Was this really written/directed by women?
Absolutely embarrassing film. It is well shot, great actresses and the dumbest story I could imagine being written in this day and age. I would say what can you expect from misogynistic French cinema except that it was written and directed by women!
These women work as strippers and are portrayed as appearing in front of a small handful of very polite men who respect women because of course that is just how strip clubs work🤣. It even has the audacity to have a couple of them be hookers with again no issues or repercussions. In fact they sell it as a great way to make money and buy an apartment! Can't wait for the sequel where it shows human trafficking of underage girls as simply misunderstood daycare.
A truly appalling effort that makes you think it was created entirely by men who are using female pseudonyms. The entire nation of Franc should be embarrassed about the portrayal of this line of work. Women still have a long way to go before they are thought of as more than props in movies.
El silencio (2023)
Ok, that made next to no sense
Hard to imagine a more convoluted story and stupid ending. Typical of spanish tv, a frankenstein mix of mexican telenova and mystery. Show looks great, acting is good, but the story seems to be put together on the fly and nothing seems to ever get explained completely. And while the title is a translation there is no muting in this! Lol, within a few minutes of the series he is already talking to his priest. Would love to see something like this be written by someone who knows how to tell a story and understands continuity and common sense. Until then more confusing drivel that looks great but tastes awful.
Todas las veces que nos enamoramos (2023)
retread garbage all over again
Love the actress in this, but even she can't save this show. No chemistry between leads, instead of real dialogue and acting they keep things fast paced to hide the lack of depth in the script. The director obviously is an Almadovar fan as they stole his style completely of fast pace, faster talking and over the top characters. If they slowed this down, actually built up some evidence that these two had some chemistry they might have something here. But they didn't and they don't. This should be a heartfelt show featuring a fantastic young actress. Sadly it isn't. Go watch an almadovar fllm instead of this.
Gen V (2023)
Deja vu all over again
Good cast, raunchy humour, super heroes, liberal use of the C word, why this show has everything that "the Boys" has. Why? Because it is an exact copy of it. Same person behind both and wanted to milk it for all it is worth so he creates a duplicate, but with teens! Great thing is a show like this doesn't even have to shut down during a writer's strike as he had the scripts from the boys to copy and tweak.
By duplicating the boys he is going to saturate the air with this concept and hasten the audience tiring of it and thereby speeding up the end of the boys, Great job, but hey you will make money off it, making the creator of th shows no different than the corporate heroes of the seven.
The Walking Dead: Daryl Dixon (2023)
Jumping way over that shark
I loved Walking Dead and have watched all the spinoffs but this is the tipping point. Daryl floats his way to France to escort the next messiah who is being raised by nuns? Really? Were the aliens from uranus unavailable? Nothing says out of storylines better than stories like this. Not knocking the execution of the series, they always hit the nail on the head there but not one of these spinoffs have done anything to further the future of humanity, they are just doing the same thing no matter where they go with no moving forward. This is why the spinoffs should never have happened, there is nothing in the comics to guide the story and the writers and AMC have long ago shown they don't have a clue as to what comes next.
The Diplomat (2023)
Never let the wrier's strike end
Because ifyou do they will make more episodes of this garbage. 20 years into her career and the writer is still copying the West Wing but with even more implausible scenarios. No ambassador is involved in the things that this one is, lol. It makes no sense and rather than put her in a role that would explain her job they make her an ambassador poised to become VP? Non-sensical is being kind. So is calling it a drama when it clearly is laughable. Veep had more seriousness. Add to the fact that this professional hard as nails woman supposedly has great attraction the to the foreign minister she has spent less than an hour of time with and you have a woman shown once again as a bit out of control with no separation of professional and personal lives. And this was written by a woman! All the me too movement did was put women in charge of shows making women look weak and neurotic. Great job Hollywood, please don't end the strike.
Foundation (2021)
What are people liking this for?
I always want to like sci-fi but this is utter dreck. The main character bounces between people, Hari dies more than Kenny from South Park and it is just bad writing. The writers are lazy, rather than write something that advances the story it feels like every time they don't know what to do they throw it to a character who just seems to be unimportantly floating around space in a cryo tube. And you know each week the writers sit around and someone yells out let's bring Hari back to life! It is a sensical as a telenova. Apple only renewed it because they either had to contractually or they were trying to save face. Either way Steve Jobs is rolling over in his grave.
Mrs. Fletcher (2019)
Good acting, bad writing
Kathryn Hahn is great as always and this show is well acted but the writing is lacking. Such a cliche to see a divorced woman do all the tired cliches...younger man, drugs, 3some, have seen this again and again. But where it really fails is having her character be such a great person and her son be a budding sociopath. He has no respect for his mother, himself, women, those with autism, etc. He is just this total toxic idiot that we are to believe resulted from being raised by such a good person. Not sure that made much sense. Glad it isn't coming back for another season as I hate to see how bad her some could go. Season 2 likely has him selling crack on a corner somewhere.
Luther (2010)
A serial killer on every corner
Good acting but not well written. England is famous for producing show after show focused on a DSI with demons, etc. This makes version 512. But they wanted to make this one different, but how to do that? I know, make London a city full of non stop serial killers and kill more people per episode than I do flies at the cottage. Wife dies? Heck I will be fine in 5 minutes and lets get back to me breaking as many laws as possible with no one batting an eye.
You can have a show that is well acted and still be a joke in terms of writing or character development and this show proves it again and again.
Station Eleven (2021)
Just meh
Not sure why this has such good ratings. It wasn't horrible but what about it that stands out with people I don't know. Just seems to be another example of lets not explain things, lets just go with it and hope audience buys it. Can someone explain why the Prophet steals kids and no one does anything to stop it, they just let this loser raise them by reading a graphic novel to them? I despise stories where they think they are cool by leaving things unanswered and to me this story had to many of those. It is typical of Canadian films as well, guess the days of good writing left with the apocalypse.
Dziewczyna i kosmonauta (2023)
Promising start
In the beginning it had promise but got progressively sillier. The whole Russian corporation thing had a Boris and Natasha vibe and was too funny to take seriously. And am I the only one who got the two male leads confused? The older version of one was similar in appearance to the one who went into space, not the younger version of his own character. Perhaps it is because the character that went into space really is an unsympathetic character.
I really enjoy the shows that come out of Poland, well acted with great visuals. This one spent a lot of time trying to create a world of the future but really had little sci-fi in it other than his not aging. Not the worst show but nothing to recommend either.
The Ark (2023)
Truly stupid
The science, the demeanor of the crew, the acting, it is all awful. I get how shows like this get greenlighted but how does anyone see the early cuts of this and not shut down production? They picked a bunch of unknown actors to try and save money obviously and maybe even using the Chat AI program people are talking about because I can't believe a human wrote this. I love sci-fi and this show made me sad, angry and sick to my stomach. Who designs a ship that puts people is stasis and has those areas on exterior walls of the ship where they would be most exposed? Who has absolutely no crew awake to man the ship? It is only a 5 or so year trip! If they air all of the completed episodes of this show Scyfy should lose their broadcasting license. Aren't these the guys who cancelled the expanse? So they could produce this garbage? Now even Amazon would air this and they will air anything.
Devil in Ohio (2022)
Ugh
I wanted to like this, premise isn't bad and I like the lead actress well enough. But this is really bad. From the stereotypes (gay community should protest over the gay best friend portrayal) to the overuse of tension filled music that never led to any tense moments! This was also the slowest moving series ever, it could have been done in 3 episodes. I get that netflix is all about creating content but they need to do more quality control as it too often seems they will air anything. Yes I am looking at you Ghost Wars. Not sure where the devil is, could be Cleveland, but I think we found where bad writing went.
Copenhagen Cowboy (2022)
Not sure what to say
Looked great, sounded great, had a cool vibe, but really more like an empty ad than a tv show. Seems to be a common result when you are a hip director filming a fever dream rather than a show with a plot and fleshed out characters. I can't say I hate it because it is a very well filmed 6 part advertisement. But it is hard to connect and cheer for a character who says maybe 3 words an episode and has next to no facial expression. This director has definitely been influenced by music videos and has made a really cool show. Just not sure it is something to keep viewers tuning in for long. Interested to see if. It is renewed.
Should also note that I can't recall many shows that made all minorities and immigrants so horrible!
Doc Martin (2004)
Typical British fare
Awful, typical British tv. Everything from England portrays the common people as stupid, low class without social graces and then they spend the entire show laughing at them. Whether the acting is good or not you have to be ok with laughing at people being portrayed as classless and uneducated. Those things are only for the elite of society, like a doctor! Class warfare at its finest.
While everyone on this show has some sort of problem the only people who are written intelligently are the people not from the town. If after the episode where the guy has a hairball from eating his own hair you can still watch this freck, congrats. You too are fine with the not so subtle class warfare this shows spews.
Westworld (2016)
Almost but not quite
I want to like this show. Good cast (Thandie Newton is fantastic as always), great looking, but it took 3 seasons to end up in pretty much the same world view/big brother position as person of interest, another Nolan show. I don't blame HBO for canning it as they likely realized the same thing. Silly plot and too many things never scientifically explained because who would want sense to get in the way of a storyline? Saw one review that called it incoherent and couldn't agree more. Could have been much more with some good writing and a well developed storyboard. Perhaps a title change to Wasteworld would be appropriate?
Now that I have watched the 4th season I can confidently say I hate this show. The constant killing of people and having them come back because they aren't human is tiresome. Heck, even after Dolores was supposed to be dead permanently in season 3 there she is again next season! Then add the just as silly plot device of time jumping and you have a show that is extremely lazy in its writing. Just keep using the same thing is not a well written story. Chris Nolan might disown his brother over this garbage.
The Handmaid's Tale (2017)
Worse as it goes along
This isn't bad, just a little too repetitive in a story that seems to have much more potential to comment on the world today. What really bothers me is the protesting portrayed against the Americans in Canada. Canadians would not protest against white people😂 And they sure as hell wouldn't interrupt a memorial service for fallen soldiers. I get it, it is a fictional story, but it is insulting to Canadians from people enjoying our hospitality to produce the damn show in the first place.
This would have been much better as a limited series so the writers wouldn't have to revisit the same storylines for 5 years.
The Boys (2019)
Mocking or advocating?
This show is really well done but I think it is the most misogynistic show ever in TV history. It presents itself as showing the horribleness of these characters but when Homelander is talking about how the fans are loving the real him it is a true commentary on society and just the same as what happened with Trump. So each week this show is furthering the love for bad people like Trump, etc. This show is popularizing fascism, not trashing it. I suspect the people behind the show know it too.
¿Quién Mató a Sara? (2021)
Train wreck 3rd season
I liked this show but the 3rd season is such a silly premise that I think the writers had Covid when they wrote it. All novellas are silly in their plot twists but this one seems like it was written just before they filmed it. A drug to cure schizophrenia and homosexuality? Really? Why not near sightedness at same time? With how well these are filmed, decent acting and beautiful women it would be nice if they could improve the writing.
Line of Duty (2019)
Soooooooo Bad
What a god awful film. Stupid plot, laughable fights scenes (the lead looks like a loser as a result of them) and somehow on numerous occasions he is able to run faster than bullets from an automatic weapon. If there was a license needed for directors and writers they would revoke them for this movie. Excuse me while I go throw up a little.
