SpongeBob SquarePants (1999)
Old is very good, new is Russian Roulette
There are more than enough good episodes of Spongebob that I feel comfortable giving a prestigious 9/10, as it is a comedy series that likely won't grow stale even with age (quite a rarity, trust me). Certain later seasons did get sloppier and soiled the name with infamous episodes, which is why I cannot in good conscience give this a perfect 10.
However, for the most part this classic franchise holds up well even now.
Spider-Man: No Way Home (2021)
Great, but a tad overrated
It certainly gave the fans what they wanted, but I found some of the plot elements a bit contrived. Conveniently bringing other spidermen from other universes to fight their villains was certainly fun, but it threw away a lot of my suspension of disbelief in the realism, even moreso than Infinity War and Endgame. This made it harder to consider the stakes as serious.
I suppose that is forgivable for the amount of fanservice and ties back to the roots that added in an original twist, however. I still feel that an 8/10 fits this best and the 9/10 most seem to prefer is slightly above where it should be.
Poketto monsutâ (1997)
Painfully Generic
If you've seen one episode, you've seen them all. Nothing changes in the course of 30 years. This show is rated highly due to nostalgia and the pokemon games, that's it. If you are a child, it is entertaining. Not quite sure how people can get through 1000 episodes without getting bored.
Star vs. the Forces of Evil (2012)
Ruined by Shipping and Filler
At one point, this had the chance to be a good show. With certain great characters like Toffee and Eclipsa driving the plot and amazing episodes like Into the Wand and Moon the Undaunted, I really had high hopes.
Unfortunately, the small proportion of amazing episodes in seasons 1-3 are drowned out by the large amounts of filler (which could be excused as "worldbuilding" occasionally but most of them added nothing to the show, seriously why were Pizza Thing and Trial by Squire even animated?). The shipping drama also takes a large amount of air time and isn't worth sitting through unless you are that into teen drama, and even if you are it will get old fast.
But by far the worst part of all was season 4, which not only still had terrible filler episodes, but rushed multiple breakups to make Starco occur suddenly for the sake of a conclusion. Not to mention continuity was destroyed halfway through the season and earlier foreshadowed plot points were dropped entirely (remember Eclipsa corrupting Glossaryck or her supposed evil power that was foreshadowed and built up for over a season? Apparently all that was just a red herring and she did nothing wrong). Don't even get me started on the atrocious finale.
Overall, there are some genuinely excellent parts of the show, namely the few episodes in Toffee's arc and some of Eclipsa's appearances and buildup. However, I highly, highly suggest against watching the entire show because the aforementioned problems outweigh these beacons of light in the darkness. If you must watch, I suggest either stopping at the end of Battle for Mewni if you are casual or the end of Season 3 if you are really obsessed, but don't touch S4.
It's sad it has come to this, it could have been the next Gravity Falls if they made every episode like their most story oriented ones.
Hunter x Hunter (2011)
Good set up and worldbuilding, Weird Pacing
The main cast is very interesting. Most arcs are interesting. However, the show leaves way too many unanswered questions and sometimes drops plot points entirely for a long time.
Also, the chimera ant arc would have been great, if it was not dragged out so long. The end of it, while satisfying, felt like a waste of time because it took nearly 30 hours to watch. Some of the conflicts during that arc especially were very dragged out. If they sped up the pace of that arc by halving it and fleshed out more plot points the show ignored, it would have been 10/10.
Mirai nikki (2011)
Way too fast paced
Not bad per say, and there are some thrilling moments, but the story goes at a million miles per minute. Without getting too much in to detail, it seriously feels like whoever created this sacrificed all semblance of continuity and stable plot for cheap thrills, with "plot twists" occurring literally about every episode.
You think you know the characters and understand the plot? Prepare to have that yanked away from you within 20 minutes or less.
And there are deaths, so I won't get specific, but this show really sacrifices a lot and makes some stupid and nonsensical choices for the sake of the thrill, so much that a few episodes left a sour taste in my mouth after uprooting entire plot points/characters out of nowhere with absolutely no build up.
This is a major problem throughout the entire series, though the middle and end amplify these issues to an absurd degree.
Sure, there are some anime that are too slow paced and boring which need more dire consequences that actually impact characters due to low stakes, but this show goes way too far to the other end of that and makes it impossible to keep up with the constant stream of chaos.
If you want to be shocked by constant and sometimes contradictory nonsensical twists and a bunch of brutal death, this is the show for you. If you want a coherent plot with stable character development over time and well executed twists that aren't just created for shock value, you will likely be disappointed.
