Danger 5 (2011)
The BEST, seriously, not hyperbole
If you aren't watching this series you have to ask yourself, why do I even have eyes? Because if you aren't using them to watch this then you are doing it wrong. Natzis(sp), dinosaurs, babes, guns, puppets, international intrigue, it has it all.
In all seriousness it is a loving send-up of a dozen different genre's and eras that on paper looks like it would be a disaster but by some miracle it is amazing. The cast is totally committed to the insane plot while never winking at the camera. The writing is totally beside the point since the story is only exists to serve the various set pieces. Worth watching alone because it isn't anything like what you've seen before.
Training Day (2001)
Did John Wu direct this?
...or was it his twin brother Antoine Fuqua? I get into a film with the expectation that I need to suspend disbelief but you also need to be reasonable. Cops (even crooked ones) do not shoot with both hands cocked sideways but if that was the only flaw I wouldn't be asking for 2 hours of my life back. It is sad that despite a big budget and big names, they can't top the lower budget TV series The Shield, which takes this story and does it right. Hollywood, take note, you may need to fear television yet. And the Academy, I thought actors in stupid films were exempt from nomination? Clearly I am wrong. Rating: *
Children of Dune (2003)
So much better than the first
I would like to start by saying thank god they spent more than $50 on the sets this time, and the costumes don't look like 17th century court buffoons. I was pleased to see that Alec Newman learned to act in the few years between films. Again, they remained true to the Dune novels with few deviations. Sadly, the music was a bit uninspired as was much of the acting. The actors just didn't seem to get the majesty of their roles. And am I the only person that thought Susan Sarandon was possibly the worst casting decision ever? I would have thought she would outperform everyone (I was clearly mistaken). All in all, great production value and a strong recommendation despite its shortcomings.
