Beyto (2020)
Everything not in sync except for the Turkish get together
For me the only good part was the exploration of the Turkish culture filmed during the wedding ceremony.
Good part about portrayal of Beyto is that he did his best to avoid his very unpromising wedding plan secretly organized by his homophobic and intolerant parents and he made this clear to his wife in the very first moment he got an opportunity to discuss about it openly. Yes, rightly said by some other fellow reviewers that there are certain instances when his behavior can also be judged as being quite selfish.
The main turn off in this film is the complete lack of chemistry between the two male couple Beyto and Mike. Not for a single moment Mike's character portrayed any sort of love and feelings for his boyfriend who has a very different background and stuck in some really difficult family circumstances. He is so rude, un-adjusting, and unwilling to understand and resolve issues that disrupts the very idea that there were once something in between them and that they really had a plan for an ongoing and meaningful relationship.
The Man with the Answers (2021)
An experience of a road trip worth watching
Its a story of a wonderful discovery of gradual emotional dependence between two apparently different personalities without strong labels on their sexuality, unfolding in a beautiful scenic road trip from Greece to Italy. Two lead characters are very much fitting to the storyline with great performances. The story evolves mainly around a young Greek guy (Victoras), a former diving champion who is slightly lost in his life after loosing his granny and being alone in his life without a job and therefore is slightly disconnected and not very open to experience life. The other lead character (Mathias), a German extrovert free spirited guy believes in living in the moment and takes life as an experience, always cheerful. They both meet in a ship from Greece to Italy and then their journey continues in a road trip. During this amazing journey Mathias constantly tries to liven up Victoras through his questions, cheerful attitude and engagements and also sometimes with his frivolous actions. They develop their bonding through a mix of rough and sweet adventures in this journey in a very natural and believable way.
The film ends in a very open ended way leaving the audience to wonder whether the relationship would converge in a more meaningful way or it is just an experience. I think most of the audience who liked this movie would definitely want a part 2, including me very much.
I thank to the director to bring up the concept of experiencing life with free minded emotions and desires. Of course the lead characters portrayed here can be assumed as gay, but the film advances in a different way and the message is that love and emotions are more free spirited in nature, and it has many forms and not that always has to converge in a very specific way we can think of.
My only disappointment from the movie is that its too short for a such a lovely portrayal of budding relationship, may be that's why it is craving for more and therefore interesting.
