Anne no nikki (1995)
Anne received a new diary from her father as a birthday present...
Imagine you are hiding in a house, and the Nazi forces are walking along the road right next to you. Or you're hiding on the top floor, and the Nazis are searching for you just below.
We all know about the Holocaust and the fate of German Jews during WW2. There is nothing new to say about this.
Like all other Jewish families, Anne Frank's family fell victim to Hitler's cruelty. While Anne's father is concerned about the safety of his family and other Jewish families, Hitler, who is exactly the same age as Anne's father, is intoxicated with the game of orphaning innocent children.
Those kids who are still scared of lightning. Those kids who still sleep with their parents hugged. Those kids who haven't learned to cook yet. Those kids who haven't learned to shave yet. Those kids who haven't learned to keep an eye on their loved ones yet. Those kids who haven't fully discovered their life yet. Those children, like flowers, could live such a beautiful life.
Anne is one of them. She spent her teenage years in a Secret Annex of 450 square feet. But at that time, she was supposed to swim in the sea or fly a colorful kite from the peak of the mountain.
It was July 1942 when they went into hiding. They met another Jewish family there. Anne was barely 13 years old, and her elder sister Margot Frank was just 16. Last month, Anne received a new diary from her father as a birthday present. Diary writing has been a hobby since her childhood, but did anyone realize then that this time the red-checked diary would become a part of history...
What wasn't in it? People with different ages and thoughts. Laughter, tears, marital strife, fear, conflict of personality in their daily life... Dreams, and of course, falling in love.
None of them were supposed to be there, but the situation had brought them together. A cake was heavenly food for them, and merely some undergarments were the best birthday present!
Anne described all these incidents in her diary. She was always worried about her friends. Maybe that's why she wrote diaries for her imaginary friends (e.g., Jettje, Emmy). But the one she wrote about most often is Kitty. It could be her friend Kitty Egyedi (but I think it's her pet cat, Moortje).
People simply love to dream, to embrace dreams. And with these dreams, they survived in that small cottage for 2 years, 4 weeks, and 1 day. Anne wrote this long story to her Kitty, and our movie is all about this.
"Thanks to Madhouse for bringing this film to us. There is nothing more to say about the animation quality, as I admire Madhouse the most after Studio Ghibli. I truly loved how they captured every single detail exactly as they were.
It was a heart-melting journey for me. I could imagine myself in Anne's place, and Anne did a great job fulfilling her dream.
Off Topic: Throughout the entire film, we can see the world through Anne's perspective. Anne mentioned in her diary about Margot's Diary. As far as I know, Margot's diary was never found. According to her friends Barbara, Hilde, and Jetteke, Margot was a beautiful, charming, and intelligent young lady. Jetteke also mentioned that Margot was more precious to her. In my opinion, since Margot is older than Anne, naturally she was more mature. It would have been even more amazing if we could have known her point of view in that situation."
There is also a Hollywood film called "The Diary of Anne Frank" (1959). I loved Anne's attitude in "Anne no Nikki" (1995) and the cuteness of Anne (played by Millie Perkins) in "The Diary of Anne Frank" (1959). Both directors, Akinori Nagaoka and George Stevens, represented Anne in their own unique ways, and I loved both of their interpretations.
The Croods (2013)
ha! we call those "children"
Have you ever heard the story of a circus elephant? It was tethered to a chain in a circus tent and perished in a tragic fire accident. Despite having the ability to break free, it couldn't... Why? Because it considered the tent its world and the chain its fate.
Grug Crood, a caveman, is somewhat similar. He views anything 'New' as BAD, 'Different' as BAD, and 'Curiosity' as BAD. He is an overly protective individual.
Now, let's delve into the Crood family:
Grug's wife, Ugga, possesses an open-minded perspective.
Eep, a curious teenage girl.
Thunk, a character with significantly lower intelligence.
Gran, Grug's mother-in-law, maintains a laid-back attitude.
Anything else? Well, there's 'Guy' from an unknown family who is far more advanced than them. For instance, he has a pet named Belt.
Guy is a complete contrast to Grug. He shares stories of a place with multiple suns in the sky, a land of 'Tomorrow.' He inspires them to explore this new world.
And now, they don't want to survive but to LIVE......
except Grug.
"It's a well-directed movie. The entire cast did exceptionally well, with Nicolas Cage delivering an impressive performance. The story was carefully crafted, and the dialogues were captivating. It's a delightful journey into the Stone Age.
Dreamworks once again showcases their expertise. It's a hilarious, engaging, and thoroughly enjoyable experience. If you're feeling bored and craving a quick snack to relax, then go for it. Trust me... it's even more enjoyable than words can express!"
Oh, I almost forgot to mention Sandy, the youngest member of the Croods. Let's hear about her from her grandmother...
Gran: What's a "pet"?
Guy: It's an animal you don't eat.
Gran: Ha! We call those "children".
Kubo and the Two Strings (2016)
the Shamisen has three(3) strings... then why is the movie titled 'Kubo and the Two Strings'?
Hanzo, a Samurai Warrior. We don't know what happened to him.
Sariatu, Hanzo's wife, cannot recall her past properly due to an unstable mental condition.
Kubo, the one and only son of Hanzo and Sariatu (at first I thought it was a Girl).
Kubo lives with his ailing mother in a mountain cave near a village. Essentially, he is a storyteller, sharing tales learned from his mother. He earns his living by enchanting the village folk with magical shamisen melodies and intricate origami creations.
But wait! Are there any complications in store for him?
Yes, indeed. It is forbidden for him to stay out after dark, as his aunts, Karasu and Washi, will seek him out to take his remaining eye (since his grandfather already took one).
What?! What's happening here?
Hold on, I haven't finished yet. Then, the story takes an abrupt turn. One day, Kubo was running late, and as expected, Karasu and Washi quickly found him and attacked. However, his mother suddenly appeared and sent him far away.
Her final words to Kubo were, "Kubo, you must find the armor. It's your only chance. Remember this."
And in the upcoming scenes, you will discover a monkey (the instructor), a Beetle (who has forgotten his past), and more origami. They will assist him in finding his father's armor and facing the obstacles that lie ahead.
Will they manage to survive at all?
"Just another Laika-produced movie.
First of all, I'm not a fan of stop-motion animated films but love action with fantasy. The storyline is not very unique. I was disappointed with some jokes and dialogues of the characters (those were so common), and the twist was predictable.
The sound quality was good. The studio was designed brilliantly as always. There is fun, sorrow, adventure, and good things to learn. A good movie for kids. A movie to watch with everyone in the family."
Did you know, the Shamisen has three(3) strings... then why is the movie titled 'Kubo and the Two Strings'? Wanna know why? Go and watch the movie. Simple!
Hoshi o Ou Kodomo (2011)
after brainwashing Asuna, he immediately commits sui*cide
It's too difficult... it's too difficult to review this movie. I'm not sure what I should say and what I shouldn't.
Our main character is Asuna, a young elementary school girl. She lost her father at an early age, and her mother works long shifts at a hospital. So, she grew up... kind of on her own??
She created secret places to spend her leisure time. Her hobby is listening to mysterious music coming from a cat's-whisker receiver.
One day, she suddenly gets attacked by a weird creature and is saved by a strange boy. The boy, Shun, is truly peculiar because after washing Asuna's brain, he immediately commits suicide.
On the other hand, substitute teacher Mr. Morisaki captures Asuna's attention by delivering a lecture about Agartha, the land of the dead.
In Agartha, there exists a Gate of Life and Death that can bring people's souls back from the dead.
Now, Asuna is desperate (in my opinion) to meet Shun again, and on the other hand, Morisaki wants his wife back at any cost.
Agartha is a completely different universe. Regular people from the human world can't enter there. But somehow, they (Asuna, Morisaki, and Spoiler!) were able to get in.
Yes... you've got it, the main part of the adventure has just begun!
"I don't dare to judge Makoto's work. The storyline is super unique, it's literally beyond my imagination. The soundtracks are perfect and the artworks are mind-blowing as always.
Honestly, I feel bored at some point in the movie (maybe I didn't understand some parts of it. I should watch it again closely). I think some scenes were directly inspired by 'Princess Mononoke'; very few though. But at the end of the day, I enjoyed it."
Not a must-watch movie, but it's Makoto Shinkai you know... You will surely miss something special if you avoid it.
Pinocchio (1940)
good old days
Oh... the good old days, when everything was so simple and so pretty.
The story is about a puppet named Pinocchio, made by an old wood-carver named Geppetto. He has no family.
After finishing carving Pinocchio, he wished he had a son like it.
Guess what! A blue fairy makes his wish come true.
Although the puppet has been given life, he is not yet a full human... So, what's the condition?
He has to prove himself as brave, truthful, and unselfish. Okay, DEAL!
Then, the very next day, Geppetto discovered that Pinocchio has come alive. Now he has a boy and lets him go to school (typical parents!). I mean, why, old man, why? He's not a real human boy yet!
And here's where the adventure begins. In this human world, being truthful and altruistic is beyond anyone's dream!
So, what do you think? Can he prove himself as brave, truthful, and selfless? Will he turn into a real boy?
"It was so much fun. Even in the present time, I can feel the excitement of the children in me. Every time my heart melted at the original scores. Hats off to Leigh Harline and Paul J. Smith. This is a true masterpiece!
The film is very lite and thoroughly enjoyable. If you are depressed or worn out for some reason then It's one of the best options."
The key character of the film is Jiminy Cricket. Maybe the fun fact: Jiminy Cricket was not in the original novel The Adventures of Pinocchio (1883) by Carlo Collodi.
Pocahontas II: Journey to a New World (1998)
not recommended
I actually wanted to give it 5 but the reappearance of John Smith gave me a bitter experience. It was a well made character in the first one, but totally ruined it in this one.
Yes it's historically correct than the previous one, but personally I prefer the fictional love story of Pocahontas and Smith than this one.
