The Grand Budapest Hotel (2014)
A Masterpiece!
I mean the movie does not need my mere compliment given its renowned reputation... but I simply have to say it really is a masterpiece.
It was my second time watching the movie - the first time was two and a half years ago and I did not really get it, but thankfully, I thoroughly enjoyed it this time.
First of all, it is absolutely aesthetically pleasing. Plus, the pacing is perfect - properly compact but everything that needs to be told is narrated.
The movie also manages to include so many different elements in such a short amount of time: war, discussion of humanity, romance, of course, art, relationship among love, loneliness and sexuality, and many more. More importantly, each element is also a backdrop to the other, prompting the audience to ponder on them to a deeper level.
Meanwhile, the movie is also an effortless comedy with bits and pieces of sarcasm which paradoxically tells a sad story.
Close (2022)
Despite some missing elements, overall great film
Overall, I really enjoyed watching the film - the storyline, the cinematography, the acting, etc. However, I feel like there could've been a slightly different way to tell the story.
With the development of the plot, it made me feel like the tragedy of Remi not only happens a little bit too soon but also is a little extreme - the conflicts that lead up to the incident do not seem enough.
However, the story before and after the incident is very well told. To begin with, the implicit way of story telling leaves the audience to define the relationship between Leo and Remi. Plus, the interaction between Leo and Remi's mother is also evocative - each time Leo acts differently when he interacts with Remi's mother after Remi's death, with emotions progressing as he digests the event. Dhont well captured the psychology of a teen boy, while he is trying to understand himself as well as the world in the midst of his best friend's passing.

Great overall but there could've been more build-ups
I really enjoyed watching the story overall!
However, I think it would create more conflicts & push the ending to a higher point if there was more build-ups at the beginning of the movie - more details of the chemistry between the main characters & why they are "soulmates", more indications of the accumulated tension between Hae-jun and his wife, more stories from Seo-rae's past to tell how she became who she is today, etc.
Another thing that I felt was sometimes the switch from one scene to another was a little abrupt, which, combined with what I said previously, made me feel like different elements in the movie are a little bit scattered.
Joan Didion: The Center Will Not Hold (2017)
Can't wait to read Joan Didion's books after watching this..
I first heard of Joan Didion several days ago, on December 23rd 2021, from a YouTube vlog - the YouTuber was buying one of her books. Then, 2 hours later, I saw on social media that she had passed away. I searched her up, and found out that she was born in Sacramento and went to Berkeley. I got intrigued.
Today, while I randomly opened Netflix, this documentary popped up on my feed - I immediately considered it as a sign for me to get to know her, so I followed it. Now, after watching this documentary, I can't wait to open one of her books.
