Reality
24 June 2023
I was attracted to this movie because of the advertised amount of explicit sex. I like sex. However the character development quickly took over. There is enormous reality to the portrait of Brandon and the way his addiction/obsession slowly creeps into his life and begins to spin out of control. In truth, this is a film about anger, anxiety, depression, denial, narcissism, isolation, family bonds, despair, sorrow, aimlessness, ... The film shows it like it is. Whoever wrote the screenplay knew an awful lot about sexual addiction. How do I know? It's really not important, in the moment, how he got there or whether Sissy has any involvement. In the current populist wisdom, he will always be an addict. It's just a matter of time before he resumes the downward spiral.

You Would Think
11 March 2023
You would think, as an enterpreneur who had created/developed this product, as you saw that it was contributing to 100s of thousands of deaths throughout the world, you would attempt to do something, anything, to reign in the misuse and misapplication of the product. Maybe you would put some money into combatting the misuse and consequences of misuse, of your product. But no, the family put money, lots of it, into entertainment for the wealthy, the educated, the priviliged few who attend the Louvre, the Met, the Guggenheim, etc. After all, they believed "no one is forcing them to misuse our product". The film is powerful. It shows the power of people who come together to fight evil and apathy, in spite of themselves. I enjoyed the film and I would have joined them on their march for justice.

Too Disney-ish
28 May 2021
I thought the film was too Disney-ish, i.e., the characters were totally wholesome and even the "bad guy" Alec was so likeable you had to love him. This is probably a good movie for children under 12, but in the adult world, things are never this simple.

Say what?

Story made no sense. Illogical. I hope the depictions of the father/son relationship and the cultural norms are puposely bizarre.

Weak Film
15 December 2020
I had high hopes, but the script and the acting were so poor, it was almost painful to watch. Every line was delivered after an awkward hesitation. The facial expressions were right out of "deer in the headlights". Everything was so consistently poor, it had to be the director, pushing 3 normally excellent actors into the twilight zone.

Soft Punches.

Warning: Spoilers
Having grown up Catholic, I can relate to this movie and I did enjoy it. However, I felt the damage done by Catholic indoctrination was treated meekly at the end. The ending I would have written would have been a punch to the gut. I thought nearly all the production aspects were excellent, especially the casting. The casting for Chris, Laura, and Father Murphy was brilliant.

WTF
21 November 2019
I saw this film at the Three Rivers Film Festival in 2019. First one must decide what is the filmmaker trying to do? Is he telling a story? Is he making a statement? Both? Neither? or is this simply a portrait of images hanging as a single work in a gallery. I chose the latter. The film has as its center California highway 110, "the first expressway in LA". The movement on the highway is slow to begin and accelerates as the film progresses. Time passes from early morning to late night. Faster and faster. More and more crowded. There is a Dodge Charger, the "hero" of the film, the antagonist. Are we seeing "progress" or "entropy"? One may feel chaos, disorder, speed, claustrophobia. It is what it is. Just like that painting on the museum wall.

Lots of Testosterone
21 February 2019
A lot of 20-something testosterone fueled drama in this film. I could have done without that. Reminds me of young men driving 60 mph in a school zone and bar fights.

They repeatedly did everything wrong. A bunch of 12-year old boy scouts would've done better.

And why do women always make fawn eyes over the stupidest male in any group?

What I'm saying here is there are a lot of cliches in this script. The screenplay coulda been better. The casting is not great; the cinematography could been better.

Why did I give it 8 stars? Because it was filmed on Kodiak Island and I love real outdoor adventure that doesn't involve animation or superheroes. I also like independent films and

Don't ask too many questions
28 December 2018
Warning: Spoilers
This film makes no sense at all. It is not even remotely believable. Like, how did they determine with no evidence at all, in a mere, 2 minutes, that the malady was caused by looking?; how did the kids get to newborns to 3-4 year olds while everyone was blindfolded? where did the electric service come from? Oh well, I guess if you want to blank out the thought process, it mighta been a decent movie.

Unnecessarily vulgar
16 December 2018
This movie was ok for awhile and then it took a turn into the sewer and stupidity. Don't watch unless you have a high tolerance for dumb.

Pretentious
27 December 2017
Poor boy. Mom has to drive a &60,000 Mercedes-Benz SUV. He lives in a $1 million home. But Mom is too busy to get him a haircut and, as a result, he has a serious discipline problem. Dad is a COOK (gasp, how low can you go?). Do you know how that makes the millions of people who cook for a living feel? This is the kind of crap Hollywood has churned out to insult and humiliate "middle America". No wonder that hate us in Kansas.

Real or Unreal?
4 January 2017
This documentary has a lot going for it. Beautiful cinematography. Morbidly interesting subject matter. Something of a story line. Curious characters. And the Salton Sea itself-I have seen this on maps since I was in the 7th and wondered what kind of people live there. But I couldn't decide if it was simply a documentary filmmaker filming real life as it occurred or if it was a scripted story, forced to tell the story the filmmaker wanted us to see. The dance and soundtrack sequences had to be almost certainly staged. Some of the conversations had to be staged. I rated this film 8 out of 10 anyway, because if it wasn't always real life, I believed I could see real life just behind a very transparent curtain.
