The Summer I Turned Pretty (2022)
A nice breath of fresh air
When the market is oversaturated with the same stuff over and over again, it is nice to relax in a fresh and easy going genre. This was so nice to watch over the summer. Just watch it and feel young. Live vicariously through the characters.
The Black Phone (2021)
Great thriller to come by in a long long time
Short to the point, just watch it, you won't regret it. This movie is proof that you don't need a boat load of budget of special effects to be a great thriller movie. Good plot and great suspense with just enough clues and twists to keep you glued to what's going to actually unravel to a conclusion.
Everything Everywhere All at Once (2022)
If you want to get dizzy watch this
This is one of those pretentious drivel that everyone is keen to gulp down and rate 10/10. The speed of things going on is ridiculous. Then you have scenes where the lights are flashing as if to induce a seizure. Lastly, you have long drawn out scenes in either slow-mo or super slow dialogue. The movie is way too long for its own good and loses its charm by the 30 minute mark.
Dashcam (2021)
First 20 minutes is unbearable
The movie is max 1 hr 19 mins and the first 20 mins is unbearable; consisting of literal human feces, obnoxious and constant singing, not to mention a super unlikable main character. Instead of being horror, the movie tries to make you squirm from needles, etc, and did I mention feces. Waste of time. Don't bother. Super obnoxious movie. I can't imagine how anyone greenlit this to go into production.
Clean (2021)
Super slow
It took 50 minutes for action to start. All throughout the movie, there is an excessive use of slow motion. Coupled with cheesy rap sound effects, this slow burn is not worth it unless you have absolutely nothing to watch and want to indulge in a painfully slow and depressing flick.
Jojakdoen dosi (2017)
Super outrageous plot
Extremely outrageous plot jumping all over the place. Good popcorn flick if you have nothing else to watch. First 20 or so minutes is dizzying as the camera is shaking non-stop. A score of 5 is being generous.
The Assistant (2019)
Literal/realistic portrayal of the job title of 'Assistant'
The story does not go anywhere. Finishing this movie leaves you feeling empty and annoyed that you wasted time. It is more a showing of the suffering of working as an assistant. You are not watching a movie for entertainment.
Samchon (2018)
The pacing and story telling is weird
It is a chore to sit through and watch. The pacing and story telling is weird. You do get rewarded if you manage to get to the last act but in my opinion, it was not that worth it. Good to watch alone on a rainy weekend afternoon with no one around and no other options to watch.
Gyul-baek (2020)
Much more enjoyable than expected
The trailer does not do it justice. It is a must watch if you like rooting for the underdog trying to clawing back up from an impossible scenario. The story has enough twists and turns to keep you intrigued throughout the movie until the last 10 or so minutes, which is a rarity these days.
Dr. Brain (2021)
Pacing is a little slow
Great story but the pacing is a bit too slow for me. If you invest your time in it, it is definitely worth a full watch. The concept is not common and the quality is better than the average Korean series. It does feel like a chore though. You really have to tune in each night or you will lose interest. Great for binging in one go.
Crime Scene: The Times Square Killer (2021)
More about old Times Square and pacing is all over the place
Episode 1 is a long dragged out story about how bad Times Square was in the past with a sprinkle of the actual murder here and there. Not interesting if you are focused more on the crime/killer aspect. Could be great for a drinking game. Shots whenever Times Square was (dot) (dot) (dot) (predators) (prostitution) (etc.). I literally fell asleep nearing the end of episode 1. I continued the next day and it was the same thing.
