The X Files: My Struggle II (2016)
comparison with old episode with the same story
so i wasn't really excited about the 10th season judging by how awful 9th was it was quite obvious that the series was tired enough to not worth watching like pretty much all the series no exceptions at some point going bad
i was stunned however by how bad those episodes were
the last episode in particular reminded me of a very good one episode of the 2nd season called emasculata. the similarities in story are so close that it makes perfect for comparison
so 10th season , the whole production was cheap like u watching an episode of friends everything in focus everything supposedly perfect lined up lighting etc going back to 2nd season all the angles have something unusual weird lenses shots from above or below movement etc lighting again the old series knew how to take a simple setup and turn it into a horror scene with dark lighting that's nowhere to be found in the new series
acting new series have a scaly that is too bored and a molder that makes jokes like a clown nowhere near the old series were Sculley was always dramatic to Oscar levels and molder was funny but not too much almost to James bond type of thing u know small jokes just enough
Cancer man . again new series a bunch of useless talk that make no sense. u get the idea that this guy must be the bad guy but that's it. old series always limited words and to the point example molder "-u withhold information from us we could have prevented all this " Cancer man "-how?"
editing pace .
new series is horrible back and forth from one person to the other with editing that causes u to get tired and too much discussion that turns the series into a Mexican soap opera
old series simple slow shots that rarely change therefore when something happens out of the blue u are indeed surprised very few words. story is unfold mostly by the things that u Don't say than the thing u do. mostly by insinuations
all in all i would say that the new series is basically THE X-FILES for children comedy with a bit of stupid conspiracies
also an other issue about the politics
i don't really know why but the new series has a thing with liberal propaganda the bad companies the good environment the bad wars and a bunch of political stereotypes that not even Hillary would say maybe just sanders
old series could easily create a dramatic situation for instance a bad pharmaceutical company that kills people to pass the FDA tests and has the government to cover her and still not make a party- political statement that takes skill the first thing is the easy and too cliché way
The Legend of Tarzan (2016)
why the hate?
true masterpiece. i have no idea why people hate this. direction is obviously good enough in fact some times its so obviously hardworking that takes over the role of script and plot. that's essentially what direction should be. the ability to tell a story without words. so lets say if the character wants to kill someone or feels this and that he doesn't need to say it because the direction will take care of saying it visuals or editing or zoom or traveling etc. there are movies out there with minimal amount of words and they are still allow u to understand things that are happening it can be something subtle like a movement or a wince or something so yea if u are looking for a woody Allen film where every feeling has to be expressed like a Mexican soap opera don't see Tarzan.
if u are looking for true cinematography however yea this is it usually the first 5 minutes of a movie are enough to see if its gonna be good or not. watch how in this particular it leads to the main character and the title.
second thing is the editing. usually in bad productions that are just a bunch of money piled up for expensive actors and effects the editing is simple. take marvel for example lets say hmm ... ant-man for instance. editing is simple and boring a talks a angle b talks b angle . lots of cuts to up suspense during action and that's it here editing is complicated. some shots are long some times angle is different than the guy talking. why? well maybe we are not interested in what the guy says but the reaction to what he says also for a movie that is all CG action and popcorn there is a lot of slow paced weird shots for specific reasons. also a hard choice for this kind of movie.
stunning visuals. apart from nature and stuff that are above even LOTR levels the camera does wonders. close ups when needed weird angles and difficult lenses . again take a standard mainstream movie of your usual 200mill ant-man/avengers/Thor/whatever.
standard shots 90 degrees everything in focus frame always balanced all in order. cinematography IS NOT evolved whatsoever in the story is like u are going to the theater to see a f$#ng play!!!
in Tarzan however even the most typical simple scene ... i dunno ... some guy meets an other guy and they talk ... o my god weird frames half faces weird angles of the camera ... then the camera is always moving silently to build suspension. just look at the opening scene. and of course in 90% of the shots very little is in focus everything else is blurry. why? well that's the job of the cinematographer to give u what u supposed to be seeing and hide everything else. i mean clear and full shots are good when u see animals attacking the town but why the hell u need them when the two protagonists talk. so if lets say Jane and Tarzan have a dispute we care about the dispute not about the house that they are in. the result is that most shots are blurry houses and England are dark and almost nothing visible like brightness is to 0.that's how u create atmosphere
as far as the protagonists well they are not the perfect actors but who gives a sh$%#*t its Tarzan anyway
Star Trek III: The Search for Spock (1984)
bad
all in all there is no depth in ST. No real story. Here is why.
At some point Enterprize gets destroyed (omg)
Kirk stops being a captain and becomes admiral therefore no more treks (sad face) Spok dies (WFF no) Kirk finds out he has a son (sweet) oh wait a sec at the end of the series a new Enterprise gets build (relax guys false alarm) kirks f$%ks admiral-ship and gets demoted to captain (again ?? WFF) Spok gets resurrected or some similar stuff (aliluia) Kirk's son dies (sweeeeet)
u see my point?
no consequences for peoples actions everything will conveniently conclude at the end with happy result
