The Creator (2023)
Annoying stupid details
I do like a good sci-fi story. The sheer number of cringeworthily stupid details here makes it hard to watch?
A few examples of an extensive list:
So there is this almighty KI developing the ultimate weapon in a secret laboratory. Its security consists of a couple of black-and-white monitors and a couple of human morons watching a sitcom instead while on duty.
The KI thinks that hand grenades with a counter of 10sec are a good idea. Of course they will come back, giving the robots a slapstick moment of comic stumbling into each other head- or limblessly after being blasted.
The escape in a rusty old pickup of undoubtedly american 60ies design souped up with incredible interior technology.
The robots you can sneak up to and deactivate with an off switch conveniently placed on the back of their heads.
Etc. Etc.
House of the Dragon: The Lord of the Tides (2022)
I gave up
That's it. I gave up. A huge fan of Game of Thrones I gave this show it's chances Episode for agonising Episode until this one. After twenty minutes into it i realised that I would not waste any further precious lifetime on watching the same handful of wooden characters milling around in an underlit room either staring at each other or discussing some succession or other while NOTHING IS EVER HAPPENING. Not even the random outbursts of sex or violence that, while mostly unrelated to the story, created at least some moments of mild puzzlement. What a bore. I was so hoping for a spin-off featuring badass Arya, but there's no sign so far,
House of the Dragon: Driftmark (2022)
Agonising family therapy session
The disappointment continues... While Game of Thrones was fast and going places, what we have here is the same handful of characters milling around in some dark hall or the other while ceaselessly regurgitating their family or relationship problems.
Well, at least there were no birthing scenes this time, obviously the writers seem to believe they successfully passed the message that giving birth is not fun time.
I guess now I am more than halfway through I will continue the season to the end, but it is getting harder with each episode...I find myself texting or emptying the dishwasher while watching, just to make some use of my time.
Andor: Kassa (2022)
First thought it might be meant as satirical
There were a couple of minutes in the beginning when I still thought there would come a bit of a laugh. Maybe I'm getting too old, but I thought there were quotes to Mike Hammer, Wall E etc. And then there comes the moment of comic relief. But no. Some 25 minutes in, the scene with overweight and slightly grubby police officer stereotype telling the snappy young police officer stereotype yet another line of alternative facts he is to present (which I thought a running gag, as it was the same between Andor and the guy who assaulted him in the beginning and then Andor and his friend - but it seems it was no gag but meant to be serious), in the absence of any in the slightest interesting character, any storyline (ok: boy looks for girl. Honestly a bit weak) and not to put a too fine point on it: ANYTHING happening, I decided this show to be a waste of time.
House of the Dragon: King of the Narrow Sea (2022)
Studio theatre about a petulant girl
It's really being reduced to the king, the brother and the girl. While the bad guy has indeed an interesting character from the beginning (OK, it is easier for the bad guys), the king has made some development and shows personality by now.
The disappointment comes with Rhaenyra, who just doesn't evolve out of being the petulant little princess constantly sulking over one thing or another.
And...one would think the plot has developed enough to actually let something happen. So far it is a lot of talk about the same few topics (marring off the princess, someone somewhere maybe about to be threat to the realm), and quite random battle or sex scenes just to keep you from turning off.
The Book of Boba Fett (2021)
Slow paced Star Wars nostalgia
Painfully slow storytelling...well, there was not too much of a story to tell in the first place. Two of the episodes were completely unrelated to the rest, one of them mostly consisting of slapstick and the other one of sickly-sweet nostalgia.
Drawn out stilted dialogue, a generous amount of staring.
The action scenes were for the most part agonizing. It seems you can make it into the space age with tactics like: In a firefight huddle together and just let yourself be shot at.
For the longest time i thought the worst thing was the mods cruising on some steventies amusement park leftovers, but then: Enter the gunslinger. The guy got not one, but two (and a half) High Noon scenes, both after said intense staring and content free dialogue, proving to be rather anticlimactic.
